Chez Catherine is our annual Anniversary celebration spot. The exquisite French Cuisine is absolutely delicious and expertly served. I would highly recommend this restaurant. It is very small and intimate, so reservations are a must. This is a winner!
My friend and I go to Chez Catherine for our birthday dinner every year. We are never disappointed in the food, the service, ....we love it all.
I’ve been wanting to go there for a long time. We went for my birthday. I am a fan of French food and thoroughly enjoyed everything. I took my mom and girlfriend, they are not as much into the cuisine as I am, but, both enjoyed their meals thoroughly. The service was exceptional and the ambience was quaint and intimate. It is an expensive meal, however, for that type of restaurant and evening, it was not out of line. I will definitely return.
We both had the prix fixe menu. From appetizers to dessert, everything was excellent. Lobster bisque and Prince Edward mussels , salmon and filet mignon, topped off buy the best chocolate mousse I have ever had.
Do not miss this experience.
Food was great, my wife duck was a little undercook and my dessert creme brulee crust was a little burnt but overall great experience
Perfect for Christmas Eve!
The food was delicious. Our waiter recommended wines for each course, which made the experience even better.
second time at chez Catherine. Everything is top shelf - great food and service.
A wonderful evening. Service, wine, food all impeccable. Not for everyday dining, unless you have a fat wallet, but would be my choice for any special occasion.
Delightful and very good food
While sitting In a dining room that only seats about 20, I could have been in France. The ambience and food did not disappoint. Timing was perfect as was the food.
Wonderful experience and looking forward to many visits in the future.
It is very expensive, resting on the reputation of its original chef-owner of many years ago. The food is well prepared, but the service is pretentious, slow and not attentive. Current (third) owner waits on tables instead of supervising what is going on in the restaurant. Need to have more staff to be in line with its pricing. Then, maybe it can be OK again like it was with the second owner.
meal and service was fine. At the end of the meal we asked for refills on 2 coffees. We were charged $4 for each refill. We were charged $4 for each of the coffees we ordered and this was the first time I can remember being charged for 2 refills. On a close to $400 bill I cannot see why they would ruin a good dining experience by being so petty to charge for coffee refills
We dine frequently in Westfield but had never tried Chez Catherine. Well if you haven't and you are looking for a great special occasion place you should seriously consider it. Service is professional and accommodating and the food was perfection from start to finish. I have never had duck breast that was better prepared. And the entire place including the men's room is absolutely spotless. It's not cheap but that's not what they're about. Don't miss this great local French gem!
Great ambiance, great food, great location, great service, great experience.
Excellent experience! Excellent food! We are heading back this weekend.
The meal was terrific.
I absolutely enjoyed my dinner. I worked all day at a craft show in Westfield, and this was my treat to myself to have a wonderful dinner. Everybody was kind, attentive and friendly. I not only enjoyed my own meal, I enjoyed watching the waiter prepare 2 dishes for the table next to me. I intend to come here for dinner again next year (we have the show every year at the Armory)
Thank you for a most enjoyable and delicious meal.
Great food but the atmosphere isn’t the greatest.
I have been wanting to dine at Chex Catherine for a long time. It was well worth the wait! Extraordinary!
Amazing to find a classic, almost retro, French meal these days. I had escargots, duck breast and creme brûlée. And an excellent wine and digestifs list.
For our 11th anniversary my wife and I visited Chez Catherine for the first time. Everything was perfect from the time we stepped thru the door to our last bite of dessert. We found the wait staff to be brilliant and a pleasure to converse with. The food speaks for itself, words will not do it justice. We will back back shortly!
One cannot say enough about the Magnificent food and how it is presentation... the staff is wonderful extremely friendly.
As usual, this was an excellent dining experience. The ambiance is authentic French and Stephane and his staff were attentive. My wife usually gets the dover sole and it was excellent. The prix fixe is a wonderful value which allows us to come here more often then only special occasions.
I took my wife on a date there and had a wonderful time. the food was amazing and the atmosphere was just right. I can't wait to do it again soon.
Quaint. Elegant. Just right. No need to drive into NYC every week. Perfectness is a short drive or walk away.
I was visiting my parents this weekend and they had such fond memories of Chez Catherine from their only other time there 25 years ago that I decided we should return (my first time). It is a tiny little place with a semi-formal but warm ambiance, tucked into a little slice of charming Westfield, NJ. The prix-fixe menu had enough offerings to satisfy a range of paletes, but given the base price ($75 for an appetizer, entree and dessert), the upcharges for some items was a bit annoying, if somewhat understandable (yes, arugula is much cheaper than foix gras, but why do it prix fixe then anyway? - you could simply add some spectacular mozzarella di bufala and a bit o' fresh truffle to that salad and call it a wash, no?). Aside from that small annoyance, the food did not disappoint: that arugula salad was delicious, and my lobster salad (which required the upcharge) was simultaneously sweet, rich and refreshing. My mom had the chicken offering which she thoroughly enjoyed, while dad devoured the scallops with gusto. I had the filet mignon which I ordered medium rare but it unfortunately arrived a bit overcooked, although the sauce it was served with almost completely made up for that deficit. Our desserts were the superstars of the evening in my opinion. Mom had a pound cake baked 'in the round' with ice cream and strawberries that she scraped up every crumb of, while dad thoroughly enjoyed a classic creme brulee, which I ordinarily order. However, I decided to try the hazelnut souffle, which was a standout bit o' heaven: light, lush, almost smoky in its 'hazelnut-ness': truly outstanding! Overall I think this is a (hidden? not sure) gem of a restaurant that truly cares about offering up authentic french cuisine. Wonderful!
Good but not great. Not much value for the cost. My main dish was tasteless.
Amazing food service and dinner! Top 👍
This was one of the worst restaurants I have eaten in a long time! Everything was over salted, and the soufflé was just inedible!! Never go back!! We
Everything about this restaurant was excellent. All of the dishes in our price fixed menu were delicious as was the service.
Every aspect of our meal was just outstanding as always—food, service, atmosphere. One of the best dinners I have ever had.
Wonderful and extremely well prepared meal. PI Mussels were outstanding but do NOT miss the Lemon citron ice cream for dessert!!
Everything about was very nice, but the noise level was very distracting. It was hard to enjoy the evening.
The owner, host, waiter, busboy, bartender (all the same person) spread himself too thin.
As always a superb dining experience - cusine and service
I've been dining at this restaurant since it opened. The quality of the food and the service has always been excellent. The current owner enjoys people and provides information about the dishes served in a way that is supportive rather than snobby. He did a great job educating my son about the "right way" to eat escargot, which he now loves. The restaurant also treated my daughter and three of her friends well when she hosted her guests in April (without Mom or Dad) to celebrate her sixteenth birthday. Chez Catherine remains a favorite of my parents, who no longer live in New Jersey, and they make an effort to eat there each time they are in town.
Birthday dinner. Very not very presentation of dessert on a birthday plate. Service was impeccable. Friendly service and great atmosphere. One of my favorite restaurants. The first time at the restaurant for the birthday person. He was very impressed.
For "Chez Catherine" reputation I expected much more for what I got for my money. The appetizer labelled as Prince Edwards Island Mussels had an extremely salty taste and the mussel shells were practically empty.
I also ordered the filet mignon which was ok, nothing special. All in all this restaurant does not deserve the five star statue.
great wine selection at reasonable prices, informed servers, and chef clearly knows his way around the kitchen with moms made desert a winner....
