Charlie Gitto's 'On the Hill' Ratings and Reviews
Would have been 5 stars on Overall but our waiter lacked a lot in the friendliness category. We were unfortunately not dressed the absolute best as we were just stopping in St. Louis for the night on a road trip and had dinner at Charlie Gitto's at the recommendation from a friend. The waiter seemed to "pre-judge" us and wasn't very friendly and ended up rushing us through our meal. We normally like to spend an ~hour and a half with a nice meal, enjoying the courses, and having three rounds of drinks. We were in and out of Charlie Gitto's in 53 minutes, including appetizers and drinks. We felt rushed and the waiter didn't so much as smile.
The hostesses were outstanding and accommodating, the food INCREDIBLE, the wine list had a great selection of new and old world wines and the drinks were on point. We just wish we had a little more time to enjoy the meal.
Old fashioned red sauce Italian place but weird combinations and overly complex dishes. The eggplant Napoleon was very odd - crunchy eggplant layered with too many flavors. Nice fresh pasta in my linguine w clams - but I’ve never seen it prepared w chunks of tomato. Server was pleasant but unctuous, perhaps because I was eating alone. Would not go back, sadly.
We love Charlie G’s. Our waiter Tomas was great! The breaded Calimari was better than I have had anywhere else (including Hawaii). My wife and I had filet, lamb, and shrimp and each was excellent. We finished it off with exceptional cannolis. Charlie Gittos is a must for fine dining in STL
We were seated promptly in a nice booth when we arrived for our 6pm reservation on a busy Saturday. This was a special celebration for us ( our 45th anniversary) and the food and service both made for a very memorable evening. Our server (Nick) was attentive and friendly and the assistant wait staff were very efficient. We splurged on an appetizer, salad, two pastas, and desserts and everything was delicious! The servings were so plentiful that we enjoyed another scrumptious dinner at home the following evening.
Another wonderful meal. They are so gracious about my GERD. I give them the “No” list of seasonings and a couple of options for the meal. Then, the waiter talks to Chef and let’s me know what can be changed. Never have they made me feel that they wished I had not come in. Not many places are like that.
It was a great experience. Our waiter was extremely nice and extremely helpful (paid with gift card and debit card, I was confused and he helped me oh so much!) The staff here is incredibly courteous. They never yelled across the restaurant for know another. It was quiet and well organized. We ended up sitting by the kitchen which made it a bit louder than anywhere else, but other than that the experience was phenomenal. And the food even better. The best Italian food I have ever had in my life!
Took my girlfriend to Charlie's for her birthday and was told over the phone by the host that they would do something special for her. I also wrote a request when making the reservation to see if they would do anything just to make sure. Sure enough, we ate, got the bill, left.... and nothing happened for her birthday.
Overall the food and service was good, but I was just a little disappointed after going there for a special occasion.
Better hope you get a waiter other than “Tomas”....he will talk your ear off with his New Jersey accent, and mainly about himself. Everyone else is stellar, from Derek the maitre d on down. Food is usually the best around, but this time it was a bit disappointing. We were there early for New Year’s Eve and things seemed rushed. Not what we expected for sure. I usually give high marks for CG’s, but not this time...
Began by being jumped over in line for the hostess, treated not in a positive manner by the hostess. Then was bombarded with having to wait at the bar until my reserved table was ready. Wasn't informed that a salad with dinner would cost an additional $10/salad. Figured with the price would receive more with the entrees. Won't be returning in the future
Overall it was a great dining experience. The food was excellent but a bit pricey for what it is. My wife got a special with lamb chops and shrimp and it was $45. That was a little pricey for the amount of food given. Also the place is a little small which made it noisy at points but overall the mood in the place was really nice. I recommend just expect the food to be pricey if you want meat.
Had dinner with my wife while visiting St. Louis prior to seeing a show at the Fox. Wife had Lobster ravioli which was tasty in a great cream sauce. I had a chilean sea bass special over a lobster risotto. Very good... great flavor, cooked perfectly. Bread & butter was also very good. Food arrived quickly and we were able make it to the show on time. Also, we found free street parking in front of the restaurant. PS. Definitely glad we made reservations!!! Busy place.
We have been to Charlie’s many times. This time, on Open Table, we had made a special request for Tim and in the front room. They called to confirm my reservation and our special requests and were able to accommodate both. It’s rare, if at all that restaurants pay attention to the special requests when booking online. We are forever loyal to Charlie’s!
As always, this meal eperience at Charlie Gitto's was outstanding. I bring my family, wife, daughters, sons in law to enjoy an authentic Italian meal 4 to 6 times a year at Charlie Gitto's. The service is always top rate, the food is outstanding, and the atmosphere is very vibrant. As for the food, the toasted ravioli is hand made fresh daily, and it shows. All of the pastas are made fresh in house daily as well, my favorite being the tortellini which is always exceptional. On this occasion, we had dessert after the meal, and as always, the Italian Coconut Cream cake was wonderful. We also tried the fudge cake, and it too was very, very good. Service was impeccable, and we will continue to return to Charlie Gitto's on a regular basis.
