Chez Billy in Washington, DC is a French restaurant that highlights chef Brendan L'Etoile's excellent skills. Emphasizing southern French cuisine, the menu also incorporates an array of handcrafted cocktails and an extensive wine list selected to pair perfectly with the food.
Guests of Chez Billy can opt for brunch, lunch or dinner. The main dinner menu features hors d'oeuvres, entres and desserts. The starters include salads and pates, as well as soups and rillettes. There entres include confit of canard, cassoulet and classic steak frites. A dessert at Chez Billy is also a must, and the pistachio pots de crme or the dome au chocolate are but a few of the choices.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We had the bluefish rillettes and asparagus as appetizers, duck confit and gnocchi for dinner, and the seasonal crepe for dessert. They had some interesting cocktails and nice wine choices that weren't too pricy.
I booked a large table at Chez Billy to bring new friends and old friends together. EVERYONE loved the food, from the trout with pureed parsnips to the ricotta gnocchi. We loved having the $4 Kir Royales for our aperitif. The service was the best I've had in DC. Truly professional, accommodating. Never ending supply of warm bread! Very friendly and low key. No attitude like you find in so many places in DC. Really interesting and diverse staff too- cool ambiance. Had a great time. (If you are eating or drinking on the patio, wear deet- mosquitoes galore.)
Chez Billy was fantastic. The atmosphere was lovely and the food had so much flavor. There was also a great selection of wine to choose from. I would recommend and I would dine here again.
Love this place -- it's always a pleasure and the food is great.
Mousse was incredible
Good menu, excellent dishes; apps, entre and desert!
A group of 6 of us ate here while we were visiting DC. We were only able to get a 9:30pm reservation, and the restaurant closes at 10pm, but they didn't rush us at all, and we ended up staying there until midnight. The service was excellent, the food was solid. Had a great salad and the duck confit, and really enjoyed the creative cocktails. Also I love that the Petworth area is developing, thanks to establishments like this Chez Billy!
Love the atmosphere - great food, but not at all pretentious. Good noise level too, not too loud but it never feels dead. Fantastic cocktails too.
Dinner was delicious and the service was great. Love the neighborhood feel of this place and that the food is upscale. We really loved the trout with the lemon caper butter. Wish my stomach had been more agreeable as I really wanted to try dessert- they looked amazing!
The service was atrocious. It ruined the evening for us.
Total letdown! Felt rushed. They forgot to give us bread until we asked and had our second course by then. Unprofessional staff. Food below average Faux French. Does not live up to its hype. Just another tired old restaurant that we will never go back to or recommend.
On a Saturday night, the service was rushed. We had the impression they were trying to move the table. While the server was friendly, we were asked to order our food before our drinks arrived, and received our first course before we had taken two sips of our drinks. The food was also over-salted and far too gloppy for a French restaurant.
It's hit or miss food wise, however, this latest adventure was perfect. The meats were cooked to perfection, and they had a true caesar salad (albeit deconstructed). Great vibe and simple decor. Great neighborhood gem. It's either quiet or packed...I can't figure it out.
Fantastic find in DC - we loved the atmosphere and the food was divine. Really perfect for our occasion.
At 6:30 P on Sat, admittedly early, but it is not clear to me why this absolute gem of a restaurant, with superb dishes, great friendly service, and reasonable prices was not packed. Everything about the meal and experience was great; we will be back!
I love this neighborhood joint - it's good French food, a bit fancy but worth it. You must try the Paris-Brest for dessert - simply divine!
Food was good, but lacked variety. Desserts were mediocre. Service was bad, waitress forgot to put our order in multiple times and overall the staff was unenthusiastic. We will not return.
This was my first visit to Chez Billy, and I will definitely return. The food was well-prepared and delicious. My friend had the salmon, and I had the trout, and we were both delighted with our selections. I was disappointed that my first choice for a bottle of wine turned out to be unavailable, but the recommended substitute was very good. We shared the Paris-Brest for dessert, and loved every morsel! It seems to be a lovely neighborhood gem, as well as a place worth the trip from outside the area. The service was good, not great, but certainly nothing to keep me from going back. I've already recommended the restaurant to someone else.
We've been to Chez Billy several times now and have always enjoyed it. I always have the Daube -- which is actually short ribs; they're always tender and delicious. My husband had the duck, which he enjoyed. We shared a smoked trout pate appetizer that was delicious. They also serve delicious bread. We were a bit disappointed that out entrees came so fast; no time to chat and settle in. I also wish the menu were changed up a bit from time to time. But it's always a nice experience there.
We enjoyed the brunch at Chez Billy. We went on Mother's Day with our 2-year-old. The place is kid friendly and had tasty food. The service was a bit off (simple things, like we never got our coffee). But otherwise the food was good and the place is a nice joint to hit up with kids. I'd be curious to try other meals there.
Chez Billy was great for a special occasion date night. Food was spectacular, and the portions weren't too big or to small. The steak frites was incredibly juicy, and the trout was excellent as well.
This is a French steakhouse. They have a short, simple menu but something for everyone. Each dish was presented well and flavorful. This is truly a hidden gem and I can't wait to go back!
These guys have excellent wine, cocktails, and seafood. Lovely service. Such a perfect night.
Sadly, CB has gone down hill. They were out of our first choice in both wine and dessert. Mussels were bland, completely lacking any flavor. I also chipped my tooth on an iridescent nodule from the mussels. Mistakenly, I deferred in saying something because I was embarrassed that I selected the restaurant and had been raving about it. However, when my dining partner and I swapped plates, after two mussels, he looked at me and said very honestly, "this is not good at all." Unfortunately our server never stopped by our table until it was time to clear out plates. Though I told him of our disappointing experience with the flavorless mussels, he did not remove the mussels from the bill because he said we had eaten too many (about half) until I pushed back. My other dining partners liked their entrees: steak frites (with amazing fries) and trout. Creme brûlée was only fair. I won't be back. Go to Le Diplomate instead - always on point and great service.
A couple of months ago husband and I had a very Meh-hinging-on-bad-experience at Chez B, and I almost did not make this reservation. But it was a Sunday night Bday celebration, I knew everyone was tired and the ambience was right. Glad I did, kitchen was humming, there were several very tempting fish and vegetarian options for my pescetarian. And a truly great chocolate mousse! I love the ambience here, so happy that our prior was just an off night.
Good food, good value, low key. They have a menu error which they need to correct, but otherwise a good combination of old favorites and inventive new dishes.
Food was excellent. Rare these days for food to arrive hot but not overcooked. Too great fish dishes.
Loved everything about this restaurant except the food.
My mussels were almost non existing and were dried up as well
My son's salmon was a minuscule portion for the price!
Loved the atmosphere , help, ambiance, everything except the food!!!!L
I just dined for the second time in two months. I love everything about this restaurant and will keep coming back!!
Lovely restaurant - perfect for date night. Excellent French-Continental cuisine. Highly recommended.
This is perhaps my 6th or 7th visit to Chez Billy--and I'm happy to say that it is consistently very good! This time, I had a sea bass with Mediterranean vegetables that was superb! The sea bass was cooked to crispy perfection while remaining moist inside--and the flavors of the vegetables complemented the fish nicely. My only critique of Chez Billy is that the menu is rather limited and it doesn't change often. Seems like they only do a winter menu and a summer menu. I would go much more often if they changed things up a bit more.
My husband and I had a date night to celebrate my birthday and we are glad we came to Chez Billy. The food, service and ambiance were great. We shared a bottle of Bordeaux that was a good deal at $36 I thought. I would highly recommend the roasted beet salad for an appetizer. It was absolutely delicious. My husband got the house pate and that was good as well but not nearly as good as those beets. For entrees, I had the trout which was fantastic. Hubs had the duck which he liked. I do not eat duck so did not taste. We skipped dessert but shared a delicious Calvados (overpriced at $12 for probably not even 1 full ounce) and a French press coffee. We had a great time and would recommend to others.
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and it was excellent all around. Our server was warm and friendly and took great care of us. We also were in a nice back corner that allowed us to have a full on conversation in a normal tone of voice.
The food itself was phenomenal. I can't say enough good things about the butternut squash soup and the roasted chicken. I don't eat seafood but I would venture it's awesome as well.
Chez Billy is a very positive addition to the Petworth area. Food and service are terrific
This is our third time at Chez Billy, but the least enjoyable. The food is still good, and still too noisy to have a decent conversation, although we knew this before going back. But the service this time was not so good. Our waiter made a few quick pass-bys once we were served, not lingering long enough for us to actually request anything. I was not able to summon him for pepper on my salad (which should've been offered without my asking) and finally finished it before he appeared again. We also sat with empty wine glasses, vainly trying to flag down the waiter. We live in the vicinity but won't be going back too soon, especially with the number of other good places to eat in Petworth. On a positive note, the hostess at the door was excellent and gracious, apologizing for a wait for our table, and informing us of the progress toward seating.
Very nice restaurant. The food was good. Nice ambiance. We dined early so no noise issues.
Chez Billy was a gourmet treat! Went with my boyfriend on Valentine's Day and ordered wine, gnocchi, and their apple toddy. I was literally in hog heaven...!
The only sour note was that no one said goodbye to us as we left, and we must have walked by ten different staff members.
One of my favorite restaurants in DC. The chicken liver was incredible. Never have I ever been disappointed. Good value too.
Went for Valentine's Day dinner and had a lovely meal. The service was great and the waitstaff was friendly.
My partner and I dined at Chez Billy's for the first time on Valentine's Day. I'm kicking myself for not having gone here sooner. Everything from the French Onion Soup and Caesar Salad to the chef's special of herb crusted lighted seared tuna was spectacular. PLEASE keep the tuna on the menu! We will be coming back for more. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.
