Charlie Gitto's 'On the Hill' Ratings and Reviews
We took our daughter-in-law out for a special birthday dinner. We were greeted and welcomed immediately at the door and shown to our table. The atmosphere was quiet and sophisticated. Our server recommended good wine to our taste and had a thorough knowledge of the menu. We were unobtrusively tended to, keeping our water filled, drinks refilled and just enough attention to ensure that our food was perfect. The steak melted in our mouths, salads crunchy and full of fresh ingredients; the calamari appetizer was entree sized, crispy, flavorful--delicious. I only wish we could have been seated in an area with a little less traffic. Other than that, a great evening. Happy to recommend!
We had a party of 6, we were seated quickly, the table was comfortable, and the food was very delicious. The red sauce is amazing, the mushroom ravioli was excellent and the desserts were all wonderful, and very authentic. The cannoli was the best ! Our server was very knowledgeable and recommended a great bottle of wine the was reasonably priced. We had a great time, and will be back if we made it back to St. Louis.
We had 4 of us go for a birthday dinner. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like VIP’s. My wife was wished happy birthday by at least 3 workers before we left.
The four of us enjoyed our meal. We had toasted ravioli, French onion soup(I think that’s what it was... It was gone before I could ask what it was), steak, shrimp pasta, and the veal.Honestly, I think I was most impressed with the spinach salad. I don’t like spinach and I really liked the salad(wife ordered it for me). Don’t get me wrong, we all said it was the best meal we have had in a long time. Just amazing.
We will be back, sooner than later!
Another great night at Charlie Gitto's. We were seated at a comfortable table near the bar but still able to have a quiet conversation throughout the evening. Warm, personal, enjoyable service from Don. Very knowledgeable about menu selections available. Ordered a glass of wine and was offered a taste of two to decide which was more to my taste. The lobster bisque was a perfect start for dinner - extremely rich and creamy with wonderful flavor. The seafood risotto was superb, my dining partner praised it a number of times. The veal parmesan was a LARGE portion perfectly prepared.
Charlie Gitto's On the Hill restaurant is a very lovely building. The service was exceptional. Unfortunately the prices are very high and the food quality did not come close to what I expected for the price paid. For example, I had one of their popular chicken dinners and rather than being a plump, tender chicken breast I was served two flattened pieces of chicken that looked and tasted like they came from a box of frozen chicken sold for quick lunches by your local grocery store. I will never be returning.
Definitely not my best experience at Charlie Gitto's and regretted taking our out of town visitor there for dinner. Our server was friendly and the service was fast, but the people clearing tables interrupted us twice to ask to box up our food while we had utensils in our hands. It felt very rushed. We had raved to our visitor about the toasted ravioli St. Louis is known for, yet it came out overcooked and dry. The gnocchi was undercooked and still had a raw flour taste. I'm not sure if we hit a bad night or if this is how it is now at Charlie Gitto's, but will be hesitant to return anytime soon. The rushed feeling of trying to take our plates that we'd only had for 10 minutes was really off-putting.
We are recent transplants to STL and hear d of Charlie Gitto's via an online article that rated it best Italian in Missouri. The place was buzzing. We were seated right away with our Open Table reservation. The ambiance is great, New York-style. Our waiter was friendly and knew the wine list well. I recommend the calamari fritti with beans and banana peppers as well as the lobster ravioli. The desserts are made in-house. They have a wonderful selection and the chocolate cake was divine. The bread was served without butter. When we requested butter or oil we were offered a garlic butter dip which later showed up on our bill for $5. The specials of the evening were not offered to us, but we overheard our waiter offering them to the table behind us. Overall the experience was very good. They have a rewards program for those interested and live music on the patio.
