Chez Catherine Ratings and Reviews
Absolutely wonderful birthday dinner for the wife. Every bite, from the bread to the final dessert, was spectacular. I had escargot, which I've not had in years, and it was delicious. For my meal, I had scallops, and they were the best.
Wish I could go there more often!
Restaurant has been around since 1979 and there is a reason for that. The food is superb, excellently prepared and presented. The wait staff is attentive. We had a water glass accidentally spill at our table, and they could not do enough to assist us. The choices are limited but the restaurant is small, focusing on preparing a few seasonal dishes and one special, rather than providing so many choices that it takes forever to get through the menu. Liquor prices are high, but the selection is extensive for such a small restaurant. Overall, it was excellent.
I really wanted to like it here. But the food was just meh. There was a slightly musty smell when we walked in. The French bread didn't seem fresh. The salad was ok. The duck pate wayyyyy too salty with a stale ish crust of cranberry nut toast. The waiter seemed insulted I didn't eat more of the pate, instead of asking why. The duck breast and dessert were both delicious however, but we've been at better restaurants for the money.
What a fabulous luncheon. The French Business Lunch food was outstanding. The service was en pointe, and very gracious. The environment was very warm and welcoming, as was the staff. We even had leftovers, including their delicious bread. This was our first time at Chez Catherine, and we look forward to returning there, again, in the future. Four Stars seems to be the best rating the Star Ledger gives, however, we'd award 5 Stars. Many thanks, Laura & John
Outstanding food and service in a romantic setting; we had carrot & ginger soup, mushroom risotto, filet mignon and Dover sole (with table-side preparation), sorbet between courses, mixed berry salad and pistachio creme brûlée. Highly recommend the Dover sole! Pinot noir and chardonnay as recommended by the maitre d and both were an excellent pairing. Romantic ambiance, food was top notch, we will certainly be back.
Absolutely beautiful ambience, low key with the quiet elegance of being at someone's home. It was fun.
The soups are amazing, the escargot is always good. The bread was crisp and the service was incredible . The Dover sole was delicious and the raspberry soufflé and cappuccino delicious. Staff very friendly. I personally thanked the chef for the great job. My favorite restaurant!
Upon entering Chez Catherine you immediately feel that you are in a special place. The mood is elegant & people are speaking quietly. It feels a bit sophisticated. The new owners have updated the mostly French menu with delicious food options & a broad wine list. The desserts were spectacular.
Every time there is a change at Chez Catherine it just gets one step better. It is just impeccable French cuisine. I rate restaurants on Atmosphere, Service and, of course, the food. Tis place is a continuing winner. Bravo Stephen on the transition.

Needs a makeover badly. The food is traditional French and properly prepared, but certainly nothing special. The decor is horribly dated and, to be honest, the place smells s bit musty. For a $300+ dinner, I expected something much more.
Although the food was prepared well the upcharges for the pre fix menu were extreme also the owner also the waiter was nice but we asked for a port after dinner and to try to be funny I guess he said no I will bring you something else which he did I assume it was a dessert wine to compliment the dessert my wife had but we really didnt care for it , we wanted a tawny port. But I guess he felt he knew better then his customers. Hint give the customers what they want. also dinner for two with one glass of champagne and a $60 bottle of wine and one espresso along with the dessert wine we didnt like ended up being $303 not including a $60 tip . thats pretty steep for westfield nj next to a best western hotel.
We had a family celebration at Chez Catherine with eight of us and the food was fabulous. Every plate was a little work of art with strokes of sauces and accents of fresh fruits or vegetables. We all cleaned our plates! Mussels were especially popular with wonderful bread to sop up all that delicious sauce. The fillet mignon and the scallops were both perfectly cooked with creative sides like marble potatoes and avocado salad. The dessert special was a butterscotch mousse with roasted nectarines and the creme brulee was melt in your mouth wonderful. The gracious service completed the experience. My niece proclaimed it "a perfect meal, the best I've ever had!" Thank you to Stephane and the chefs for such a beautiful experience.
We particularly enjoyed this visit to Chez Catherine's because of the exceptional conversational skills of both the waiter and maître d' and the delightful ambiance of the restaurant, its food, and the people serving us made for a perfect blend.
We shall return.
Chez Catherine is our favorite spot for special occasions. The tasting menu makes it accesible for casual meals as well. The new décor is welcoming and elegant. We always leave impressed with the ambiance and quality of the meal. It seems to be getting even better.
My husband and I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Chez Catherine recently. Every course was prepared to perfection! I started with the risotto which was followed by a medium rare pan seared salmon that was perfectly done by chef Christine. My husband enjoyed the Dover Sole which is always a special treat to watch Stephan expertly prepare it tableside. For dessert my husband had the floating island and I had the mango souffle with an incredible raspberry sauce. Needless to say, we both cleaned our plates! The newly renovated Chez Catherine with its warm, inviting, elegant atmosphere and impeccable service is always an enjoyable experience. A truly authentic French restaurant experience right here in New Jersey!
We went expecting a nice dinner but were pleasantly surprised with a GREAT meal in sophisticated surroundings with just the right attention from the staff. We had table side prepared steak tartare to start and the summer scallops and dover sole which was also prepared table side for the main course. Delicious! The fresh berries, cheese plate and an expresso martini were great ways to end the meal. Well worth the drive to enjoy this very special Westfield gem. We enjoy great restaurants and this one is now at the top of our list.
A hidden gem.
A hidden gem.
I had a business meeting in New Jersey and stayed at a Best Western in Westfield, NJ. I asked the people at the hotel if they had a restaurant, but they did not. They said there was a small French restaurant next door. They didn't know much about it, other than it was said to be a little pricey. But it was raining and i didn't want to drive anywhere, so I thought, why not give it a try? Am I glad I did! It was exceptionally good. I lived in France for a couple of years and go back often, and I must say this was as good as any meal I have had there.
I started with foie gras accompanied by a nice Monbazillac. Main course of magret du canard with a Louis Latour Pinot noir. The duck was possibly the best I've ever had. And for dessert, just a glass of Calvados. Excellent meal. Totally unexpected.
The ambiance was very nice as well. It is a small place, but tastefully decorated and very quiet. The service was excellent. All in all, a fabulous meal. I'd definitely recommend it, and will go back again.
Starting with the amuse-bouche, the meal was fabulous. For the first course we both had the rye crusted shimp over corn/bacon "salad". The only thing I could possibly say was more of the corn salad would have been nice. We then had the cod and the scallops. Both were cooked to perfection.
The down side was dessert. We had the bread pudding that was just, not good. Tasted like stuffing, not dessert.
The pear souffle was....eggy. too eggy. a wee not rubbery but the texture was off. IfI hadn't known it was pear, I never would have guessed.
Last, the creme brulee was, at least, decent.
But the savory foods? OUTSTANDING!!!
It was my birthday. There is no better place to celebrate a happy event than Chez Catherine. From the minute you walk in the door with a "bon jour" to the minute you depart with an "au revoir", you fee special. We have been dining at Chez Catherine for years and since their recent renovation with the ownership change to Stephane, it is brighter and even more cordial. You almost feel like family. Stephane, Vincent, and their wonderful chef, Christine and her staff really make your special day one to remember. Thank you to all of you.
Went here for a friend's birthday. Yet another truly top-notch restaurant experience. Managed to make a last minute reservation at this small neighborhood gem. Got held up by a major traffic incident, and called in to reschedule the reservation to a later time. The gentleman with whom I spoke on the phone was incredibly understanding of my predicament. We managed to make it to the restaurant approximately 30 minutes later than anticipated. We were greeted warmly by two waiters, both of whom took extremely good care of us over the course of the evening. We each selected a four-course meal. The risotto, filet and desserts were all incredible. I also enjoyed a few glasses of a fine Syrah, while my friend opted for a glass of champagne to celebrate his nameday. The service was truly outstanding. As expected, a substantial bill arrived at meal's end, though this was no surprise. It's difficult to place a numerical value on a good time and an excellent dining experience though, in my estimation. If you can stomach the price, you won't regret a visit to this wonderful establishment.
