Chez Jay is an American steakhouse in Santa Monica, California. Known for its history of hosting many celebrity guests and socially prominent figures since it launched in 1959, this restaurant was declared a local landmark in 2012. It has the feeling of a small-town, local establishment despite its big city location and bustling surroundings. Sitting nearby the beach, this is a great spot to stop in for lunch or dinner with friends on the way to and from the ocean.
Cuisine on Chez Jay's menu is mainly a collection of seafood and steak dishes meant to please. Meal service is provided throughout the day for all meals. Popular entrees include the bone-in chicken Chez Jay, scampi rice pilaf, eastern cut coulette steak, top sirloin & shrimp combo and the butter steak with fine herbs. There is a full-service bar in the dining room with an extensive wine and cocktail list.
We had a great lunch. Our burgers and fries were fantastic and the ambiance was fun.
In addition, our server Mary was extremely attentive and very helpful as usual.
Please send her our thanks.
Small and cozy but it's got great style. Tasty steaks, full bar with a bartender who knows how to make an excellent martini. Our waiter was delightful and added to the charm of this gem.
Halibut even with sauce was bland. Scalloped potatoes were clearly from a box. Salad very basic. Wait staff very friendly and attentive. Loved the throw back music and vibe.
I love it here. A true classic. Special thanks to Mike, who made an extra effort to seat our large party.
Great little restaurant and bar in the neighborhood. Fast service and excellent food.
Great bar and food. Kind of s throwback. Good music playing. Unpretentious. Not too big.
Chez Jays is a gem! My father was a regular over 40 years ago, so whenever he comes into town to visit I make sure to take him for their infamous butter steak. The ambiance is perfect for conversation, and the drinks are generous. We have always had not only good service but superior. Can't say enough great things about this restaurant!
Recommended to us by a friend and its a great spot but we didn't enjoy our meal at all - meat was fatty and just not very tasty...
Not an Abbott Kinney trend setter, but still a solid meal. A locals bar with lots of 50's and 60's (Sinatra, Monroe) in its ambiance.
Old school recipes for steaks, ahi and sand sand dabs worked fine. Guillermo and his assistant were spot on with their service.
Fun place with great burgers and Mary's wonderful service. Please send her our thanks.
I guess Chez Jay is considered a landmark, but the food is unimpressive. The chicken was a little dry and so was the fish. We ate there with out of state friends and we couldn’t carry a conversation because it was very noisy. The décor was interesting though.
We loved this restaurant although at first we were scared to go in. The waiter it was an absolute gem and the food was very good.
Best burgers in town combined with Mary's wonderful service. Please send Mary our thanks!
It was a very hot weekend and Chez Jay only has fans. I guess most times it works out. But not on the night I went to eat. The food was good with somewhat expensive prices. But again it is Santa Monica. I would recommend it for drinks.
The dining experience was okay overall, but we were disappointed and almost got up and left when we first sat down and realized menu prices were significantly higher (approx. $5-$7) than advertised on Chez Jay's online menu. The chicken marsala advertised as $18.75 on the online menu was actually about $23 in the restaurant. Same with the butter steak. I ordered the soup and salad, which is advertised as $7.25 online and was $12.00 in the restaurant. This is deceiving and elevates the restaurant to another price range which we weren't expecting. Our meal was $25 more than we expected it to be, and I regret not leaving or saying something when we first noticed it. Our group was just too hungry and exhausted from a long day, so we just dealt with it. But if a restaurant puts the menu online, it should be their responsibility to update it accordingly. There's not really an excuse for not updating the website; there are so many tools and resources to do that these days. Also, the food really wasn't that good. Won't be going back.
For us, this is the best! We always enjoy the food and ambiance.
Our server Mary was exceptionally attentive. She always makes us feel special. Please convey this to her.
This is a historical landmark in Santa Monica, which has been visited by politicians and movie stars. But the restaurant is very small and crowded. Once we finally got seated (about 20 minutes after our reservation time), our waiter was attentive. The food is basic and well-prepared, but nothing special. We're glad that we went, but will probably not return.
although I had a reservation, when I got there, no employee was found to find us a seat. There were 3 couples outside as clueless as me. The place was crowded, noisy and the lights were dimmed. There was a waitress at the bar but she was too busy to talk to me. Being a tourist and visiting the place for the first time, I got really frustrated and disappointed and would never recommend this place. I ended up having a wonderful dinner at another place, with enough employees to give their clients some attention.
On a Sunday night when Santa Monica was the most crowded I have ever seen in 35 years, we got to Chez Jay on time after wending our way through the traffic. It was crowded in the restuarant too, but when I spoke to the manager/waiter and said we had a reservation for 2 for 6:15, he immediately sat us in a quiet room-which was PERFECT. A greeter type man later told us Marilyn Monroe sat there (her picture was hanging) and Henry Kissinger would sit there when he worked at Rand. There is a list of all the stars that have been there over the years, and I think it is a true list. Anyway, it was fun.
The food was very good, and they give a large steak and a large piece of salmon, compared to all the other restaurants. Plenty to eat and enjoy, and then take to go. The prices are reasonable, and all in all, it is definitely a "worth it" experience.
Great restaurant and bar, I went with my girlfriend for dinner for Valentine's Day. We were looking for something in the Santa Monica area that was a bit more low key and not presumptuous. Chez Jay was perfect! My girlfriend loves steak and this has to be one of the best in Santa Monica or LA. Thanks chez jay!
You've got the right stuff!
We always love going to Chez Jay! Delicious food and warm atmosphere.
If it's just a casual atmosphere you seek, with a comfort food surf/turf menu and a non trendy bar... Then welcome! It is what it is... Nothing more, but jukebox is always playing.
We were not sure what to expect from Chez Jay, but when we arrived we found a very eclectic/laid back atmosphere. It's a tiny place and every table was full. I spoke with the current owner for while waiting for the rest of my party and he summed it up perfectly: people come for the vibe. The food is still decent, but the atmosphere is definitely what attracts the locals. We were surprised to notice during our meal that Owen Wilson was at a table nearby and later we noticed Ty Pennington was there as well, so overall it was a very memorable night for us and if you are interested in a laid back dining experience, this would be a great choice.
In a city where ostentatious, over-hyped and overpriced restaurants are plentiful, Chez Jay stands out for what a patron really wants- good food and good service. It appeared the establishment was undergoing some repairs and updates which is a positive move, but my party actually found the slight shabbiness about the building and environs non-pretentious and charming. The food and service was excellent. A couple of bonuses for us were a beautiful accessibility ramp and a warm greeting by one of the owners who shared his pride in the history of his restaurant.
Great burgers expertly served by our excellent waitress Mary. Please send her our thanks.
Our waiter Tracy went above and beyond to make us feel special and taken care of. The food, as always was excellent and the ambiance is festive without being overly noisy.
The service was excellent as usual. Chez Jay has the best burgers in town.
Doesn't look like much from the outside, but that's part of the charm. The crowd... the history... the staff... and the food all make it worth it! I've been coming here for 20 years and indoctrinated two friends this past weekend and we are still texting about how great it was. The NY Strip Fiondella... nuts how good it is.
What a fun place for an evening drink or to soak in the Santa Monica "dive bar" scene. Staff is very attentive and friendly. We went stopped in on a very hot, humid evening and without A/C this place was just too hot to eat food; the food itself was OK and maybe without the heat the food might make 3 stars. Overall this is a fun place and we would go there again. thank you to Open Table for helping us find this cool place.
This is a Santa Monica institution. Classic decorum. Always "regulars" at the bar. Great, simple menu. Old School adult beverages. If you're visiting Santa Monica, this place should be on your "must visit" list. It's right next to the new Tongva Park which is incredibly beautiful. C'mon! Let's go!
This place is more "dive bar" than restaurant, but it has a sense of humor with the french offerings on the menu. The food is solid and in places quite good, but perhaps a bit pricey. Come for the beer, and stay for the beer. :) No air conditioning, but who cares. That crowd doesn't belong here!
The atmosphere of this neighborhood restaurant is very retro. The food was excellent! We had the mahi mahi special, fillet minion and steak and shrimp and they were all great.
The reviews of Chez Jay did not reflect my experience. Sure the staff were friendly and the bar has a certain vibe, but the food was average at best!
A trip down memory lane...been coming since late sixties
Not hidden in the sense of hard to find, but should not be judged by exterior looks. Inside is friendliness, good service and great food. Feels like anybody could be walking in. Like!
delicious steaks and manhattans. a great mix of older and younger crowd. mainly locals
Always wanted to try the local place. Right across from the beach, old school streak house, hole in the wall. Excellent service, good food.
It rests on its laurels. From our poor elderly waiter who quite literally had Alzheimer's. Three times asked by him if we were ready to order right after we had ordered.... Three bread baskets left on the table, no silverware, no water despite numerous asks. (I empathize if this is loyalty to an elderly employee, but have the decency to provide back up support for him. No other waitstaff came to our table to help) There were only two other tables occupied in the restaurant. One of which was an obnoxious drink family with several people who should have not been served alcohol after a certain point, like as in screaming and being unable to walk....was great to watch them go to the valet to get their car......My rare steak was grey and rubber.
