In our opinion, this is the best French Restaurant in Kansas City. The Duck Wontons and Caesar Salad are always highlights. The atmosphere is relaxing and pleasant. It has never been too busy when we have gone for a later dinner. Steaks, lamb and Salmon are good choices. We enjoy the 4 course dinner. I get a dessert and my husband gets 2 “firsts”. That way we can order 2 duck wontons and the mussels which are also excellent. The Caesar salad features a fried egg on top and it has been our salad choice. For dessert the flourless chocolate was delicious. Try Charisse, you will not be disappointed!
We came here for our anniversary. There was only one server who also bartended but he was extremely efficient and it made it feel very cozy and intimate. Food was good. Wine pairings were great:
This is a fantastic spot for a quiet or business lunch. Only downside is the lack of parking - be sure to have a plan or be able to walk. Food is fantastic and service is usually great. They appeared a little understaffed on the day we were there - but food was still stellar.
I have never had a bad meal or service. Everything is always phenomenal.
A glass of wine was ordered. I watched the bartender pour a taste from the already open bottle. He dumped the bottle and opened a new one. I’ve never seen that at a restaurant before.
We took our assistant out for a birthday lunch. Food delicious/ service very good.
I love eating here.
Be sure to get there before 6 if you want to participate in happy hour. Not 6:01, but 6. As whiskey drinkers, we try to be aware of pricing on stuff when buying by the 1/2 ounce. So, a 1.5 ounce drink increased to a 2.0 ounce pour should be 1.33 times the price of the 1.5 ounce drink. Expect to pay more. Some bars charge a standard $2 "rocks" charge, for example. Not this place. Haven't quite figured out their formula, if they have one.
As a customer, if the waiter says I can substitute one vegetable for another, it would help if they also mentioned there would be a $5 upcharge. Total discrepancies were a little over $10. Not a huge deal, but it unnecessarily leaves a bad taste after an otherwise great dinner.
Beet salad was absolutely one of the best salads I have ever had. Waitress was pleasant and helpful (other than previously mentioned). Steak, lox, salmon were all excellent. Surprised it wasn't busier. Diners are missing out on a very (mostly) enjoyable experience.
Food was amazing. Quiet enough to have table conversation. Staff super nice and helpful. Recommend to others and they are there the next night. 14 of them!
Took my brother and his wife from out-of-town to our favorite KC restaurant and it did not disappoint.
Great place or intimate date.
Great dinner and perfect location before attending a concert at the Midland Theater.
I had the Prix Fixe menu option. So much food for a great price. The food could not have been better.
We ate lunch after the noon rush. Service was very good and the food was delicious! Recommend the seasonal tomato salad and the quiche!
Service with an attitude and mediocre food. Raw bone marrow [the way the chef intended]. Bolognese so dry I couldn’t eat it and took it home thinking I’d dump a healthy amount of tomato sauce on it. And the cheese course, offered on the dessert menu? Since when has Brie been so bland? Since when is it OK to serve days-old unseasoned toasted bread that is better suited for croutons? Since when the $10 you pay for such course should be so much fruit and so little cheese? Charisse does not make it to our must-go-again-list.
The only issue we have ever found is service - there are never enough people working there to take care of clientele.
The French onion soup and pot-au-creme were wonderful! Other menu items were yummy, but those two are very special. This was my second visit. I will continue to bring friends to my “ new find”.
Great place to take clients. Please do not get rid of the French dip sandwich. It is the best in town. The fries are to die for. The champagne vinaigrette salad is also a wonderful staple.
Excellent cuisine and impeccable service characterized this restaurant. The menu offered just enough choices. The downtown location is away from the crowds, which was fine for a quiet dinner.
We got the charcuterie board and a glass of wine. Entrees looked expensive for not a lot of variety. What we had was very good!
Great food as usual - service was v good but, as always, not particularly friendly
This was my first visit. Both my friend and I started with the onion soup. It was delicious! We enjoyed our mains. We were celebrating a birthday, so of course we had dessert. They were amazing!
Excellent on every level.
Larger portion than you normally expect from a French Restaurant. Caesar salad was outstanding .
We love this place. Rarely busy, always great food with a quiet atmosphere.
Nice Quiet place. Great food and wine. Good service.
It amazes me that this place has not become the darling of the food writers in Kansas City. The menu has broad appeal but more importantly, the flavors and textures of what comes out of the kitchen are superb. My wife loved her beet salad, and my Caesar was greatly enhanced by the lightly grilled croutons and the fried egg on top. Her rack of lamb had a somewhat spicy flavor that she enjoyed, and my steak frites was a thicker than usual ribeye topped lightly with a tasty sauce and accompanied by what must unquestionably be the best french fries in the city. The chef who owns this bistro has demonstrated for many years that he has skills that compete with any of his competitors. He never disappoints.
We love this restaurant! The service is excellent and the food is always outstanding. The server/host/bartender made exquisite drinks, as well! We visit as often as possible - thank you for another lovely evening!
We had dinner before a show at the Music Hall and we let our server know as soon as we got seated that we had a time frame to work with because of the show. We asked about ordering the prefix menu (we allowed ourselves 1 1/2 hours for dinner) and whether or not the kitchen would be able to handle that or if it would take too much time. Our server said the kitchen would be fine, it would just be up to us if we would eat fast enough. Against my better judgement, we took his advice and each ordered the prefix menu. The food was fabulous, but the service was not timely enough to enjoy that meal in the time we had allotted. I really wish the server would have just said that the prefix menu is better suited to a 2+ hour dinner and is not meant to be ordered otherwise.....
Bottom line - the food is fabulous!!
Fine downtown venue; not crowded after post-work rush.
We were very disappointed with our meal at Charisse. I had hoped the trout, which I always enjoyed, was still on the menu but the only fish was salmon, which I had just eaten earlier. My husband and I both chose the lamb rack, in my case because it was gluten free and I liked the vegetables listed: zucchini, squash, fingerlings, tomato. The lamb was okay but hard to eat; the vegetables came as a sort of ratatouille, mixed and soft and indistinguishable. I found a couple of bits of fingerling. My husband may have found one. This was not a good preparation. Also, our plates came with three large triangles of something I asked my husband to sample and identify. He couldn't. They were fried pita, which didn't belong on a gf plate. Not a good experience.
I went to Charisse for the first time this week for happy hour. The duck wontons, grilled shrimp, and the pork sliders were all delicious. I plan to return and hope they will incorporate more vegetable options to the menu. $5 glasses of wine were reasonable, too.
What a great experience and Hidden Gem! Sara provided us with excellent fun service. The food was amazing from start to finish. We enjoyed the 4 course meal with wine pairings. For first courses we enjoyed duck wontons, crab cakes and Mussels. All were delicious and above our expectations. Our second course was the best cesear salad we have ever had! The fried egg on top made it so special. For entrees we had the filet and strip steaks. Both were excellent. For dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake. Also delicious! The wines were all perfect and special. Sara was knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations. We enjoyed everything about our evening and can’t wait to go back and do it again! Thank you CHARISSE!
Second time there in as many months for lunch. Food is pretty good and there is a nice selection. My burger was a bit overdone but others in my party said there selections were excellent. My biggest complaint was the server; kind of snippy, brought check without asking if we wanted anything else, such as coffee or dessert.
A new spot for us! The bartender was also our waiter and he did a phenomenal job! Excellent service and amazing food. I’m excited to go back!
Nice quiet place to meet for lunch. Great food and service.
Great food and great experience. The poblano cheese soup was excellent.
Excellent meal. My only small critique would be there were not a many classic French dishes on the menu as I had hoped.
I had lunch at Charisse in March 2019. The food was excellent. Also, the service was fast, allowing for lunch in an hour if your time is limited.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Good price for a four course meal too.
Ok, this is one of the most uneven restaurants I have visited. On the latest trip (4 previous times), had a reservation for 5:30. Arrived and was told by the bartender that it would be a few minutes (in spite of other staff members casually milling about). Waited ~10 mins to be seated and was slightly annoyed. Then quickly realized that the server was acting as bartender, hostess, busser, and server with 4 tables seated. BUT she was quite capable and paced her service perfectly. The ribeye in the steak frites was mediocre quality, and the escargot was ok. The French onion soup and the crab cakes were quite on point. Service was good but spread too thin, food was good, but not over the top "take you to heaven" good. Will visit again, and hopefully this restaurant will live up to its potential.
