Charley's Restaurant & Saloon is a favorite of Willie Nelson's who has said "Charley's is my kind of place." Situated in the North Shore, the restaurant and saloon draws crowds consisting of locals, tourists and well-known artists, surfers and business people. Charley's Restaurant & Saloon got its start in 1969 and was named after Charley the Great Dane dog belonging to Jim Fuller.
Charley's Restaurant & Saloon has live entertainment nearly every night with big name entertainment, as well as local artists. It is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, but the kitchen does close by 9 p.m. On the weekends it is open 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. with the kitchen closing at 10 p.m. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. daily.
Our group of eight was greeted pleasantly by the hostess and seated promptly. Server came right out, got water to our table, explained the menu and specials and took our drink order. The cocktails were outstanding!
Our food order included fish and chips, pizza, hamburgers, came out timely, but none of it was anything we would order again.
We went there on open mike night. The service was great... Quick and efficient, but the ribs we ordered were way too salty and the performers that came up on stage were awful. When we left, there was a group of street musicians playing on the street outside. They were far better than anything we heard inside. I'll never go back there.
All of the Servers are Sweet and Professional. Love the Food and Music. A true gem on Maui!!
Fantastic food and live entertainment
Great food, great restaurant in a small town with lots of energy, this is a restaurant to kick back with friends and just have a good time.......if you are lucky you might just just see Willy Nelson
at the place. It happens from time to time..........we had a blast there. Next time we will go for open mike night!!!!!!!
$90 for 4 people for breakfast! I had half a papaya $4, one pancake $7, three pieces of Portuguese sausage $3 and coffee $3 =$17 Everyone else had meals versus just a pancake so it was more a lot more! Btw my pancake was burnt and the coffee was not good. Big mugs and I only drank half. I love coffee too but not this coffee! Save your $$ and go somewhere else!
Stopped at Charley's before we started the road to Hana. I was expecting good food, but it turned out give the best breakfast I've ever had!! The Hawaiin sweet bread French toast was amazing, the eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly, and the home fries had a great seasoning on them. It was so good, we made it a point to stop back at Charley's for breakfast again before we headed off to the airport. I will absolutely be going back every time I visit Maui.
Every time we go to MAUI we always make a trip to Charley's for breakfast. I just love their food. Pancakes, hashbrowns, country potatoes, etc. Just Love it!!!
Finally tried Charley's and was very underwhelmed by the experience. Walked in around 8:30pm and the place wasn't very busy. Still stood in the doorway for about 5 minutes before we were finally acknowledged. Very slow getting drinks and were never offered a second round/reiflls. The brisket was nothing special. Hardly the smoked meat I was expecting, with no discernable smoke ring and my wife's plate was about 40% fat. Not the experience I was hoping for.
Linda is loyal, observant and our regular server for our monthly Old F_ _ _ s Koffee Klatch.-42
Stopped into Charley's in Paia for some pancakes and they were amazing. One humongous pancake was enough for 3 people! Good strong coffee too. Simple but lots of food. We'll be back. :)
Before we hit the road to Hana, we stopped at Charley's for breakfast. We loved the old feel and originality of the restaurant and taking in the photos of Willie Nelson on the wall. Our server was very attentive and we enjoyed having her help us. Our food was just ok, nothing special. Most of us ordered pancakes which were very large and most of us only ate half of what was on our plate. My son ordered the biscuits and gravy which I would not recommend. I think this is a better place to come in the evening when things are more lively.
WE were visiting from california. wanted to see paia AND watch the women's finals for world cup! had a great time, enjoyed the food and atmosphere! service was really good and the game started and ended very well!! liked supporting the longer term, local business too!
Service was awesome. Food was great. Music was great. Awesome small town establishment.
There was no experience. Our confirmed reservations~ denied. We drove quite a distance, stood in line, to be told our reservations meant nothing. We expected to pay for the entertainment when we got there. To then be told that the show was 'sold out' and that reservations didn't count was confusing. Your site is confusing. It's cool, though. We found a great party elsewhere.
I was entertained with open mic night. The food was amazing! I had the fried chicken, so good!!
We went here for a group dinner after HS graduation , my local friend had been here multiple times in the past and had good experiences. Our 1st waitress was horrible to the point we asked her to either wait on us or give us a new waitress. We then got Rachel as a waitress and she saved the night! Food wasn't great but was Ok. Would be a nice spot for the live music as long as you can get a decent waitress.
Excellent happy hour specials!
Had Mother's Day Breakfast at Charlies with another family. We had never been there and were pleasantly surprised. Kim was a fantastic waitress. The food was good with plenty of choice even for the pickiest eater among us. It was a good pick for Mother's Day
Breakfast was good, had pancakes w/ macadamia nuts and French toast. Staff was friendly and happily suggested menu items. I'm a big eater and ordered my 2 items from children's menu (as suggested) as well as side of bacon and could not finish it all. Others in party ordered off regular menu and none were able to finish theirs as well. All portions are large.
Great place to enjoy a trip down the Willie Nelson highway of music and fun
Was a little disappointed in the entertainment and when I saw the guy open-up by sitting down, I thought that ---oh ohhh, this is going to be an interesting night of music. I wish that there was more Hawaiian music available on Maui especially in Paia as the atmosphere is really relaxing. I was hoping that Willy K would walk through the door and give us a few numbers that he is famous for doing. I just took a chance and flew into Maui and brought my visiting California friends hoping that we would hear at least one Hawaiian number since this was "Maui". Made the best of the night and still like the atmosphere at Charley's. Mahalo Glenn
We decided to eat dinner in Paia as it is reasonably close to the airport and we had a late flight. We found Charley's on OpenTable and the menu looked good. Two of us had pizza, one teriyaki chicken sandwich and one kids sliders. All were great. Everything was homemade and very tasty. The place was very busy with a live band. I would return on a night when I had more time and stay a bit longer, it seemed like a fun place!
The pancakes were delicious as well as the bacon and breakfast potatoes! We will for sure dine at Charley's again the next time we visit Maui.
A good place to stop for local color. Great chili, worth the stop in itself. The menu is pretty typical tavern food. We tried the fried chicken, which is one of the restaurant's' favorites, but it wasn't a big hit for us. Very moist - like a broasted chicken, but the breading was soggy and just rubbed off, and there wasn't much flavor in the chicken itself. Served with a cole slaw and a jalapeno corn bread that was pretty darn good. Also had the ny strip steak that was good and grilled just right. That came with a macaroni and cheese side that used mostaccioli as the pasta and added bacon bits with the cheese. Heavy but tasty. We also had the kale salad, which was pretty good, Nice dressing. The floor plan is L shaped. The foot of the L is the front, where you come in and has tables and a screen running old music videos. Queen's "We are the Champions" was on when we came in. The bar and stage are in the long part of the room. We stayed back in the foot of the L and were glad. A local band was playing in the other part of the bar and they were loud and not that good. Willie Nelson has an interest in the tavern but wasn't there that night. However, his giant guitar, Trigger, was there and it was neat to see the various signatures on it. Service at Charlie's is excellent. Every server was attentive, enjoyable and polite.
There are restaurants with better food in Pa'ia. But only a few with more local color. (Cafe Mambo for color and pretty good food, Des Amis for food and color. The gelato place across Main street has good stuff.
A very active night scene with managing staff and waitresses serving with grace right through the hectic hours Very accommodating environment to host both dinner and the lively entertainment. Popular BCBCBluegrass took the focus to the cocktail hour and the evening flowed with music till close A great dining and dancing experience in paia
We arrived just after Happy Hour, and the place was buzzing. I had the fish and chips, which is local fresh fish, being Mahi Mahi that night and it was great. My wife had theseared Ahi Tuna and she enjoyed it as well. I am sure it is always frequented by locals, and everyone seems to enjoy themselves.
We really enjoyed our visit. The only drawback was that service was slow. There were three very hard working, and very pretty, waitresses who seemed to be working very hard. Food coming out of the kitchen seemed to be the problem. Although we were in no particular hurry, a 35 minute wait for a hamburger and sliders seemed excessive. I understand Willie Nelson occasionally hangs out here, (at least that is what the TV ad says). I just bet that with or without Willie the bar scene is great for a casual night out.
Fun evening in Paia. Cute little restaurant in a fun town with boutique shopping. Great menu great food nice waitress
Food was good, service was fast and friendly, music was awesome. Have already recommended to people we met in Maui.
Was advertised as Kalua cooked. The turkey was shredded and very dry. I would have preferred it be sliced. The sides and the pumpkin pie were very good. My server was very sub par. Valley girl personality and never checked with me other than to ask which desert I wanted
We arrived early for our reservation, but they quickly accommodated us. Despite being out of several items on the menu (not uncommon for island living, & hey, it was Thanksgiving!), service was excellent and the food was very tasty. The bar isn't fancy but clean. It seems to draw the football crowd with some nice-sized TVs, has some menu items to fit with hippie Paia, yet retains its feel as a saloon you might walk into in Texas. I hear their pizza is excellent too!
No doubt one of the most enjoyable nights on Maui! The live blues music was excellent, food great and very affordable, atmosphere friendly, we met new friends and we all give Charley's high high marks for a very friendly place. No wonder willy and friends hang there!
Worth the drive to have breakfast. Had the blueberry pancake and it is stuffed with fresh blueberries and probably 10" in diameter. One and a side of breakfast meat would be a filling breakfast. Reasonable prices and good service. Paia is a nice, walkable town with many shops near to visit before or after a meal at Charley's. Would return again!
A great place in "upcountry." Legendary people have stopped in there and enjoyed it very much; so did we! Excellent breakfasts!
It was my birthday last saturday. read the menu online and wanted their dinner. But we arrived 2 hours before dinner would be served and ended up eating from the lunch menu. Although it wasn't what I wanted, it was very good! We live on the other side of island so timing can make things difficult. I would recommend this restaurant, the food was really good and the waitress was very nice. :)
Not many people around mid-week, service was excellent, and so was the food. We will go back.
Started with a iced mocha, it came with lots of whipped cream, and I ordered another!
Had the bruschetta as appetizer, it was very good!
Shared the steak poki bites, super tasty!
I had the fried chicken which was spot on, cornbread was delicious and coleslaw perfect...I even ordered a pizza to go and ate most when I got home.
Mixed drinks were excellent.
Waitress was understanding of friends allergies and did right thing and asked the cook what was okay.
Met the owner, Jonathan, and told him we had a marvelous dinner! (Hoping for Maui Onion rings next time)
Great service! Food was very good for a last minute decision to get a bite as we'd just landed on Maui. It was mid- afternoon so the place wasn't busy. However I see that they have a regular music series (with a permanent stage) so I'd like to go back when the place is rocking with music!
Charley's is one the first spots in town, so it's loved by locals by tradition. And sometimes the "famous" do come in for a drink or even to play a little music. But, it's tired...the food needs to kick it up a notch. The drinks are watery...
