What Insiders Are Saying
Cheri is a French spot in Harlem with a big back patio.
The food was good, unfortunately the service was terrible. The food took about 45 minutes between appettizer and the main without the waiter ever coming to our table to explain anything to us or ask us how we are doing. The table next to us, which arrived after us, was given a complementary sampler bc of the extended wait yet we were not offered the same complent. They even forgot one of our appetizers but did not become aware of it till the food runner gave us our mains. It was a leisure night and we're not that hungry and the ambiance was pleasant enough where we enjoyed ourselves regardless
A French restaurant with no notable champagne? Hmmmm...
Unacceptable! One of the worst NYC dining experience of my life. Please do me a favor and never go there. This establishment does not deserve to be serving food to anyone and should be closed.
A friend from Hawaii was in town for a few days and I was tasked with finding a restaurant. Being a French food lover, I did some research on new upcoming French restaurants and stumbled on the NYT article from Spring 2017 called Harlem’s French Renaissance where Cheri was features with great reviews. All the reviews online – both on Google and Opentable for Cheri were positive and I was extremely excited to try it out. Something must have happened to the owner/chef/management I the experience I had on Tuesday was nothing like the reviews.
However, we were let done from the moment we got there:
1.Welcome – Staff was unwelcoming, cold and not smiling. Not checking on us.
2.Empty – the restaurant was nearly empty on a Tuesday night for dinner. It should have been a red flag from the get go.
3.Food – nothing positive to say here. We first ordered appetizers – the burrata, which was bland, the duck pate and the chicken pate. The patés tasted like dog food and I couldn’t force myself to eat it. For the main dishes, I ordered the Tartare was which uneatable, with way too much pine nuts in the mix, way too oily and the potatoes were soaked in oil. As for the salad, it had no dressing and it not taste fresh. I felt my plate half full and felt sick.
4.Price ¬– Not only was the food terrible, but the prices were high. I felt robbed.
All around, this was a miserable experience. This restaurant should be shut down.
We chose Cheri after seeing good reviews about it and seeing that it got chosen as #1 in Harlem, although it is quite pricey. We ordered two main dishes recommended by the waitress. A mix American style plater and a toast. The plater was average and not worth the 23$, the toast was good.
Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but a good restaurant shouldn't have average food. Especially at this price range.
We probably won't go to Cheri again.
What an adorable neighborhood gem! The decor is uniquely romantic. The food was excellent, but the menu is a bit limited and they were out of one of the two fish dishes. Luckily, the one they did have was excellent.
THIS WAS A LOVELY FOOD AND AMBIENCE EXPERIENCE. HOWEVER, IT WAS MARRED BY THE VERY LONG WAIT FOR OUR MAIN DISH TO BE SERVED. WHEN MY LAMBURGER FINALLY CAME, WHILE IT WAS VERY DELICIOUS, IT WAS ROOM TEMPERATURE TO WARM AT BEST. THE WAITRESS WAS GRACIOUS AND LOVELY AND IT SEEMS AS IF THE DELAY WAS IN THE KITCHEN.
I CERTAINLY WILL RETURN.
Stylish without being pretentious; enough French classics to make one salivate for more on a return visit. The generous portion of saumon buerre blanc was a bit too rich for my taste but will surely delight most diners. Superb shredded duck pate that could still be spread on toast. Service was excellent and the noise level was manageable at 8-9 pm on a weekday. We also relished the challenge of reading the French aphorisms in the 'books' used to house the menus.
I love Cheri. We are regulars that live in the neighborhood and it is such a cozy place for us. Alain is a great host and the food is really good and right sized for us. The best part is that we can have a conversation without being drowned out by the noise/music etc that tend to be prevalent in most restaurants these days.
It was a very good experience. The owner and staff were very attentive and pleasant.
Cheri was recommended to me by someone I really didn't know well, but I decided to give it a try. It was delicious. All the doors were open, it's a very small space, and the A/C was not really working well and therefore it was a bit warm in the room. The food however, (the pate was a bid dry) was delicious and very well presented. We met the chef/owner and he was delightful. I will definitely try it for brunch as well. Try it, it's worth it, although not cheap.
A tremendous restaurant for any occasion, Cheri offered the perfect ambiance for my date. All of the staff were friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. The food was of high quality, elegant, and made with organic ingredients. Not complicated with excessive sauces, I would dine at Cheri every day of the week if I lived closer. A true reminder of French cuisine. Thank you for a wonderful night.
Food was really bland and not very "French". Pate for example seemed like canned food. Also the salmon mousse cucumber tasted kind of canned.
The place was a small and very cozy. The table setting is amazing. Wine list nice as was glass selection. The menu is ecletic. The salmon was great, desserts were also good
A welcoming quaint restaurant with charming features such as the hand painted table ware and the dinner menu placed in a French novel. The food was excellent and the service was friendly, informative and engaging.
I saw online that there was an enclosed terrace in the back. I chose the restaurant partially for that outdoor ambiance (besides hearing that the food was incredible) for my wife’s birthday. I didn’t hear back from the restaurant I the request and was disappointed to see that the back was either closed or under construction. Either way, it was blocked off. I would have greatly appreciated an email letting me know the request was not possible, though I question if that was intentional as I may have chosen a different restaurant had I known. Never-the-less, the food and service was outstanding. Ambiance inside was lacking.
Love it! Wonderful food and staff! The owner is s gem 👍
Service and food was great but it was the hottest day of the year and there was no A/C and somewhat uncomfortable to dine. There were fans going but the heat took away from the dining experience and service.
Loved the food, service was great. There’s one server and one bar tender working the whole room but our service was very kind and very on top of everything. Nice and intimate spot. Definitely am going to have Brunch there again.
Wonderful service and well prepared food. Perfect for a calm dinner and drink.
I would recommend the cold soup and the sole.
The point that affected my review the most was the hostess who was also the waitress. Her lack of attention to detail on more than one occasion was disappointing.
The restaurant as no air-conditioning. The garden is closed for service but the door is open with simple fans to create airflow. I requested the table at the garden door but was declined as it was a 3 seater and we were a couple. I would be ok with that if they had reservations or it was a busy night, but it was a week day and they had only 4 tables the entire evening.
We were handed the cheque without being asked for it. Had that not happened, we would have easily ordered another round of drinks.
I also noticed the way she treated her colleague at the bar, rather impolite. Even if it was with reason, this behaviour should not be displayed in front of guests.
Cheri is the best spot for brunch in Harlem, by far.
Absolutely amazing experience! The ambience is the perfect combination of chic, cultural, and fabulous! The food is incredible! So much so that I came two days straight! Brunch was delectable! Don’t forget to try the potatoes with Gorgonzola! This place makes me smile!
I love this place so much. Unlimited mimosas before twelve plus ridiculously delicious food. Such a gem. Best brunch spot in Manhattan!
I really enjoyed the dinner. The food was very good and the staff is very friendly.
great spot loved the vibe and the menu here would come back
The food and ambience were good, but the service left something to be desired, in that the waiter did not let us know what was not available on the menu until I tried to order it, only to be told that I couldn’t, twice, and was quite slow in attending to us. The check at first showed the coffee & tea we had cancelled and when we asked to split it, the tax was charged three tines. Fortunately we noticed.
Conclusion: the service, while pleasant , needs to be more attentive to detail. A shame, as it is a cute restaurant with good food. It could also do without the large, silent television screen which is not in keeping with the rest of the decor and atmosphere
Delightful as always. Love the decor, the setting, the relaxed and interesting vibe. Love that menus are inside books, the music is just right, the staff gracious and knowledgeable. And the food is fresh, locally sourced, and artfully prepared without pretense or heavy handedness. I feel like Goldilocks. Everything here is 'just right'
Lovely spot, delicious fresh homemade food, kind and warm staff, organic!
Nice dining experience. Went there for Mother’s Day and the ambiance reminded me of a living room. Really great. Place is small on the inside. The staff were attentive and food was great.
The atmosphere is excellent, and food is wonderful.
Authentic French menu with delicious vegan options! Most unusual and welcome.
Friendly, fun and helpful staff, beautiful garden seating.
This was our first time here. One of the best restaurant experiences we had in a while.
Pros: Wonderful, intimate and elegant atmosphere.
Beautifully set tables, you feel like you are in the king's castle.
Food was delicious, big portions, very fresh and tasty.
Very friendly and attentive staff, except for one.
Very friendly and cute chef who went around asking how did guests like the food.
Great value for the food. We are good cooks, foodies, and we absolutely loved everything we ordered.
Low music and mostly low noise level for Saturday night. We were able to have a conversation.
Cons: There was no live music as advertised. We were told that they have live music only when the garden is open.
Too many people attending to one table, which is a little bit annoying and kept interrupting our conversation. There was a mistake in the order, they apologized and brought the right dish, but the mistake wasn't fixed on the receipt. This was only due to several people taking care of us. I would recommend one single server, it's more personable and it avoids confusion.
There was a lady that seated us and she kept coming back every five minutes, interruption us in the middle of a conversation and asking if we need anything else, if we are ready, etc. For desserts, we told her we need 10 minutes to digest all the great food we ate, but she kept coming back and kind of got annoyed when for the 4th time we told her we were not ready. The restaurant is small and we know how to call the waiter. I used to wait tables, and you NEVER interrupt the conversation, you stand at the table for a couple of seconds and guests will stop talking so that you can ask them if they need anything.
These are minor complaints. We were very happy and we will be back.
Love the ambience and French cuisine. It was our 1st visit and definitely plan on returning. Kudos to Chef Alain for the classy, clean, and inviting décor and the upbeat mood at this welcoming restaurant! We didn't have dessert, but thoroughly enjoyed the wine, appetizers, dinner rolls, and main courses. Definitely worth the trip on a Thursday evening.
This is a lovely neighborhood gem. Although I live in queens. Definitely will make a point of coming back again.
Celebrated a birthday and this place definitely impressed us. Food was amazingly good and perfect portions. It was like being in Paris. I will be visiting again very soon!
Two of us shared appetizers and a salad before a 10pm show at nearby Bill's Place. It was the perfect pre-show meal. The service was pleasant, prompt, and professional. The appetizers and especially the salad surpassed our expectations! Will definitely come again before a show.
MO, Was great. Excellent service topped by superb food. An elegant evening.
Very intimate French dining at a delightful iconic Harlem venue. It was our daughter’s birthday and she really enjoyed the occasion.
Cheri is a lovely brunch location.
My husband and friends love the food, the ambiance, and the staff.
Really cute restaurant, and the garden is lovely even in the winter.
The only negative is the bathroom which is painted black. A little dark and scary.
Otherwise, amazing. I have been more than 5 times. Never disappointed
