Char Steakhouse - Red Bank
Dinner with my wife is always a special occasion!
Having been here several times I was looking very forward to dinner with my wife. Boy was I disappointed! Everything started off fine. We had a drink at the bar and then brought to our table.Waiter was great! We started with appetizers. No issues. We ordered the tomahawk medium. It finally came and it was over cooked. Now having been to many steakhouses, sometimes it’s slightly under cooked or slightly over cooked. 99% of the time we just accept it. This time it was just too over cooked. Now before writing this review I looked at some other reviews and I found some about incorrect cooked steaks. The reason I say this is because when we called the waiter over he said we should cut into it because it could be the lighting in the restaurant. I’m guessing they are instructed to say this before they bring it back to the chef.He then said he would have to bring the manager over to verify it. Here’s where it got real bad! A woman came over as I was shining my phone flashlight on it. She said ok I was going to tell you about the lighting. We asked her opinion and she agreed it was a “tad” over cooked. She said she would fire up a new one but it would take 20 minutes. We said fine. Then she came back and said she would tell the kitchen to cook it medium rare and cook it a little more.Weird right? I mean cooking a steak medium rare and then a little extra would be medium. No? So we asked her are you inferring we ordered it wrong? She said no but the kitchen lighting is different. I always thought steaks were cooked by temperature? Not by looking at it under different lighting. Guess they need to get their lighting straightened out! We found her very unprofessional and a bit rude. Most places would just apologize and bring it back without a bunch of excuses. When they brought the new steak out it was rare and extremely fatty. We felt like it was a big FU! How do you not check it and realize this is unacceptable? Instead of debating we asked for it to be wrapped up and split!
This spot is not worth the high cost. It follows the same business model as most other steak houses: fancy cuts of steak, a la carte for everything including the side dishes, fancy cocktails and an extensive wine list, beautiful young women as hostesses and serious looking guys as managers. And all of this at extremely high prices. And all of that would be worth it if the steak itself was top notch. But it’s not: all four of the steaks served at our table were fatty and looked like they came from a local Ponderosa restaurant. The Delmonico was especially bad. I tried to complain but the noise level was so high and the ambiance so lacking that we just gave up and left, paying a hefty bill with a vow never to return.
We were seated right away after arriving on a busy Friday night. Attractive decor and ambiance. We ordered salmon and a steak. The rib eye steak was tasty but fatty and required some trimming. The menu described it as marbled but it could have been better quality for a somewhat pricey steak house. The salmon was okay though uninteresting. But it was a steak house, after all. The salad was very good as were the sides . Overall, a nice meal and I’ll be back.
Good food and wine selection. Waiter and service was top shelf
Food and ambiance was great. We sat at the Bar though and felt that the staff was not paying too close attention to us. Wasn't crowded but yet we had to look for her a few times.
We have always been seated on the ground floor but were brought upstairs to a large dining room this time. The noise level was off the charts but wen asked to be moved the staff immediately relocated us to a quiet booth. Overall we have never had a bad meal or lousy service at char, it is one of our favorite restaurants in New Jersey
Fantastic food and ambiance. Will definitely be back.
Considering the price level, the food is not there. First we started with the fried calamari appetizer which had undercooked piece of calamari in it. Dipping sauces were great however. Next the wedge salad was great as well. When it was time for the main event, excitement built. My sister ordered the shrimp scampi, which was not scampi. It was breaded with flour jumbo shrimp over some garlic scented spinach. My mom ordered the surf and turf. Hers was excellent. I ordered the large 16oz my strip. Steak was cooked well. However, both my steak and my moms filet were both barley warm when served to the table - so much for having a 1800 degree cooking temperature and timing the meal so it comes out hot. Medium cool steak ain’t enjoyable to eat, especially when it’s 44.95. The sidd sauces were great, but the optional potato mash thing with cheese and truffle was only so so. When we took some food to go, the server mixed up things and threw out half the stuff we wanted to keep. To add insult to injury, they charge for soda refills after charging 44.95 for a cool temperature ny strip steak. Who charges for soda refills today? Not even McDonald’s if you dine in. The whole thing was an experience I’ll never want to repeat and I’ll take my $300 elsewhere next time, like Ruth’s Chris, a real consistent steakhouse. The water feature in the front lobby was cool though.
Was recently there to celebrate Mother’s Day. Despite the crazy crowd dinner was delicious. Service was exceptional! We were not rushed which sometimes happens on busy days at other establishments. Not here. Our server was attentive, friendly and provided great service.
We arrived on time and our table was not yet ready. Staff was polite and pleasant. Already they were running behind. We were shortly shown to our table (round...very nice)
The restaurant was very loud and noisy ... maybe just the location of our table. There was much activity surrounding us but the server took a great deal of time taking our drink order and then producing the drinks and when we wanted to order several appetizers, said she would only take a “full order.” We said ok but were beginning to feel rushed and not too welcome.
Food was tasty but Luke warm. They began removing plates while we were still eating. now we were surely being rushed. We were celebrating, enjoying many drinks, coffee and desserts , it was a special birthday event and the evening was very expensive and very disappointing.
My husband and I came for our anniversary. We were sat at a table in the middle of the room next to a huge party of men. They were so loud we could barely hear each other. His steak was awful like biting into leather. We will not be returning here.
I come here regularly, but this was by far the worst experience. The waiter was rude, gave our table the wrong wine (which was $25 more) & then actually chased us down the stairs to accuse us of stealing his pen.
We were there for dinner for the first time for my husband’s birthday the other night. Our waitress was amazing, the food was delicious and the ambiance was beautiful but for some odd reason the general manger was sitting a table over from us conducting job interviews. Very distracting and bizarre to be doing this at 7pm while patrons are trying to have a nice dinner.
Char was kind of a second city steakhouse. The service was willing and attentive however the food was a bit off point.
Steaks were not cooked as ordered. Medium well was well done and medium was medium well. Sides were underwhelming as potatoes were undercooked, mushrooms were mediocre. Drinks were ok but weak on the pour. Desert was not memorable.
Price point was higher than the level of food.
It's a nice place and I was glad to try it out. Food was good. Very loud. For a group of middle aged women not the optimal setting for Saturday night dinner and drinks. Pricey.
A great place to enjoy some solid food and nice ambiance. Had some great house drinks there.
Everything was amazing like usual. The portion sizes are fantastic and our server made sure we had everything we needed. We will be back soon.
We chose Char to gather for the first 'guys night' in far too long. The waitstaff showed just the right mix of urgency and unobtrusiveness. The food was very good and the wine list had some excellent choices for pretty much any budget. Enjoyable.
Great service. Fantastic food.
Excellent atmosphere, wine list and even better Cowboy ribeye!
Would definitely recommend to others and would go back. Our meal was delicious, the service was spot on!
We split the steak for 2 and the meat was very tough. A little disappointed. Had it a few weeks ago and it was delicious.
Great service and delicious food, it was a perfect dinner!
Steak was cooked wrong. Some were wrong temperature.
Expensive and could be much better!
My waiter Kiérah was great are usually order the porterhouse for two I opted out for a tomahawk which is which wasn’t as good that’s why I put the food a little down otherwise pretty good place I recommend it
Had an excellent meal with a European colleague last night. He wanted a good American steak and was not disappointed with the dry aged NY strip. I got the 8oz. filet with au poivre sauce which was also excellent. We split sides of fries and broccoli. Reasonable wine choices as well.
Our server Nicky was very friendly and attentive.
The food snd service were excellent!
The portion size is good for two people.
Everything was great!
The oysters were perfect! Tawny our server was the the best at explaining the specials, aging process for the steaks, and specialty drinks.
I recommend this place. Expensive, but very good food he'd forget to bring drinks and didn't check on our meal after it had been dropped off for over 10 minutes.
I do recommend this place, I think we just happened to get a bad waiter that night.
Unfortunately, this upscale steakhouse was a flop. We ordered fried calamari with surf and turf meal. The calamari arrived promptly but was very greasy and so hot the breading fell off. The sauces served with the calamari were delicious but the calamari itself was not good. The surf and turf was disappointing. The steak was cooked perfectly; however the lobster was so tough it was hard to chew and cut. The mashed potato side was cold and gritty. Overall, takeaway, stick to the steak, skip the sides. I would not recommend this place
The food was delicious! The cocktails were unique and also delicious! The service was great. We had never been there before and our waitress Niki did a great job of explaining everything to us and checking up on us to make sure that everything was going smoothly throughout our meal.
The food was amazing, the atmosphere was great & the service was impeccable! We can’t wait to go back.
Great experience. Expensive but you definitely see the value after your meal. Food was great, service was exceptional, environment was beautiful. All around great experience.
Our meal, experience service and recommendation by our server were all excellent
Great food and atmosphere
Never a disappointment .......
Consistent quality and everything is always fresh
I highly Reccomend to all
Appetizers, Dinner & Drinks were great and our server Anthony was outstanding & Kind! Definitely a place to go!!
Char Steakhouse is one if not The best Steakhouse in NJ. the quality of their food is second to none. All of the servers are top notch and you are always taken care of.
Everything was top notch so it was little surprising that they charge extra for steak sauce. But again excellent service and meal.
