Located in the revitalized East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. This locally-relevant and globally-inspired restaurant partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. The restaurant features an ultra-dry aged Alberta beef display, a meandering ceviche raw bar, and riverfront and rooftop patios. At its heart is a custom-made Argentine wood-fired grill honouring the art of asado and the culinary inspirations of Spain and Italy.

We had just arrived in Calgary, 2 from Vancouver and 1 from Toronto. We looked at this place online and decided to give it a try. Best decision ever. We shared the 32 ounce porterhouse with fries and asparagus. We started with the bruschetta wth avocado and pistachios and finished with a lovely dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone. Loved the ambiance too. Thank you.
Too expensive food was not tasty neither were the tiny cocktails. Place looked awesome but you are lucky if you find the entrance. The only thing we enoyed was grilled bread and avocado pistachio dip. Can’t see us coming back maybe just maybe for this bread, dip and a beer on a way. No offence but I find it sooooo hard to believe this is Calgary’s second ranking restorabr on the top ten list. Super disappointed. This place is hard core overrated. Hope they read reviews and approve.

And Sebastian’s ... the bruschetta was amazing with avocado and nuts . The burger may be the best one I have had in a while and the smoked chicken... ridiculous!!!!
Strongly recommend this restaurant to locals and those visiting from out of town !
Appetizer pistachio brushetta was amazing but unfortunately the steaks were not great at all. Luckily they came with sauce but they were dry and bland tasting. Presentation of food was also a little odd...big plates. Our server was amazing though. Very attentive and prompt.
The service and ambiance was average.

Of course paid parking and was difficult to find a spot.
My drink was really good but after that it was down hill. Our vegetable dishes were, in one word, awful. The asparagus was completely limp and the kale was so crusted on top it was like paper that has been burnt and flaked. My friends dessert was so tasteless she turned up her nose and the piece de resistance was we were denied a latte because Phil and Sebastians closes at 9 Our steak was very tasty but for 98$ perhaps not.
We complained and received a refund for our sub par dishes.
Would definitely NOT return.
Sorry but it was not a good experience. The waitress was very nice and polite but the food experience was terrible. Wet, damp under cooked pizza: how is that possible unless it sat on a steam table? A 10 ounce steak that was lost initially, then the waitress said that the chef over cooked on the second attempt, came a third time and was raw, then after a while was told I was given the wrong steak and it was exchanged again. My guests were almost finished their meal by this time and it was then that I noticed that the pizza had only one piece consumed. The chef did send over one free dessert because of the mix up but our dining experience was terrible.
I booked a table for 5 of us at Charbar for Saturday morning. The service was amazing, the ambiance was stunning..... and the FOOD was to die for!! I can’t get enough of Charbar. I bring everyone I’m meeting up with there. It’s simply a great concept and a well run place. The Top Chef Canada chick really knows how to hit a home run!!!
A last minute Friday night dinner with close friends, Charbar had a table upstairs for us,
we settled in there was a guitarist playing latin music, not too load but lovely to listen too as we talked and dined ! The food was all amazing we shared a variety of dishes thumbs up across the board! Our waitress, I wish I had asked her name ....was fantastic! very knowledgeable very professional. She was reason enough to come back! She seemed happy to be there a great atmosphere all around! We will definitely go back!
We ate at Char Bar last Saturday after our wedding. There were 5 of us and the service was fantastic. We always had full water glasses, our next drinks were on the way as our current drinks finished. The food was amazing. We all ordered different things and there were zero complaints. My husband and friend shared the 32 ounce, 70 day aged Porterhouse and they can’t stop talking about it. The best steak my husband has ever had he says. I got the Fior de Lait pizza, deep fried sourdough balls and chocolate flan. It was all delicious but that flan was incredible. I’ve never had anything like it. Our two other friends got the 7 ounce steak and fries with asparagus. They got chorizo and fried egg to start and loved it all. Incredible day followed by an amazing dinner. The restaurant gave us all drinks on them to celebrate our wedding, which was greatly appreciated.
There was a wedding celebrating upstairs and they were Dutch and had their wooden shoes on. It was loud and at times I thought they might land in our laps, but our server offered us a different table several times. We declined as it just added to our experience.
Here for weekend brunch with 3 friends. We all had eggs benedict. Coffee from Phil and Sebastiens was excellent, though pricey. Food itself was very tasty, well presented and quickly prepared. Service also good. The building itself is beautiful. There is an excellent bakery in the same building. Really enjoyed myself here, will definitely return!
Our experience was good overall, but we weren't blown away by the food. We had empanadas and oysters to start and both were tasty. We had the pork short ribs for our main, along with the spicy kale salad. The ribs were okay but quite hard to eat as they had many small bones. Our server was really wonderful though, and the space itself is beautiful.

Did take a long time to be greated by a server who neglected to note the specials for the day. We asked for the server to return as we hadn't looked the menu. They took a very long time to return. Food took a very long time. It was longer than necessary lunch meeting
Best place I've ever had the pleasure of celebrating a birthday. I felt very special. I couldn't believe the excellent quality of all the ingredients and they cooked to perfection, I enjoyed every flavor and bite. Made for a wonderful night. Thanks chef Pelland!
