We love Chef Melba’s! It is the best in the South Bay of LA!
Chef Melba’s is my go to restaurant in the South Bay! The food and service is excellent! I’ve had dinner dates with the wife, business meetings and events held here and the food is always amazing! Thank you Melba and Jon for the fabulous service and delicious meals!
Chef Melba’s is a gem. It’s a treat to see Chef Melba cooking; she always has a smile and a wave. She truly loves what she is doing and it shows in the fresh, delicious dishes.
The restaurant is small and get loud when filled, as it usually is, but overall, it’s not too extreme.
Our server last night seemed extremely tense and complained-bragged about how this was his third job of the day. He was training another server who seemed nervous to be working with him. Too bad, because ther personnel at Melba’s has always been upbeat and helpful line Melba. Maybe an off night for our server.
My partner had the cioppino and it was delicious! I had capellini and clams and also wonderful. Both had a delicious broth unique to each dish. Each was absolutely loaded with seafood. You won’t be disappointed at Melba’s.
Fantastic food, beautifully prepared, and Chef Melba is so warm and welcoming!
My wife and I went to Chef Melba's for our first dinner out after moving to Hermosa Beach. The food was fantastic and they took great care of us! Made us both feel part of the family there.
Excellent restaurant in the “old style”. A great personable chef, an interesting seasonal menu with top quality sourcing, professional and knowledgeable wait staff and most amazingly, one may dine at one’s leisure and actually have dinner conversation without an ear-splitting noise level.
I decided to come back and try Chef Melbas for a second time this week! Just like the first time I walked in and John the European waiter was there to greet me. I had the Persian salad which was fabulous. The flavors were immaculate! For my entree I had the rib eye steak with cognac bordaise and chantrale mushroom sauce. I made sure to thank the chef again for such a wonderful meal. Thank you chef!
Hidden jem in Hermosa Beach. The place is cozy but the menu is creative and fresh. We shared the crispy oysters for an appetizer—it was lightly breaded and crunchy. My husband had the sea bass and I had the coconut broth dish. Everything was flavorful and the portions were just enough. Looking forward to visiting Chef Melba’s next time we’re in the South Bay.
Fabulous dinner. Was there with 4 girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. We had apps and dinner and two desserts.
The Thai coconut broth was to die for. Huge prawns, calimari, scallops and fish in a beautiful, rich comforting coconut broth.
One friend had the steak special which was just as yummy, and another had sole, and another a prawn/scallops special.
All were amazing, great portions and full of surprising flavor. At the end of the night Chef Melba came out to y’all to us, for quite a while, so it felt like we were in her home. She clearly loves what she does and takes so Much pride. And it shows. Will definitely go back! Thank you chef!
I was so disappointed that I didn’t try this place sooner!! All 4 of of us walked in as newbies and couldn’t get over how incredible our dishes were!! Absolutely a must!! Hermosa is lucky to have such a gem!
A definite go to dinner location in Hermosa Beach! The food is excellent and prepared upon order. The service is on point, the wine selection is great and desserts are delicious. It’s by far our favorite restaurant in the South Bay!
I recently just moved from Malibu to Hermosa Beach a couple weeks ago and my wife and I decided to try this hidden gem, since many of our close friends who live in the South Bay have recommended it. We were welcomed immediately by chef Melba and were sat by the window on the left hand side of the restaurant. To start off, our waiter John recommended a nice bottle of Crystal champagne which was fairly priced compared to other restaurants in Malibu. Since I’m a huge fan of octopus, we started off with that, followed by the eggplant board which I thought was very unique. The octopus was tender and had a lot of flavor. As for the eggplant board, the dressing was fabulous and I loved the grilled pears and beets! Next, my wife and I had the specials which were the Chilean sea bass and the rib eye steak with jumbo prawns on top. Wow! The presentation was impressive and the flavours were all there! Usually we both take our foods home but this time we ate it all! It also went well with our champagne, thanks John! Lastly, we shared a chocolate bag with passion fruit mousse and berries on top, definitely now one of my favorite deserts! We will definitely be back again next week since we talked to the chef and she mentioned that she changes the menu regularly and I would love to come and enjoy this food again. Thank you chef Melba, we will be back!
Had a wonderful meal at Chef Melba’s Bistro! The food and service were top notch and I would recommend for any occasion. Jan our server was very knowledgeable about both the food and wine and helped make the evening special. If you love seafood you will be in heaven but there were plenty of other delicious options for everyone. Don’t miss an opportunity to dine here!
I gave 1 star for service only, as I did not eat (I was required to fill out stars for all categories). Waited over 40 minutes without being seated or provided with an update. There is also not a bar while waiting on your table. I talked to 3 other parties that had the same reservation time that checked in after us, but were seated before us.
We arrived about 10 minutes prior to or reserved time, and ended up waiting about 1/2 hour in the cold for our table despite there being several tables open. They were short staffed.
The bread they served was nothing special, barely toasted and flavorless with nothing to dip it in. Even olive oil would have helped.
I ordered a fish type stew. The sauce was watery and lacked depth of flavor. Had it been thicker and more savory, with more depth of flavor, it would have been great.
Food was outstanding, cooked to perfection and not over salted. It was a very busy new year's eve with a full house. Service was professional and friendly. Very nice menu. We will be back.
Unexperienced staff? Very rushed and unsophisticated service, basically took our plates off the table before we were finished. Didn’t know anything about wine at all. The food good, but not outstanding at all. Very, very overpriced and therefore poor value for money.
It is always a joy to eat at Chef Melba's! The food is delicious and Chef Melba is welcoming and warm. It is truly a neighborhood gem and does not disappoint. Her seafood dishes are fabulous!
Chef Melba’s never disappoints. We come here often for special occasions and each meal has been better than the last. Highly recommend!
Every time we go to Hermosa beach we make reservations at Chef Melbas. It is the best food in the area, the best service and the kindest people. Chef Melba is a treasure.
As a first time customer at the restaurant I was very pleased with the service at Chef Melba’s Bistro. I would also like to say that the food was phenomenal! As an appetizer I had the Blazing Mushroom which were out of this world, having so much complex flavors that is a must to order. My fiancé had the Grilled Octopus cooked to perfection, our waiter Jon recommended Pinot Grigio that paired excellently with the appetizers. We then moved on to sharing the Grilled Eggplant Salad and for our main dish my fiancé had Lamb Shank, it fell off the bone, tender, and savory. I decided to order the Chilean Seabass, that melted in my mouth like butter. Our server Jon recommended a bottle Papillon Red Wine that was amazing. At this point we were blown away by the service and outstanding food. At the end of our meal we shared Chef Melba’s Signature Chocolate Box, with Lavazza Italian Coffee Jon the waiter recommended. Last but not least we shared a glass of 20 year old port. To top it off as being her first customers of the day the owner Chef Melba Came and checked on our table. After such a great experience, we will be sure to come back during Valentines for her special seasonal menu.
Lovely intimate restaurant right off Hermosa beach. Service was terrific and the food very good.
Food was amazing. They need one more server to keep up with the volume, but our server was really nice. Just too many tables. Other than that, highly recommended!
As always Chef Melba did not disappoint. Appetizers the burrata and the Tuna were great. Carolyn’s salmon special was perfect. Jay and Nico had the lamb shank which was savory and delicious. Karen had the sea bass. All were perfectly prepared as usual. Service by John was great as was the wine selection. A great time.
We have always loved Chef Melba’s since we moved to the area 10 years ago. Her food is delicious, always fresh and creative, the ambiance is romantic, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Tonight John was very attentive and delightful. My husband had the ciopino which looked amazing, I had the lamb shank which was perfectly prepared and we shared the grilled octopus (amazing) and the tomato salad (also amazing) all followed by desert which involved the chocolate box (yummy) and a special birthday desert for my husband. A great way to celebrate my husbands birthday.
Chef Melba prepares some of the finest food available anywhere. From the first delicious bite which sets the tone for the meal, to the outstanding service, the evening is fantastic. A truly great dining experience.
My husband and I have eaten regularly at Chef Melba’s since she opened fourteen years ago. We normally eat here on weekdays when it is less crowded and Chef Melba has time to chat with us. We have always had delicious meals and wonderful experiences. She is always eager to explain her new creations that we can try for the first time. This is our main go to restaurant in the South Bay.
Last night we thoroughly enjoyed the Smoked Salmon appetizer. We were so hungry, we ordered a second appetizer, the Peruvian Bay Scallops and they were also fabulous. Our entrees this evening were two specials of the evening: Seared Ahi Tuna over Mango/Cucumber and Striped Sea Bass with Coarse Mustard/Lemon Sauce with Spinach/Basmati Rice. Yummy! Our dessert was Chef’s signature Chocolate Bag, which is truly wonderful.
We look forward to our next visit.
Spectacular meal as always! You can never go wrong with the Branzino which is exquisite! It has A yummy Meyer lemon sauce with a hint of ginger which is great with a glass of wine of Bella Union Cabernet. As for the service, The European server Jan, was very professional and knew the menu like the back of his hand. He recommended a wonderful wine for my meal which I appreciated very much since I generally only drink full body red wines. Nevertheless, the chocolate bag for dessert is to die for! I will definitely be back ringing in the new year with my coworkers and Chef Melba of course!
Always special. Personal. Homemade. Cozy. Fun
outstanding! We always have a great meal! We come here every year for our anniversary.
Very tasty food and wonderful service with a personal touch. Our waiter John was genuinely attentive and had a great sense of humor. We even had the pleasure of meeting Chef Melba. Couldn't have asked for a better dining experience. =)
Chef Melba is the best in all respects! High quality food the best preparation and wonderful service!
Cheb Melba's Bistro is absolutely on of the best fine dining restaurants I have visited.
Great ambiance, Jan, the server, took a great care of me and made my stay enjoyable.
I had ahi tuna poke salad and butterfish. Both dishes were delicious and I can honestly say I will be back for more. Chef Melba herself came by and checked on me as I was enjoying the dishes. She is such a wonderful chef and person!
Great wine and dessert selection, you should definitely try the chocolate box, the filling is out of this world.
Thank you guys for a great night!
A terrific neighborhood gem, hidden in plain sight! The food is fresh, seasonal, and lovingly prepared. We’ve been there twice and everything has been delicious! The warm, roasted eggplant appetizer with pear, soft cheese and salad is generous and perfect to share. The grilled sea bass was complimented by a fresh cranberry relish and served over perfectly cooked root vegetables.
The lighting is subdued, and patrons can enjoy watching Chef Melba prepare their food. Our waiter, John, was very attentive. Chef Melba stopped by our table both times to make sure everything was perfect.
We also learned there’s no corkage charge on Sunday evenings. So, bring out that wine you’ve been saving for a special occasion and celebrate a wonderful evening in Hermosa Beach!
Saturday night and ONE server. Ouch. No wonder sometimes he’s grouchy. Tough job.
Another woman, a seating hostess, was very nice and seemed like she was trying to help but she seemed to just be getting in the server’s way and irritating him.
Food was delicious, love this place so much. First time I encountered the service situation people complain about on yelp.
Excellent service and food choices were wonderful.
We dined here for the first time this past weekend for my husband's birthday, and we will be back again very soon! The food & service are excellent. Portions are very generous too. We love that this is a smaller restaurant with a cozy, neighborhood feel. The chef even made a point to come say 'hi' to all of the tables. We can't wait for our next visit!
The food is exceptional and the pairing of the wines is wonderful! Thanks
The food was really good. The restaurant is small so is noisy.
