Dinner was good but we got charged for two Evian bottle of water. We did not know nor informed that water was part of the check.
Otherwise the meal was good
The mussels and frites were excellent! Charming decor. Will go back
A lovely and romantic bistro celebrating French food. Good portions, great service, and aptly priced!
Food was outstanding as usual! Great place w/ a great atmosphere. Have always had a good experience here.
We always love Chez Joel, but often forget to go back. Restaurant Week was the perfect reminder and the menu was great.
Was there during Restaurant Week and really enjoyed the visit. The escargot were delicious, although a tad on the small size. The onion soup was very good. Our entrees were salmon and cornish hen. Both were excellent. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse. You feel like you are in a small bistro in France. The service was excellent. Only one thing to beware of...if you don't want to pay extra for the "specialty" waters (Perrier or Evian) be sure to decline when they come over and ask you which you would prefer.
Great food very good service a bit cramped. Valet is good service and great price.
Chez Joel is a quaint neighborhood bistro where we enjoyed a 5 star delicious meal and outstanding service! The restaurant is exceptionally generous in their portions and reasonably priced as well. We enjoyed our complimentary bread basket filled with French baguette slices accompanied by butter and calamata olive tampebade. The tampenade is the only item I did not care for. We started with sparkling rose and Cabernet - both excellent! Next was the soup du jour which was a lovely cream of mushroom soup with just the right texture followed by a superb salad comprised of lettuce, pecans, goat cheese, slivers of apple, accented by radish and tomato In a delectable vinaigrette. Both of our entrees were fantastic, generous and beautifully presented: Steak au poivre with a basket of delicious perfect-sized frites in the most spectacular Au poivre sauce. (I had to ask for more to smother my fries it was so good!). We also enjoyed salmon over asparagus and spinach in a lemon buerre blanc sauce which was fabulous! We completed our meal with yummy chocolate mousse cake with cherries, creme brûlée and coffee. I am a huge foodie and eat out often and I’m very particular about the details. The last time I ate here was about 18 years ago and that was my loss because my return meal was just as fantastic as the first time I remember… I highly recommend this restaurant for both the food and the service! I’ll definiteiy be back again soon! (Oh inexpensive valet too- only $7!)
Thank you for a wonderful evening…
Very good food! You really feel like you've entered a cozy little restaurant in France. Waiter(esses) were very helpful and friendly. Only downsides were that it was pretty noisy and got very hot as it is a small, crowded restaurant. This made it a little difficult to enjoy the food and conversation at times. However, overall a very good spot for a date night out!
We've been to Chez Joel several times, and we love it. We were there this time for Restaurant Week and thoroughly enjoyed it -- what a great value! The food was excellent -- my husband had the steak frites, and I had the salmon. The service and ambience were also lovely.
My wife and I loved it and will definitely come back!
This was my first visit to Chez Joel and was very impressed. The waiter was wonderful, always checking to see if we needed anything. I highly recommend the Onion soup, best in the city. Really good food.
Great experience at Chez Joel. We were greeted by the host when we arrived and immediately taken to our table. Our server was very attentive. The two of us shared three dishes: the beet salad, grilled calamari, and filet mignon entree. The portions were plentiful, delicious, and reasonably priced- it was perfect for two people. We shared a bottle of wonderful white cotes du rhone during dinner. Overall, enjoyed our experience, it was our first time here and we will return!
We loved everything about this restaurant! Wonderful selections, carefully prepared and served with every attention to detail. At the end of our dinner as we were leaving, I smelled the beautiful yellow rose on our table ... and the host gave it to me to take home. A lovely memory from a truly lovely experience!
Great food, ambiance and service - will definitively return and recommend to friends.
Each of us enjoyed our dinner. The fixed price menu is outstanding for value and the selection. We had the Salmon, Scallops, Steak Frite and enjoyed them all. Can't wait to return.
We love this place - excellent delicious quality food all around
Consistently exquisite French bistro. Wonderful wine list, great service.
Chez Joel is consistently wonderful. Authentic French food, reasonable prices, lovely atmosphere.
This is THE best French cuisine and dining experience in Chicago!!!
Chez Joel is always a treat! The food is incredible. The feel/atmosphere is always cozy and wonderful. Perfect for all times of the year. It's more than a neighborhood gem - I would recommend it for anyone visiting Chicago.
This was one more memorable dining experience at Chez Joel. The elegant Christmas decorations complemented beautifully a sumptuous dinner of meticulously prepared fish entrees with a terrific Caymus wine and the best service. We wish Ahmed and everyone at Chez Joel a Merry Christmas and much prosperity, success, and happiness in the New Year!!
Our second visit to this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The dining room was full and cozy, but the noise was not overwhelming. The atmosphere was festive and welcoming. Our waitress appeared to be one of only 2, but she was incredibly efficient, with the just the right amount of attentiveness. The courses were nicely paced - we did not feel rushed but also were not waiting too long. She made a great wine recommendation. Our food was well-prepared, with distinct flavors. The bread was very good - nice combination of crusty and chewy. Our appetizers and main courses were excellent. We even shared a dessert, which is rare - and it was worth it. Overall a great dining experience and we look forward to returning.
It was our first time but several friends recommended it. They were right. We had a wonderful meal. The room was filled so we were happy we had a reservation. Food was excellent quality and prepared in an authentic French manner. Our waiter recommended an excellent cocktail, followed by delicious salads. We had the rack of lamb and the duck confit. Both were done perfectly. We spent a leisurely evening; never rushed. We will be back for more.
Fantastic food and wine selection! Everything tastes great at Chez Joel! My wife and I go there one or two times a year. It’s great food at a reasonable price. We lived in France five years and this food reminds us of our favorite restaurants there.
A charming restaurant...good food thoughtfully prepared and attractivel presented. A wait staff that is alert, but not intrusive...a place to dine, a place to linger and a place to come back again.
AWESOME - FILET MIGNON MEDIUM WITH DELICIOUS SAUCE PREPARED TO PERFECTION WITH MASHED POTATO AND GREEN BEANS (MY FAVORITE SIDES), APPLE TART FOR DESERT - HEAVENLY. GREAT SERVICE. WIFE HAD PEPPER STEAK - SHE LOVED IT.
Always a treat! Authentic food and French restaurant experience.
Chez Joel is always perfect.
Our dining experience at Chez Joel was outstanding. The food and ambience were outstanding!! It’s a very romantic atmosphere and the service was top notch!
Excellent French classics at reasonable price
Good value. Tables a bit close to one another but worked iut
Everything was fabulous. Highly recommend. I love French food, and this was like being in Paris
Nicely located French restaurant down in little Italy, not far from downtown. Restaurant has a nice Parisian feel, not too many seats, with good spacing with a unique French style and a small "sit-at-bar". Menu is very French with a biased to traditional French cuisine. Started with the French Onion soup (Soupe à l'Oignon Gratinée), which was just OK, too sweet, very bland (no beef stock, in fact no stock used at all), overall really disappointed signature dish, the chef needs to really rethink this dish. The warm brie cheese (Fromage de Brie Chaud) was nice, but again, the plate was red-hot so this had been re-heated, please don't do that.
The salads are very nice, they can be rather predictable and boring (to be honest) in Chicago, but this walnut salad (Salade Maison) was nicely presented with a nice complex mix of flavors. The Steak Grillé au Poivre (Peppered steak) was nicely done, just pink, with great shoe string fries.
Didn't do the deserts or coffee.
Wine list is fairly comprehensive, could do with more variety, with more influence on French wines by the glass, no-one really recommended any vintage with the order (or before), so that was a little disappointing.
Overall it's a nice restaurant, just needs to check the menu a little more and tighten up on some of the dishes, reasonably priced, easy to get too, not too crowded because of the space between the tables.
Overall a good choice, but not sensational.
Maggie, our server, is excellent. Ask for her!! And the pre fixe meal if you order before 6:30 PM is worth every penny!!
Good French bistro food, well prepared and delicious. Good value. Great service and ambiance
Fabulous and delicious. I am from Michigan. I will definitely be back when visiting Chicago
Loved it as always! Great food and good wine. Would highly recommend.
Great dinner as always. Special attention paid to those having dinner. Recommend.
We have been to Chez Joel many time. It is always always a pleasure to dine there. Our wait staff were fabulous as was the food on a busy Saturday night.
Neighborhood gem in Little Italy.
