Chez Joel Ratings and Reviews
Absolute favorite restaurant! I have been coming since I was a child to special family events and now celebrate wedding anniversaries with my husband here. The food is sinfully good, I have never had anything that wasn’t amazing. The service and owner are fantastic. The decor and thoughtfulness of every aspect of the restaurant is great. A must go!
I love the relaxed feel of the restaurant. The service was well-timed and friendly. The menu for restaurant week was a great variety for those wanting a meat or meatless option. I would love to return to explore more of the menu. The mushroom soup with truffle oil was amazing. The salad was refreshing. The Mussels and sauce they were prepared in were amazing. The steak was very tender. I loved that the cremé brûlée had the right touch of sweetness.
It was my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised with how full we left after enjoying the restaurant week menu options. I recommend the escargot, the sauce it comes in is delicious. The salmon was also excellent. Our server, I think Agnes is her name, was very nice and attentive.
The only downside was another server, who looked like Wario, was very rude to a busser that accidentally dropped silverware. The server yelled at him on the floor and seemed to be agitated with everyone he worked with. It was very unprofessional, I hate to see people treat their co-workers like that.
There was also a really cold draft coming from somewhere, possibly a back door of the restaurant.
Overall my date and I would come here again to enjoy the good food and romantic atmosphere.
First time at Chez Joel with my partner, we were due for a nice date night and decided to give this restaurant a try during Restaurant week. No regrets what so ever, every one was very friendly and helpful. Plus the food was amazing in our opinion. We had the Cornish hen and NY steak strip, as our main course and everything was cooked as asked and came out in a timely fashion. We definitely will be going again.
We think of chez Joel always for a special occasion because the food is delicious, the ambience festive and the service very attentive. We’ve never been disappointed.
Even though this is not our immediate neighborhood, we never feel the drive is burdensome. The valet service is efficient and reliable.
The escargot was good, but not amazing. My husband’s salmon was out of this world - done to perfection. The steak I ordered was tasty too. Desert was simply divine and I would definitely recommend trying the creme brûlée. I was a little disappointed with the French 75 cocktail I ordered but that’s because I like my cocktails on the sweet side. Overall, this place is a neighborhood gem and a definite repeat!
The food and service at Chez Joel was very good. I was disappointed that I could not use my Dining Reward Card because they did not know how to process it. I hope Open Table will instruct all of their participating restaurants on how to process the Reward Cards. This experience will not stop me from returning to this restaurant.
Beautiful, quaint, French bistro with great tasting food. First time there and cannot wait to go back. Food was wonderful and the portions were just right. Went for restaurant week and enjoyed what they had to offer on the menu. Will surely return and order off the regular menu next time. It looked great!!!! It is, however, very small inside. Tables are very close together. I find that to be like restaurants in Paris. The small places were always the best. This is one of the best in Chicago as far as French food and atmosphere.
Was there during Restaurant Week and really enjoyed the visit. The escargot were delicious, although a tad on the small size. The onion soup was very good. Our entrees were salmon and cornish hen. Both were excellent. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse. You feel like you are in a small bistro in France. The service was excellent. Only one thing to beware of...if you don't want to pay extra for the "specialty" waters (Perrier or Evian) be sure to decline when they come over and ask you which you would prefer.
Very good food! You really feel like you've entered a cozy little restaurant in France. Waiter(esses) were very helpful and friendly. Only downsides were that it was pretty noisy and got very hot as it is a small, crowded restaurant. This made it a little difficult to enjoy the food and conversation at times. However, overall a very good spot for a date night out!
We've been to Chez Joel several times, and we love it. We were there this time for Restaurant Week and thoroughly enjoyed it -- what a great value! The food was excellent -- my husband had the steak frites, and I had the salmon. The service and ambience were also lovely.
Great experience at Chez Joel. We were greeted by the host when we arrived and immediately taken to our table. Our server was very attentive. The two of us shared three dishes: the beet salad, grilled calamari, and filet mignon entree. The portions were plentiful, delicious, and reasonably priced- it was perfect for two people. We shared a bottle of wonderful white cotes du rhone during dinner. Overall, enjoyed our experience, it was our first time here and we will return!
We loved everything about this restaurant! Wonderful selections, carefully prepared and served with every attention to detail. At the end of our dinner as we were leaving, I smelled the beautiful yellow rose on our table ... and the host gave it to me to take home. A lovely memory from a truly lovely experience!
