My wife and I have celebrated my birthday at Chef Mavro for the past 15 years. The ambiance is quaint and the service was exquisite. The new 9 course dinner was a surprise but of the course the playing and taste of each dish was superb.
Birthday dinner, 9 course chef’s tasting menu, excellence all around. Would highly recommend, especially for special occasions!
Excellent hospitality, service. Food was well presented, innovative blending of flavors to enhance food.
Always an exquisite time at Mavro's. Never disappoints. Our go to restaurant for special occasions. Wife's favorite. Mahalo Chef Mavro and staff.
Disappointed that only one of each large fish and meat dishes
The best ‘price is no object’ restaurant in Hawaii!
Small portions French entrees, using locally sourced ingredients as much as possible.
After looking at the menu we agreed to do the wine pairing, so we booked an uber, and made our way over. The exterior is so unassuming, I immediately thought of Gary Danko's in SF. I had very high expectations. We went inside and it was also simply dressed, with what looked to be Murano glass as accents but otherwise neutral colors and décor. We were seated immediately and I noticed there were only three other tables occupied in the whole place.
We chose the Tasting Menu, which was very impressive on paper. We had customized menus with our names on them which was nice, and they offered to start us with some champagne which was one of the best things I had all night. We were also given the option of adding truffles or truffle risotto to our menu but we decided against it because we had a lot of truffle at VCC.
Service was good, timely, attentive and informative. Best part of the evening was talking with the sommelier Willy/Billy, and him testing us on some upcoming wines from Lebanon. Definitely the highlight of our dining experience.
Biggest downside was that despite only having 4 tables occupied, and us specifically saying we'd like to thank Chef Mavro, the Chef literally made personal greetings to every table BUT ours. I was completely taken aback by this. Our server said "oh he's an older gentleman, and his wife usually makes sure he says hi to everyone...so I guess you will just have to come back and say hi next time." Unbelievable.
Food was good, service was good, wine pairing was INCREDIBLE, but I can't overlook the massive feeling of being ignored in the Chef's presence. At $370 for food, $50 for two glasses of champagne, and $164 for the wine pairings, I would hope the chef would take 5 seconds to just say hello. Especially if only 4 tables have people at them. This somewhat minor thing to them was a major thing to us, and left us with a bitter aftertaste. Otherwise this would have been an overall rather enjoyable evening...shame.
For my wife’s pre birthday dinner.
Chef Mavro is our go to super occasion dinner restaurant. Being formally from NYC and heavily into the food and wine scene( for thirty years we taught Wine programs in Manhattan ) we feel that we have an idea what a great restaurant is all about. We’ve been living on Oahu for over six years. What makes Chef Mavro so very special to us is his ability to Change. What was six years ago a fine dining establishment with classic appointments has become a restaurant where you will feel excited and amazed at every dish presented to you. Now you will see many eye drops of liquid gold. Asian flavors mixed with French and Hawaiian beauty. The waitstaff knows every essence of what’s on your plate. We had so much fun learning about the bizarre and unusual spices, fruits and other ingredients that made up each of our dishes. In the past you had to pick one of the two menus. They are still there but now you can create your own menu. There are some awesome choices from their small wine list. With our Truffle Risotto we opted for one of the best Barbaresco’s we’ve ever had. And we’ve had many. Their new sommelier is a true wine enthusiast. No overflowing egos here. A true lover of wine. The following is a list what we had for this special occasion.
Peterson Farm Egg( we ordered 2!)
yukon potato, san danielle prosciutto, poutargue
Day-Boat Snapper Bourride( a true Bouillabaise with all the trimmings. Smelled it before it got to our table)
fennel, onion, tomato, aïoli
tamarind broth, long rice, pork belly, kaffir lime, green papaya, crustacean essence
Food is okay. Portions are small for sure. Main course was not cooked properly. Biggest issue was trickery by the waiter at attempting to serve me a wine by glass which was different from the menu and what I had ordered. He acted as if it was what I had ordered.
We visited Chef Mavro's restaurant while in Honolulu for my husband's birthday. While the bill was the most I've ever paid for a gourmet dinner, I can definitely say that it was a one-of-a-kind experience with impeccably prepared, imaginative food. My husband opted for the wine pairings, which accompanied the 9 course tasting menu we selected in advance. Each wine was delicious and paired beautifully with it's corresponding course. Each course was an artistic, delectable creation beginning with the cauliflower and crispy puffed rice amuse bouche, and culminating with an array of artfully prepared desserts. It was a dining experience we will never forget!
An awesome choice for innovative Hawaiian cuisine. In this case using classical French dishes to reinterpreted, and often invigorated, by local Hawaiian ingredients. The tasting menu was exceptionally fulfilling, and the wine pairings were on point. Highly recommended.
This was our first time at Chef Mavro and we really enjoyed the overall dining experience. We were celebrating a belated Valentine’s Day and opted for the five-course “romance” menu and accompanying wine flights. Without going into detail overload, the room is nice (not sure why there was no music for added ambience), the food was beautifully presented and tasty, but the service was uneven. Our waiter didn’t offer a pre-dinner cocktail and seemed in a hurry for us to order all 5-courses ASAP. A little “cruise ship” for our taste, but beyond that, we were pleased and we’ll try it again.
Food portion was small, food quality was alright. Big eaters don’t go here, you will be disappointed. I wanted to walk to jack in the box afterwards. I think it’s way too over priced. That’s how I felt about this place. Would I go back? Nope.
Amazing quality, service, presentation and ambiance.
Very special. 20th anniversary and we were treated like royalty. VERY expensive but so worth it... highly recommend a special occasion at Chef Mavro's... Thank you Chef Mavro for the special meal!
Our dining experience at Chef Mavro was exceptional from the beginning to the end. The special Valentine's Day seven course dinner was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff took care of every detail and provided excellent service throughout the evening. I would highly recommend Chef Mavro to anyone in search of an exceptional dinner experience that is second to none!
Great place to go for a special occasion!
The food was amazing! We did the 9-course tasting menu, and, even though the portions seemed small, we left feeling very full! The foie gras, the egg osmose, and the wagyu steak were outstanding!
I was celebrating my birthday, so they even brought out a special dessert for me to celebrate.
The small a la carte plates were wonderful, each delicious and different.
My frineds from Japan were very happy. Thank you
Worth every penny. We had the Grand tasting menu, with added truffle risotto. From the very first dish, we could not believe the quality and complexity of flavour. We would recommend to anyone going to Honolulu.
This is THE place to go and create memories, we were there several years back and we were back for our anniversary two weeks ago. Each visit meet and go beyond our expectation. We opt for the tasting menu and it was superb, you never know food can taste so good! The ambience is good, we got a private corner all to ourselves, and the service is attentive and personable.
They even have our names print on the menu for us to take home! There were two servers waiting on us throughout the courses, explaining in details about each course and introduce the wine pairing to each course. You feel like you are being spoiled throughout the evening.
Absolutely the best food and wine pairing in Hawaii. I'm always impressed with everything om the menu.
We tried 9 dish course menue. all dishes were very delicate and tasty.I especially enjoyed their signature dish with ann egg. They were flexible with changing to pescatarian dishes as I don't eat meat. I recommend with very special occasion to dine there.
Truly amazing. They small plate menu is a great idea and we thoroughly enjoyed the Onaga, truffle risotto, and the special malasada dessert made special for us. Worth the money!
Amazing experience with flawless food taste and presentations. We picked the tasting menu and everything we taste are so spectacular. We definitely are surprised and delighted. The only thing is it lasted for 3.5 hours long. Though I understand why we need space to refresh for every meal, but for us with kids it ended really late.
Well intentioned but not prepared for Christmas Eve. The tasting menu sent ahead of time was altered from the one provided at the table. The 6 courses took 3.5 hours to serve even though we arrived promptly for our table, as instructed by restaurant so as not to disrupt their flow. The first course took 45 Minutes after we were seated. Remaining courses came out irregularly. Servers seemed confused. A couple items were stellar, fish course and dessert, but goat cheese was frozen in the middle and chicken dish was blah.
Not happy. Menu was fixed and wouldn’t allow substitutes. We were rushed through dinner so the next seating could get our table. Different courses were at different quality and interest. Presentation was good; but for the price ($800 for 4) the dinner should have been spectacular. It wasn’t.
We did the tasting menu offered by this restaurant. While each of the dishes was unique and really perfectly crafted in every other way, temperature of several of the nine courses was not quite right. While this would be a significant challenge for the small portions offered on the menu, the fact that several courses were just warm (one hot dish even included elements that were cold to the touch) took away from the experience. At this price level expectations are appropriately high - and our experience with the restaurant fell a bit short.
We came back to Chef Mavro because of a really good experience many years ago. I was so impressed then they had a full vegetarian menu and the food was really good. But that was then, and this is now - I did not enjoy the experience this time. The place or concept has changed; you either have the choice of small plates in one dining room or a nine course tasting menu ($ 185 each plus about another $ 85 for wine pairings) in another room. You must review the menu in advance and decide.
We opted for the small plates and the operative word is SMALL. I get the concept of small plates and tastings, but this is silly. The goat cheese was literally the size of a large marble with some strawberry jam - two very dainty bites. The overly salty house-made tofu was a thin slice with a little bit of fruit. My partner, who is not a vegetarian, also experienced the tininess of the portions, but did really enjoy the three or so bites of Wagyu beef ($50!!). The other annoying thing was the pushiness of the server wanting us to order a special truffle risotto or to add shaved truffles to other dishes ($35 extra).
Truly the best part of the evening was returning hungry to our room at the Halekulani and having an outstanding and elegantly served room service dinner on our lanai. Without Chef Mavro we probably would never have had that great experience.
P.S. One odd thing; received an email that the restaurant cancelled our Open Table reservation just a few minutes before we arrived
Haven't been to mavro in awhile(trying new places), but surprised at new menu. Food profile great and each dish layered with combinations that are new and exciting. tasting menu great and will be going back soon. The chicken dish was a great surprise so moist and flavorful and additions of the vegetable tartlet was great.
My wife and I have been to Chef Mavro now six times over the years on our visits to Honolulu.
The tasting menu remains among the finest dining experiences the two of us have ever had. The food is delicious, creative and unique; the wine pairings are always perfect.
This year Chef Mavro himself visited our table and spoke with us for an extended period of time during which we were able to express our appreciation for the meals he has prepared for us.
Dinner is expensive at Chef Mavro, but is a good value based on the dining experience the restaurant provides. When in Honolulu, do all you can to include Chef Mavro among your stops.
Thank you so much for such a fabulous meal! We added the Onaga and it was served table side by chef mavro himself! That was especially wonderful. The most amazing fish we've had in our lives. The wagyu was incredible and something I cannot describe in words. Desserts were something we've never had in our lives, the blend of ingredients...harmonious! Everything was so excellent from from start to finish. We were all so very impressed. Thank you so much for the delicious meal and warm service!
Overall, this was a fabulous dining experience. Service was personable and friendly while giving up nothing in attentiveness and professionalism. The food was exquisite, although if you are into large portions go elsewhere. I much prefer quality over quantity and the food at Chef Mavro definitely was of the highest quality. The room was quiet and comfortable as well, so for service, ambience and food this restaurant gets my vote!
The food was nothing special and the price was quit high. Many other better options in Honolulu for the money
We're from Texas and whenever we are in town, we always have to go to Chef Mavro. The food is always stellar and so creative. I love Chef Mavro's creativity with his dishes. It is amazing how he pairs interesting fruits or spices or rare vegetables and are able to pair it with meats, chicken or fish dishes. The ambience is nice and quiet. We hate loud restaurants. The service is always impeccable.
Amazing food ... we're on their email list so we got notification of a Fall Flavors menu that we were intrigued with. Some friends wanted to get together and so we suggested this place. They loved the food as much as we did. They ordered one of their signature dishes that I've uploaded a photo of with the Chef Mavro serving.
We always love it here and plan on returning!
Chev Mavro is one of our favorite restaurants. We have been customers there for the last 7 years. It is truly a dining experience with exquisite dishes that combine original presentation with combinations of flavors that make your mouth smile. Wine pairings add more pleasure to the palate. Service is always attentive and friendly. We will continue to return.
This dining experience was exceptional. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. Service perfection.
Chef Mavro is a genius with a generous heart, and it shows in his food. Beautifully creative dishes, fun takes on local ingredients and flavors, and the ability to accommodate weird palates. We had amazing fun, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Honolulu's first-rate modernist cuisine, fine dining locale, capitalizing on local ingredients where available, bringing in special ingredients to enhance local offerings. The food lives up to expectations. If one is familiar with this kind of restaurant in other cities, the service may seem a bit intrusive, explaining more than necessary, but I wouldn't fault them for it, this being the only restaurant of its type on O'ahu. Best dish of the night: foie gras torchon with cocoa nibs and black sesame mini-malasadas. Save room for dessert.
