Both neighborhood hangout and special occasion spot, Charcoal is sometimes a bit confusing, but not when it comes to their very tasty food.
Great dinner! Other than having to wait 20 minutes past my res time, this was a great experience. We got wine for the ladies and old fashioneds for the fellas, all excellent. We ordered cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and wings for starters. Everything had the signature smoky flavor and char that made them so delicious, especially coupled with the tasty sauces each came with!
For mains we got 2 ribeyes and 2 flank steaks, all perfectly cooked, rested and sliced.
Overall excellent meal and restaurant!
The restaurant has nothing to prevent the sound from being overbearing, the noise level in the area set up for parties of 2 was outrageous, it ruined our meal, we had to yell at each other in order to know what we were saying to each other, in the area set up for 2's the tables are about 8 inches from each other, it was like being in a buss, the food was great the service tried to deliver but due to the noise they got our order all screwed up. won't go back unless I can sit close to the entry door where at the very least there is room between customers
Fabulous and unique cocktails, great service, and fantastic food. We will be returning!
Overpriced and the food was not overly good
The food is really delicious. The cauliflower was very tasty and the sauce was just the right amount of cucumber and was tzidiki like
Loved both the cod & salmon.
We felt rushed by the waiter and the place was half full
Loved the food!
The cabbage starter to short ribs , black cod, and Brussels spouts put us in food heaven!
Dessert was good and coffee delicious.
Casual beach atmosphere with families, which I enjoy.
I'll be back.
Our favorite neighborhood restaurant! The food is outstanding. It's not cheap, but well worth it when you really want to enjoy a meal and a premium cocktail, wine, or beer. We just keep going back!
Great place in Venice for a steak. I tried the Prime Ribeye and it was delicious! Don't over order on the starters and sides. For 4 people, we ordered a piece of the cabbage for starters along with a chopped salad. We also shared 1 baked potato and the brussel sprouts. There was plenty of food for all. Really tasty!!!
Second visit. The food continues to good if a bit pricey. Didn't receive everything I ordered after specifying the order in which I wanted things?
Kind of baffling really. Our waiter was patient and friendly and a manager apologized for the error.
Amazing restaurant definitely recommend it! Birthday boy said it was one of the top 5 meals he's had in the last 10 years.
Amazing flavors! We enjoyed surf, turf, and air and it was all very yummy!
We were disappointed in the food. Overpriced and overrated. Good margarita though.
Not only is the food exceptional, with many unique & healthy choices, the service was impeccable. Knowledgeable staff who aimed to please, not rush us out. Try the black margaritas for a special treat.
I have been here with friends several times and each visit has been excellent. Service was very attentive and excellent suggestions about menu. The food was terrific and the flavors always interesting
From the moment we parked the car with valet to leaving and being thanked, everyone there treated us very special. That says a lot about how they love their jobs. They were all very professional.
Now for the food, AMAZING! Every bite was a nice surprise!
Service is amazing! Waiter Frank and all the bus staff, sensational! We like the room. Disappointed by Soft Shell Crab. Not distinctively flavorful enough, very small portion. Ribs, carrots, cabbage all delicious and unique. Highly recommended. Peppers and fava bean dish too peppers heavy for me, but that's on me, it's right there in the advertising, first item, peppers! The fava beans tho were great.
second visit LOVE the food meats are great of course but the grilled veggies are amazing too
Always excellent food and outstanding service. Very imaginative combination of ingredients resulting in a delicious dish. However the food came out too quickly so we felt rushed. Tell the waiter to slow it down. They should change the menu more frequently.
Food was excellent and I'm picky AF
A great concept for a restaurant... the meats were delicious and so were the sides. Forewarning, everything is a la carte, you even pay for water!! I would suggest sharing entrees, the servings were quite ample. We had a lot to take home - granted we did 4 meat entrees for 4 people.
Charcoal Venice has been one of my favorite local eateries since it first opened, and remains so, except for one flub this past Saturday night that is entirely the fault of a newbie young host with lobe-plug earings and a brain to match. Though I made the reservation two weeks in advance and specifically asked for our favorite table, on arrival the table was taken by another couple while the restaurant was less than a third full (at the time). "I'm terribly sorry" became this nitwit host's continuous lament, as he said the same thing when I asked for a booth (several were empty) along with other open tables. "I'm terribly sorry, but the booths and those tables were asked for in advance," he drooled...well, what about MY request made two weeks in advance?!!! Anyway, the manager came around a short time later and apologized profusely (too late, sadly) and did buy us a round of drinks to make up for the nitwit's misstep, and as always, the table service and food (the bison ribeye is seasonal and out of this world) were exemplary. As long as you avoid the young nitwit host with the round black lobe-plug earing, you are sure to have a memorable dining experience.
We had a reservation for 5:45 on Saturday. When we entered the restaurant there were at least 6 empty booths but we were told all were reserved. When I asked for"what time" since we were so early, I was told whatever time they reserved the table for. Anyway we were given a corner table so no tables on both sides, which I appreciated. Everything is a la carte, including bread, which is a bit much. The appetizer, charcoal cabbage, tasted like cabbage with a burnt bottom. The pasta entre was very spicy, but good. The dessert of peanut butter chocolate crunch cake was ok but not great. Expensive but for this price I would head back to Ruth Chris or go to Chart House and have a full course meal, vegetables and bread for the same price.
We live in Marina Del Rey and whenever we have visitors, we always take them to Charcoal! The food is always incredible, along with the service and ambiance. Thank you!
The food was great but the service was exceptional! Christie made a meal into an experience and we had an incredible time!
I just think that the cooking here is superb. Love the menu...love the food....love the ambiance. I enjoy myself everytime I eat here....cabbage is a great starter....ribs are delish...everything is just wonderfully prepared. Lot it a lot!
Excellent neighborhood restaurant . The best food in the Marina. Char grilled Cabbage , chicken wings, Yukon potato, short ribs, cod, all delicious and different from the usual. Brunch is great too . Drinks are unusual and. Dry tasty. Great service. I love it
food was excellent; decor is minimal; service was *very* slow (has been good the other times we went there)
Great Food and Service! Went here for my Birthday and wasn't sure what to expect since we are from out of town and didn't really now the area very well. Its a bit pricey but totally worth it especially since I was celebrating my birthday. The food had a different twist with their homemade sauce (even ketchup was homemade) the staff was so friendly and knowledgeable and went out of their way to give us excellent customer service. Also their specialty cocktails were awesome. I had a Charcoal Margarita. It was excellent. I love innovative Restaurants like this and totally recomend this place.
Menu items were hit or miss
We visited Charcoal last Friday evening for the first time with our daughters. Peter was our server. The food and our server not only met but far exceeded our expectations so much so we booked a table for the next evening for our Easter family celebration. Again food and service were excellent! Charcoal will definitely be our go to restaurant for family and friends and maybe just the two of us on those weeknights. Great Job guys
Great spot for tasty food that is unlike what you find anywhere else. Loved the variety of meats, but also the sides that were just as delightful. A special favorite was the charred cabbage. I had never had cabbage prepared that way and you can be sure it will always be on my "must order" list. Will definitely be coming back!
This place is too notch. The bar had Tv's and the service was very good. This place has amazing meats
The restaurant was busy and fun; the bar is lovely to look at and the drinks are unusual and delicious. I love the manner in which you get your "doggie bag" at the door as you leave. I had a prime ribeye steak and it was fabulous, as was the stuffed baked potato and Brussels sprouts. The apple crumble for dessert was yummy, although when it arrived it was almost too hot to eat! Very lovely event and would love to go back.
Service excellent, food fine, chef renowned, hype overblown, drinks excellent. Half the meal was terrific. Other half, pretty terrible: Fish was fishy, vegetables inedible. West LA seems to love its overpriced casual spots to dine, which is fine; I will choose nearby Hatchet Hall over Charcoal any day. But if you are seeking a top-chef with creative cuisine: try Charcoal with a group, as the family-style dining seems better to share in a group of 4+ than ordering less for just 2.
Great food. Creative. Great selection of spirits and wines.
Cabbage, short ribs, duck and collard green salad are my favorites.
Loved everything we ate! We started with the cabbage roasted in embers, which was unlike anything I have ever eaten. The cabbage was slowly roasted so it was soft and sweet, with a crisp charcoal finish, served with a yogurt/lemon sauce. The short rib so tender it melted in your mouth. The presentation was very clever - it was one long bone with the meat sliced perpendicular, kind of fanned out. The steak was also delicious. And the charred Brussel sprouts divine.
Place was excellent except the service..... was extremely slow
have been coming here since they opened. the grilled meats are awesome, as are the tartares. waiters and bus service are exceptional, makes for wonderful night!
Been wanting to try this place and we finally made it. Was a great evening. Our waitress was amazing, attentive and knowledgeable. Not a cheap date, but worth it. Will definitely go back again!
Amazing!!!! Full of taste! Excellent wine, service and atmosphere!
Outstanding food. Everything done on fire or charcoal. Meats perfectly cooked. Service outstanding except for a little too long between apps and main, and two of three mains delivered before the third, creating an awkward period for about 4 minutes. Overall wonderful meal. Will be back.
