Cherry is a unique restaurant that offers Japanese dishes that have a heavy French influence for a completely new taste. Sake Sommelier Chris Johnson offers about 80 sake variations every night.
Explore new tastes with a Cherry signature dish, such as the tuna tart with creamy ponzu, red onion and white truffle oil or perhaps the almond shrimp with toasted almonds and sudachi vinaigrette or even the black cod shumai with squid, shrimp, black garlic and scallion. There are also soups and salads like cucumber and tomato, seaweed salad or warm mushroom salad to choose from. Other unique menu items include steak au poivre, grilled squid, fried chicken negimaki, along with innovative sushi and rolls.
We felt like we had found a secret place as we passed through the moon gate entry and descended the stairs into the restaurant. The room was cozy and elegant with a classy lounge like ambiance. It was decorated in deep reds and gold and every chair was super comfy.
We began with saki martinis with cucumber that were fresh and bracing.
Now for the food! We had the restaurant week meal and it was amazing. The appetizers were simple, classic Japanese fare: Miso Soup or salad. The miso soup was some of the best I have had.
The main dish was the star of the show: In addition to a choice between steak or sea bass the chef included several items: three kinds of sushi rolls, two types of sashimi and 2 crispy rice and tuna croquettes. Everything was wonderfully presented and tasted as good as it looked.
The desert was a warm bread pudding that was out of this world.
The waiters were friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We never needed to ask for water.
We are now hoping for a special occasion so we can come back and order off the regular menu!
Very good service and tasty food too. Went on restaurant week, the portion was just right. Bartender was very accommodating, I told him I wanted something spicy, and he put a little twist adding chilly to my cocktails and it was yummy

The tuna tart will ruin you for all other food. Nothing can compare. You will eat it, and you will wander the earth in a daze, wondering how you ever called all that other garbage you put in your face "food". The texture, the subtle way the flavors evolve in your mouth... life-changing. The rest is awesome too. The decor is fun, the seating is loungy, the lighting is perfect... but that tuna tart... that tuna tart....
We dined at Cherry on Saturday night. The service was very good and so were the cocktails! My husband had the fuji apple martini and I had the saketini. Both were delicious! For apps, we had the tuna tart, which was outstanding! and the yellowtail with jalapeno, which was good. For rolls, we had the red snapper and spicy tuna. It was the rolls that I found the fusion between French and Japanese most questionable. The use of well-made creamy sauces, which speaks to the French fusion aspect of the restaurant, masked all taste of the rolls. I could have been eating anything within those rolls and not been able to taste it except that the red snapper roll was quite dry in texture. We also had the cod shumai which is an interesting concept but the taste was lacking. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse. The French aspect to the restaurant shined through successfully with this course and the mousse was enjoyable.
Cherry offers a great menu of delectable dishes..from its Foie gras gyoza to their Tarte Tatin.
The appetizers were an original take on the classics and the sushi was of excellent quality. The music was at the right level to still be able to have a conversation on a Saturday night. The cocktails were quite good.
Katherine and all the servers were very hospitable and attentive.

The entire Cherry experience is fantastic. Each dish is a true masterpiece in taste, visual presentation and concept. Gorgeous ambiance. It's the real NYC deal.

I enjoyed the sushi very much and was prepared for poor service based on some of the reviews. The service was as exceptional as the sushi! I would definitely go back for good food, good service and cool place where you can actually have a conversation.

Great atmosphere and good eats...
This was my second visit. I had been there on a business dinner a year ago and wanted to come back. My fiancée and I had a friend visiting and decided to come.
The atmosphere is very cool, though it is not at all what you'd expect for a French-inspired Japanese restaurant. You climb down the stairs to find yourself in what look like and old British colonial lounge, with dark wood and plush red velvet.
On my first visit I remember being struck by the unique food preparations, and I was glad to see my memory was correct. they have a lot of tapas-size appetizers and dishes, so we started with the signature Tuna tarts - two thin, crisp round tarts with some sort of buttery truffle spread overlaid with thinly sliced tuna tartar. Yum! We rounded out the appetizers with black cod shumai and then decided to do the sashimi/sushi omakase. The quantity was reasonable for the price, the presentation was beautiful, and the fish quality was outstanding. Surprisingly (for me), one of my favorite pieces was a big-eye tuna that was out-of-this-world tender, with a rich, buttery flavor. I like to save my best for last, and decided to give that honor to the uni, which was a wise choice: from the lightness of it (both in terms of color and flavor), I am pretty sure it was from the Santa Barbara area - definitely not the heavier, east coast type.
We topped off dinner with desserts, sampling a full range that included the triple chocolate mousse, the green tea meltdown (spectacular - like a green tea lava cake with a small dollop of red bean ice cream) and the Suntory bread pudding, which was also delightful.
I should also mention that the place was a bit noisy - not a surprise it being Saturday night - but much less so than other restaurants in the meatpacking district. We were able to have conversations all evening without having to strain to hear each other. I suspect that the draperies, velvet furniture and carpeting all contributed.
In all, this was a delightful dinner!
We ordered 5 different small plates (appertizers) to share between the two of us. The crunchy salmon roll; tuna tacos; vegetable tempura; kanpaci were all very fresh, delicious and prepared in a unique way. I had a glass of prosecco since they ran out of plum wine, and my friend had a glass of the house sake. The staff is attentive. The tables and velvet seating were comfortable. My only complaint would be the dim lighting. We couldn't even appreciate the old portraits that lined the upper walls. Also, the 2 flights of carpeted stairs down to the restaurant are completely unexpected. In fact, the lights were off on the 2nd set of stairs which they fixed when I informed them about it. Overall, I would recommend this place for the good food and service.
The perfect dinner spot to bring your significant other on a dressy date night or your girlfriends on a GNO preclubbing. Awesome food, attentive service and amazing ambiance. Would dine here again
