Chestnut Ratings and Reviews
We found Chestnut by chance, looking on Google. We had eaten at sister restaurant Corner Cafe a number of times but didn't know about Chestnut. It was a pleasant surprise. Retro decor, top notch wait staff, and tasty food. For lunch, we split the kale salad with calamari followed by the bread pudding. Both dishes were excellent. Highly recommend Chestnut.
We've been to Chestnut 2 times before and LOVED it! But the menu has changed and it's less-wonderful than it was before. The Chestnut Salad was changed and ordinary (it used the be so great), and our whole fish was blah. Appetiser was good and we might have it again. (Sorry but don't remember what it was; a lot has happened since the end of Dec'16). Other couple was pleased but not wow'd as we told they they would be. We didn't have dessert since we hadn't been quite as pleased with the dinner.
FYI, because it was just good, I wondered if they'd changed chefs or ownership in the past 2 years, but they have not.
This was a last minute dinner plan with the husband since we were on vacation for our one year anniversary. This place was amazing. The steaks were cooked perfectly and we shared a vanilla bourbon creme brulee and I'm pretty sure my husband ate more of it than I did and I am the dessert person.
Chestnut is my favorite restaurant in Asheville. Staff is wonderful, ambience is great for anything between a romantic meal and a company dinner. They have a nice bar area. Portions are moderate (don't expect a trough of food like you get at a chain restaurant) , but I will take quality over quantity any day. For the quality you get, the prices are fairly moderate and worth it. Probably only costs about $30 more than dinner for 2 at Olive Garden. The menu changes regularly. Make SURE to save room for their desserts. The souffle is divine! I walk out of their feeling satisfied every time.
Food was outstanding but service left something to be desired - waitress clearly wanted us out of there (I guess 845 is last reservation?) and we felt very rushed and as if we were an inconvenience... kitchen had mystery 'problems with the souflee pans' (aka didn't feel like making any more despite us ordering as our main came out). Brought our dessert out before we even finished taking a breath after finishing main course. (Again, clearly wanted us gone)
Worth going for the outstanding food, just don't be the last reservation...
We enjoyed a really great meal here with friends the other night. Our waitress was extremely helpful and friendly. We ordered the mussels, fried green tomatoes and pork belly to start. Dinner 3 of us did the pork chop ( amazing) and one did the salmon. Everything was cooked perfectly we will definitely return
Kitchen was backed up, we were there an hour before our entrees arrived. The salad dressing had a strange taste. The fried catfish was overdone and everything on the plate was drizzled with a super sweet molasses which was overpowering. None of the four of us enjoyed the experience.
None of us had been to Chestnut before, but the lunch menu looked good and varied, so I selected it for a family gathering to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. We had a bit of trouble with the kitchen (my Mom didn't get the bacon she had asked to have added to her sandwich, and my niece didn't get the side order of grilled chicken she had requested), but they made things right before we left. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food very much. I know I did! Service was very friendly, and we had a lovely table where we could see out into the street and watch the folks passing by. Also, the restaurant gave my Mom a complimentary dessert for her birthday, which she very much enjoyed! A great experience all around.
Loved Chestnut! Nice ambiance as you move toward back of restaurant. Excellent bar selections and quality cuisine at reasonable prices. Service from Brianna was also excellent. We were able to have quiet conversation with our guests. Would definitely recommend!
Visiting with wife we stopped by on Monday December 26th for lunch. Lots of tourist so the place was crowded.
So glad we had a reservation with open table.
They sat us right away. The bar tender was our waiter and he never showed up. Manager eventually came over & apologized for the waiting. He took care of our orders from that point on. Lobster bisque was very good. The soup of the day was just okay (coconut squash cream soup). Had to ask for silverware to another waiter. Grilled chicken salad was good, greens were fresh. The flat iron steak my wife ordered was okay. They added A1 sauce to it which we don't like. The A1 sauce should be optional. That was disappointing. Interestingly the steak came with fries. I would have liked another side with it.
With so many good other restaurants in Asheville, we would definitely explore other places next time. Our experience was good but not the greatest.
Vacation in Asheville. I Read about it online and it sounded good. The waitress was so kind and attentive and fun. The food was outstanding and the idea of the medium plates is a great one. One of our best meals ever and with 2 cocktails and 2 glasses of wine total bill was $107!
I was very disappointed in our experience at Chestnut. It was my birthday and chose this place because of the excellent reviews. Our table was right by the host stand and bar- not quite what I was thinking for a romantic birthday dinner, but someone has to get sat at that table. Our server was never around and saw the food runners more than her, not ideal when you want to order drinks. I ordered 3 courses and were brought out back to back- we were served all 3 courses within 30 minutes... we weren't even done with our previous course before the next one was at our table. At one point my husband was still eating (chewing) and someone asked if they could take his plate. It made the dinner feel rushed and wasn't enjoyable. The food was ok, but was not impressed by the overall experience of dining here.
My daughter was visiting for the Christmas holidays and we wanted to eat dinner out before going to the Fine Arts Theater. Chestnut is one of my favorite restaurants as I love the kale and calamari appetizer and several of the usual dinners. I ordered trout and my daughter ordered salmon. I can't say the salmon was up to the usual standards but everything else was absolutely delicious!
It has been a few months since we ate at Chesnut.
We waited until there were fewer tourists in town and luckily could get a reservation on the same day that we requested one.
The service was excellent.
Since there were many holiday parties , the time between when we ordered and received our entrees was quite long.
It was worth the wait...food was excellent, especially the beet salad. The dressing on the lettuce that came with the beets was superb. Nice NOT to have salad that looks like it had been in a bag for weeks! My husband liked the french dip as well.
It was lovely holiday lunch with an old friend. I had a reservation and they took me promptly. Service was excellent, I am just sorry I do not remember his name, I think it was Taylor. He did not hover or rush us. But seem to check on us at just the right time. Food is consistently good. I really do love this restaurant.
We ate here prior to Candlelight tour at Biltmore. Due to an accident stopping traffic on I-26, we were 20 minutes late. I called ahead and they were very accommodating. Upon arrival, I informed the waitress that we had 8:00 tickets for Biltmore and needed to rush. She took GREAT care of us. Got our food in about 20 minutes and it was fabulous. Three of us had the salmon; one had the ribeye. The waitress was attentive and very conscientious. Though the seating is VERY close together and the noise level brisk, we very much enjoyed our "quick" dinner and will definitely be back. KUDOS to Chestnut.
Side note- there is a nearby parking garage that made life much easier- didn't have to "hunt" for a parking spot.
This is truly one of Asheville's best restaurant. We recommend it to tourists and locals as well.
From the welcome as you enter, to the thank you for dining with us and all in between, the service
is always great! Always a variety of choices to suit anyone's palette.
My only complaint was our table was right at the front door....small round table for 2. I wish I had asked for a better table but that was my fault, I will know next time. Food delicious but waiter acted a little rushed....really busy night. I would definitely go back.
