Known for its history of hosting many celebrity guests and socially prominent figures since it launched in 1959, this restaurant was declared a local landmark in 2012. It has the feeling of a small-town, local establishment despite its big city location and bustling surroundings. We had a great lunch. Our burgers and fries were fantastic and the ambiance was fun.

Small and cozy but it's got great style. Tasty steaks, full bar with a bartender who knows how to make an excellent martini. Our waiter was delightful and added to the charm of this gem.

Halibut even with sauce was bland. Scalloped potatoes were clearly from a box. Salad very basic. Wait staff very friendly and attentive. Loved the throw back music and vibe.

Chez Jays is a gem! My father was a regular over 40 years ago, so whenever he comes into town to visit I make sure to take him for their infamous butter steak. The ambiance is perfect for conversation, and the drinks are generous. We have always had not only good service but superior. Can't say enough great things about this restaurant!

Recommended to us by a friend and its a great spot but we didn't enjoy our meal at all - meat was fatty and just not very tasty...

Not an Abbott Kinney trend setter, but still a solid meal. A locals bar with lots of 50's and 60's (Sinatra, Monroe) in its ambiance.
Old school recipes for steaks, ahi and sand sand dabs worked fine. Guillermo and his assistant were spot on with their service.

I guess Chez Jay is considered a landmark, but the food is unimpressive. The chicken was a little dry and so was the fish. We ate there with out of state friends and we couldn’t carry a conversation because it was very noisy. The décor was interesting though.

It was a very hot weekend and Chez Jay only has fans. I guess most times it works out. But not on the night I went to eat. The food was good with somewhat expensive prices. But again it is Santa Monica. I would recommend it for drinks.

The dining experience was okay overall, but we were disappointed and almost got up and left when we first sat down and realized menu prices were significantly higher (approx. $5-$7) than advertised on Chez Jay's online menu. The chicken marsala advertised as $18.75 on the online menu was actually about $23 in the restaurant. Same with the butter steak. I ordered the soup and salad, which is advertised as $7.25 online and was $12.00 in the restaurant. This is deceiving and elevates the restaurant to another price range which we weren't expecting. Our meal was $25 more than we expected it to be, and I regret not leaving or saying something when we first noticed it. Our group was just too hungry and exhausted from a long day, so we just dealt with it. But if a restaurant puts the menu online, it should be their responsibility to update it accordingly. There's not really an excuse for not updating the website; there are so many tools and resources to do that these days. Also, the food really wasn't that good. Won't be going back.
