Charivari Ratings and Reviews
We came for my husband's birthday dinner. He heard positive recommendations years ago and wanted to give it a shot. We were sat promptly and waited for approximately 15 minutes before someone finally approached us about getting waters. We tried to place drink orders and were told that he was not the waiter and couldn't get the drinks but will tell the waiter. Soon after, a waiter approaches us and asks if we wanted to place drink orders. Confused, we tell him what happened and then minutes after that ANOTHER waiter comes up. We basically never knew who our waiter was the whole night during our appetizer and drink orders. We had to flag waiters down to place our main course orders, our food was late (our main courses were lukewarm while our sides were hot - clearly the kitchen did not time things well). Terrible to even say considering my husband ordered his steak rare and the meat was not cooked properly as it tasted borderline cold. Also, because it took so long to get our food, we were discouraged to get desserts when asked. It's a bad sign when we had to ask for refills on our waters and alcoholic beverages. No one was rude but clearly the waitstaff service and kitchen , but it was astonishing to pay so much money for courses and services that were disappointing. Basically, I would've had a more satisfying service and meal at McDonald's or Chili's and I hate those places.
Another great meal. One person in our party said it was the best meal he’s ever had because the lamp chops were that good. Lobster bisque and mushroom soup were excellent. Fresh fish filet prepared perfectly.
One person in our party said the crab cake wasn’t as good as before but I didn’t taste it personally.
The chef takes great pride in everything ge cooks. Favorite restaurant in Houston.
Amazing! Each time my husband and I go here for dinner we get something different and it
is better than the last time. The food was more than we could both eat but well worth it.
We only go here on special occasions and make it a treat. The owner and his wife are always
there to greet us at some point in the evening. There is not another place in Houston that
is so personable and such a delight to go out for dinner.
Can't wait until our next night out to this wonderful restaurant.
17 years open and getting better every year!
We tried out the restaurant during Houston's extended Restaurant Week Month, heard about it but had never tried it. It was excellent and we will definitely go back to try other items on the menu. I had a wonderful salmon dish and my dining partner had the Wiener Schnitzel. He said it easily rated equal to Schnitzel in Germany and Austria. The Garlic soup as a first course was creamy and had just enough garlic in it to make you aware of it but not too much to make you look for breath mints immedidately. I had a very good mixed salad with lettuces and pears under a perfect dressing.
We plan to go back one night for dinner and try some of the other items on the menu that looked tempting. They have different lunch specials and a special Octoberfest menu available in addition to their regular menu.
For a late weekday lunch, the dinning room was not too full but busy. The waitstaff easily handled the crowd and we were checked up by the manager and the chef during the meal. All of the other diners around us seemed pleased with their meals.
Incredible food. Menu and flavors unlike anywhere we've been. Chef personally came out to talk us through the menu. Quality sourced food, cooked perfectly, incredibly seadoned. Wonderful family owners and excellent staff. Will be back as much as possible. Don't miss this gem!
We had a fabulous dinner last night! Food was fresh and tasty!! We had a fig appetizer that was awesome. Both of us had fish options. The chef knows how to prepare fish. The prices are always reasonable and the owners and staff are very welcoming. This is our favorite Houston restaurant.
Although we're spoiled with shuttle service to the theater at other midtown restaurants, Charivari's food and service make it well worthwhile in having to drive and park once dinner is over.
All four in our party made selections from the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu which offered great three course dinners. Especially noteworthy was the bisque starter. Entrees at our table included sole, chicken and vegetarian, all perfectly prepared and well presented. Cobbler dessert was delicious.
Service was excellent.
Look forward to returning soon.
María was very nice & helpful and the food was good except for the bartender serving me a sweet Chardonnay when I ordered Pinot Grigio. When I questioned it and said it was a mistake he gave me a bad look and attitude. After I insisted he reluctantly brought me a new bottle of Pinot Grigio to open and pour at the table in an attempt to prove he had originally given me Pinot Grigio. I know my wines well and the new bottle was NOT the same wine previously served me. He definitely served me Chardonnay the first time. I eat out expecting to enjoy my wine/meal and disdain wait staff attitude when dining so don't know if I will return soon to Charivari in spite of Maria's hospitality and the good food. This experience really affected my impression of Charivari. María should find a better bartender with better manners for her clientele if she doesn't want to run the risk of losing them. When she does I will return.
Outstanding from A to Z: very nice atmosphere, outstanding cuisine with varied options from the meat to fish to vegetarian to vegan to gluten-free cuisine options prepared by a chef of very high quality with cares indivually for the customer. The Weiner Snitzel sets the high bar of taste. A class place.
Disappointed in the Restaurant Week food. There were 4 people at our table and no one really liked their food. Hanger steak was not good quality & overcooked & pomme frites cold, sole & chicken too salty and we like salt. None of the meals were hot & in fact room temp, like they had pre-made & sitting somewhere waiting to get served. Would have sent back had we not been hosting friends. The peach cobbler was all pastry except for very last bite which had a quarter size amount of peaches. Strudel was horrible, not edible (very dry and tasteless, sauce was also not tasty). Ate here before and enjoyed it. Would think restaurants would put their best meals out there during restaurant week to gain more future customers. Meal was a failure.
We went here for Restaurant Weeks because their menu seemed so good. We were not disappointed. Fabulous service, quiet atmosphere, friendly staff all made for a pleasant evening with our friends. I don't recommend this place is you're in a hurry. We had time to savor our food for each serving. Excellent wine menu was a big plus. I had the hangar steak, my wife had the sole. My wife claimed the sole her favorite dish, maybe ever. While my steak was very good I wish I had tried the sole.
The excellent continental cuisine lived up to it's reputation at Charivari's. It's been on my list for quite some time, and I chose to come here for my birthday lunch on a Thursday afternoon with work colleagues. There is a respectable German beer selection as well as a select few well crafted cocktails. The lunch time regulars appeared "older" than I am, but I figure they've had more time to discern good taste! I'll definitely be back.
Went for Restaurant Week for the first time, even though I lived right down the street for about a year!
Enjoyed the meal - chicken breast stuffed with manchego cheese, delicious! Apple strudel for dessert was flaky and decadent, just what a dessert needs to be!
Our waiter was attentive yet gave my friend and I space and a chance to catch up....excellent service.
Other reviews say it's the spot to go for lunch, so I will definitely be back to try it again then!
The service was extremely slow. Steak was tough. There was issues with the check and as a small group (8) we asked for separate checks and this was not honored. The service staff had to go back and redo which took another 40 minutes. I would not recommend. We were in the restaurant for over three hours.
