Charlie Gitto's 'On the Hill'
First time here after many recommendations from friends. A real Italian joint. Dark, clean and lots of close tables.
Pizza was thin crusted (surprise for an old Italian place) but very well cooked and topped.
Pasta Borghese is their specialty and it had a good flavor but could have used more red pepper punch.
Lobster Bisque bowl was heavy and rich and veal with lump crab was cheesey and very well made.
1 big problem......ALL of the servings arrived luke warm. with no exceptions. Before long, the soup was actually cold. This consistent trait took away from the entire dining experience..
Next time, we will look elsewhere
The food is good. Last time we had an amazing waiter who really added to the experience. This waiter wouldn't bring me water when I asked (after sitting for 10 min without water). He brought our cocktails before the water service and I asked again. The girl who brought us our water told us the bread was in the oven. Our bread never came. When we received our entrees, I asked her if the bread was out yet. She blamed it on someone else, brought us bread, it was ice cold. Just not the kind of experience where you really feel taken care of, especially considering the prices.
Great place for a date or dinner with friends. Host was welcoming, waitress was knowledgable about the menu and recommended the rigatoni, which was outstanding.
Great date night atmosphere. Service was prompt and non-obtrusive. Would recommend.
This is the best Italian food in St. Louis, and quite possibly the best I've had ever
Treated our family from out of town with a birthday celebration for my husband. Everything was perfect!
We are from out of state and knew nothing about this restaurant until we started reading reviews online.
The high standards discussed in other reviews held true for our visit. If you are in St. Louis, it is most definitely worth the drive/Uber ride to Charlie Gitto's On the Hill. It is a classic, traditional Italian restaurant, with deep wooden decor, high end but not overbearing service, exceptional quality food and recipes, and an overall nice experience. If you like good, real Italian food, make sure to eat here!
We had an amazing experience. The service was amazing from the moment we stepped in the door until we left. Food was very good and served quickly. Very classy restaurant along with very classy employees. I would definitely go back and recommend to anyone!
Friendly staff, delicious food, and a cozy atmosphere. I had the Veal Cordon Bleu, which was the special that night. It was incredible. I also had the potato gnocchi as a side. It was so soft and so cheesey. Also had the aroncini appetizer and creme brûlée for dessert. A+ all the way around.
Excellent choices for dinner. Seafood Nd pasta were wonderful
Excellent place on the hill! Authentic Fried Ravioli is the best I have ever had and a must if I'm in St. Louis. Place is not formal but they do not allow shorts and tshirts which is fine with me. The dress code helps protect the mood they are trying to create. Always great and attentive service! I will be back!
We visited this restaurant while in town from Memphis. We were not disappointed and throughly enjoyed our meal. The ambiance, food and service was great. We had the toasted ravioli, veal and the grouper special. My only complaint, though very small, is that the server didn’t guide us with any selections or suggestions. However, he was very efficient and professional. Would definitely visit again!
This was our first time to Charlie Gitto's restaurant and we had a wonderful experience. The lobster bisque, halibut special, and lasagne were OUTSTANDING! The lighting in the restaurant could be a bit brighter for it was difficult to read the menu. Otherwise, the staff was extremely friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to someone visiting St. Louis.
Awesome . Best service ever and good out of this world. Love Thomas
The food was outstanding. The service was good, although a little bit slow at times. The waiter was very likable, but we waited long periods of time to have our drinks filled. Overall, it is a gem of a restaurant, and I would highly recommend it based on the food, and ambiance.
The food has always been excellent. My friends and I really enjoy everything about CG. They asked if we were celebrating anything special, and it was my birthday weekend...waiter brought me a slice of cake, with a candle. It was delicious! Can’t wait to go back.
I found the service to be outstanding. There are no complaints at all there. The food was superb as well, seasoned and prepared to near perfection and served in hearty portions. However, I would suggest that if you are going to list "business casual" as your dress code that you actually enforce it. There were people being seated in shorts and t-shirts. That is not something I want to see on Saturday evening at a nice restaurant.
We have been to Charlie Gitto’s on the Hill several times, and it never disappoints. The inside is a little dated, which I actually like. It has the feel of an old, established Italian restaurant with great service and food.
Food, service and entire experience was above and beyond expectations. Highly recommend!
The waiter was excellent and knew his way around the wine list very well! The food was absolutely amazing, and you can also get 2 half orders of different pastas instead of one whole order of just one type!
This is by far, one of the best restaurants in St. Louis. We celebrate most special occasions here, but just as often, just go because we crave the food!
Thomas gave us great service throughout the night, the baked ravioli, seafood pasta, and veal were delicious!
The food was below average. The seafood risotto was too salty and the halibut special was touted to be gluten free...and found to not be safe if gluten is an allergy. The wine we ordered to accompany dinner came well after we started.
Great food, nice ambiance. Would definitely go here again!
Awesome place I reserved for my husband ‘s birthday. He loves it!
Wonderful food and atmosphere, all the food was spectacular
Great for special occasions, date night, or just a relaxing dinner out. Delicious food and impeccable service.
Great place to eat. Amazing food! Really nice setting.
Excellent food. Service could have been better. The gnocchi with creamy bolognese sauce was incredible.
Food was pretty good, chicken was a little dry, wine was great but service was horrible....we asked for recommendations and he was not to confident with suggestions and he didnt describe the food well at all he also didn't come back to the table but only once.
Derek and his entire team are absolutely incredible. The food is truly home cooked Italian and so delicious. We also catered from them twice this year and each time they went above and beyond and left a lasting impression. Looking forward to going back on our next work trip!
Amazing Italian place
We had the absolute best time! Service was superb and the food was outstanding!! Couldn’t have asked for a more enjoyable evening.
Great service with even greater food!
great service, outstanding food, new york strip, pasta, fried ravioli,
Great service. All courses of the meal came to the table at an appropriate amount of time.
Charlie Gitto's on The Hill never fails to impress, but this night everything was exceptionally good!!
We were in town for a college visit and wanted to go to the Hill for Italian. A friend recommended Charlie Gitto's - and I am so glad she did. From the minute we stepped in the door we were made to feel like "family." The service and food were top notch! Will definitely return when we are in town again.
Great service, great food, and an intimate environment - would highly recommend if you're looking for an authentic Italian spot in STL!
Always a great time having a meal here.
One of our St. Louis and the Hill favorites.
