Charlie Bird

4.3
4.3
153 Reviews
$31 to $50
Contemporary American
Charlie Bird's serves proper Italian cuisine with a charming and modern aesthetic. Small plate options include the escarole and parmigiana salad with crispy toast and the Roman burrata with pickled cherries and almonds. Entrée options showcase Charlie Bird's inventive recipes, such as the warm spring asparagus with hazelnuts and parmigiana, the roasted chicken with spicy arugula, and the wild ocean trout with charred onion. Pasta dishes are popular and include the rigatoni with guanciale and peas, the gnocchi rosa with basil and ricotta, and the lamb ragu pappardelle. For the ideal end to your meal, enjoy Charlie Bird's warm chocolate budino with rich olive oil gelato and caramelized Rice Krispies with a hot cappuccino.

Unfortunately it was not a good experience and do not recommend. As far as the food, the appetizers and desserts were good, but the entrees were inedible: specifically the short rib special was too fatty and the grilled bass was gone off and way too fishy. We told the waiter that and he neither apologized or offered us to order something else in place. He was more focused on rushing us through the table, where he gave us the bill within an hour and a half as the hostess said they had another reservation waiting. As a long time NYer (also worked in a NYC restaurant for a couple of years) It's understandable that during the holiday season, restaurants are trying to book as many tables as possible, but ruining one customers experience to get another customer in, is not a good policy.

Overall, was pleased with the experience. The food was good though the portions were sooooo small (and prices were high), it was disappointing and we were still hungry after the meal!

Such an incredible menu, everything is always fresh and delicious. It's definitely a slower service over lunch and not as many people around. Nevertheless the food was still delicious! Love the razor clams.

This is my first time for lunch here. Service was beyond slow and the food was mediocre at best for the expensive price tag. I prefer my other options in the area such as Hundred Acres.

The food and outdoor seating was great. The burrata and cucumbers was not what I expected. The service was very slow. Greeted probably over 10 minutes after we sat. Had to ask for our wine to be refilled since it was on ice. For the level of food that is being served I thought the experience would be more cohesive, especially if the table is at over $100 a head at brunch.

Our dinner at Charlie Bird was fantastic. From the hostess, bartender and waitress, the service was friendly and hospitable. The food at Charlie Bird was amazing! Some of the best I've had in NYC and I'm a foodie. It's unique, light and clean yet very flavorful. The chicken and sea bream were both delicious as were all the small plates and sides. The music was eclectic which gave the restaurant a more modern feel. It was perfect to come with family but would also work well with friends or on a date. Thanks for a great experience, will be back soon!

Had an edge to him. Spoke to his counter parts about how he used to "beat up NYU kids". Made fun of other guests. Me and my husband always sit at the bar for our date night every week and have to say we never experienced such a rude, non-servicing bartender. He needs a new career. Would never go to this restaurant because of him. Which is sad because we loved our food!

Service was phenomenal as always, but the food wasn't as good as the first times I had come. I thought the focaccia was phenomenal, octopus was undercooked, gnocchi was good but lacking in flavor, and Nero fussili which usually is to die for was hard and unappetizing- like it had been reheated, the wine was amazing and the chocolate desert with Rice Krispies was heavenly, but with that many good restaurants in NYC I won't be going out of my way next time to come back. I was sorely disappointed. I hope they haven't gotten used to their popularity and hence lowered the quality of the food.

Our waiter told us it had been 38 minutes - as if that were nothing - when we asked where our entrees were, adding it would be a few more minutes, "but we're kinda busy..." Not good enough for a place that runs $120+ per person with drinks. We asked to speak with a manager who offered an indifferent "apology" and bought us a round of drinks. At that point it was too late. I'll avoid having an otherwise delicious dinner ruined by lousy service and I'll find another farm-to-table option in the city. There are many.

Visited Charlie Bird for my wife's birthday. Made it clear in the reservation process that we were celebrating. The restaurant is good looking. Not over the top special, but very nice. Service was informed and laid back. Food was top top notch. Music was way too loud and way too much hip hop. I love the genre, but it was over the top. For the price, i figured they would have put a candle in our dessert, wished a happy birthday, bought a dessert, or something. The occasion was just not recognized. I would not go back to celebrate something again. Either their communication was lacking or too cool for school.

Yes we were accommodated after arriving late for reservations (late Broadway play). But it seemed busboys or food runners waited on us rather than waiters. The food was okay, but not 'buzzworthy.' The scene was kind of cool. But overall, Charlie Bird was a let down. Won't be going back.

They sat us outside and told us that if it rains they cannot move us inside. After eating dinner outside it started to rain and we were ok with sitting under the umbrella, they then told us they can no longer serve us. Did not even ask if we wanted dessert- they said its not fair for their servers to walk out in the rain. We told them we were not informed of this when we decided to sit outside. After complaining- the owner came out and was not apologetic- he kinda just made excuses for the whole thing. Its too bad because the food was really good and I would have gone back if the owner was sincere or truly apologetic for out bad experience.

We had a great meal but I did not really like my server. She seemed a bit pretentious, as if she was doing us a great favor by serving us. She had an annoying affectation that was not only picked up by me but by others in my party (we were 6 people). I get that these are trendy places and I am always anxious to give new places , cuisines, chefs, etc. a try. Again, our meal was very good, but an annoying or disinterested server can totally ruin the complete dining experience, because in the end, it is a dining experience, and the attitude and attention of the server are an integral part.

The food was, as on two previous visits, very good to excellent, smart and inventive. However, the service was abysmal -- with the exception of one of the hosts, who at least tried to be somewhat friendly, everyone from the co-host to the bartender to our server was brusque, disinterested, and bordering on rude. Given my previous experiences, I had brought two good friends who are in the food business to dinner with me, and I was embarrassed to have brought them. No matter how hip you think you are, you need to at least make the effort to be hospitable. Last time at this restaurant for me.

We had a great time at Charlie Bird at our recent dinner! The Focaccia bread they bring for the table is absolutely delicious. We shared two pastas, two main dishes, the farro salad (which is heavenly), the bone marrow, artichokes and cauliflower. The only sad part of the meal was when they informed us that brussels sprouts are no longer on the menu, since they are seasonal. Next time!

Made reservations for my birthday dinner with my family, including my dad, who is not an adventurous eater and everyone loved it! We shared a bunch of small plates but I made a point to order the lamb belly. The food and cocktails were outstanding, which matched the great service. My dad even texted me the next day to tell me what a great dinner it was! Happy Birthday to me!

They may be trying too hard in the food category although you're likely to find at least several pairings that will tempt you. The small plates are indeed that, so think about adding a side. I quickly devoured the poached egg with polenta and shaved vegetables (not going to fill your daily vegetable quota with these lilliputian items) and was pleased my partner ordered fries and cauliflower for the table. The barista served up strong, excellent coffee, and the service was prompt and non-intrusive. Lovely glass pitchers of still and sparkling water are provided at the table, a welcome ecofriendly feature. Advice: check out the menu first if you are dining with any finicky eaters.

Friday lunch at Charlie Bird... A meal to be remembered. Beautiful room, vintage rap on the stereo and a lovely ambiance. Beginning with unbelievably fresh and well prepared seafood, inventive veg presentations and entrees straight out of a food magazine, this is a meal that lingered. Led perhaps though by the service? Kyle is simply the best and made a terrific meal even more remarkable. Kudos to all for a meal that represents the best of NYC.
