Char Steakhouse - Red Bank
Food and service was excellent!
We go to Char quite often and I have to say the food was not as good as it usually is. Their was 4 of us and two of the steaks came out raw in the middle. We sent them back and they came out burnt. The Mac and Cheese was not as good as it usually is . We were celebrating my birthday which the waiter knew. I had the brownie and the brownie actually tasted stale. I have to say for it not being super busy the meal definitely was not what I had hoped for.
Totally not worth the money spent. Kept trying to get us to order more food even though we ordered quite a bit.
Shrimp cocktail smelled fishy …girls and the front desk were rude…waiter was strange…the restaurant smelled needs to be cleaned has an odor
Restaurant was trendy and very lively. We had a great server named Liz. We ordered the porterhouse steak (46 oz) with creamed spinach and fries. Food was good but steak could have been a bit hotter upon serving. The food also took nearly an hour to come out so that may have possibly contributed to the mediocre temperature of the steak. Still a nice evening but there are many other steakhouses I would return to before this one.
We had a party of four for my wife’s birthday. First time for she and I.
Both my son and daughter raved about the steaks they had on previous visits.
My wife and I shared the tomahawk steak special with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. My son and daughter had the strip steaks. They said their meal was OK.
The service was great, and the food was good, but as my wife said afterwards, the steaks I make at home are much better than what we were served at Char. Same for the sides.
Best part of the meal: chocolate mousse cake.
All in all it was a good experience-not great, and not as great as some people say or as pricing would command.
The only thing that made it worth the price was not the food, but spending time together.
The ambiance of it all was beautiful and the filet with truffle fries was delicious
Food was great, service was great and everyone was attentive and informative. Good place to dine on a Friday night
We had a very nice dinner. Liz, our waitress, was a pleasure. She was very attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, an experienced server.
It was our Anniversary we had the Best service, best food and really great ambience. We have been to char three times now and will consistently come back. Cookie Jar Sundae for dessert is off the charts
Service was great, not too much but knew when to come by. In general the was good but expensive. For a steak house, the steak was disappointing.
Client has a good meal and a great time.
I feel the food was at best “ok”. The steak was fatty. I do not feel for the price it was a good value and will not be returning.
The service was awful. We sat for 30 minutes without anyone bringing us anything (not even water). A woman came over with bread after 30 minutes and a conversation with a waiter and seemed more bothered by us than helpful.
Server asked for our order and asked if we wanted it to come out all at once or in two courses. We said two courses as we were not in a rush and one was an appetizer while the other was the entree. He said okay but I’ll need this table in an hour because it’s a Saturday night. Made it very clear we were unwanted and ensured we felt rushed.
I understand waiters have tough nights and busier nights than usual but the experience should have been more pleasant considering the cost.
I was expecting top quality having visited the other location in Raritan. Bacon and Delmonico steak were both quite fatty.
Came for a birthday, was a wonderful time. Food, service, atmosphere - 5/5. Various seating options as well; we were in the dining room upstairs, a bit more quiet than downstairs/bar area
Liz our waitress was amazing! Such a great night out with amazing food
We ate outside … it was a beautiful night to celebrate my sons birthday. Appetizers ( seafood tower) meat and potatoes were amazingly! Tomahawk, rib eye surf and turf and lobster avocado salad were outstanding and steaks cooked to perfection. Sides of lobster Mac and cheese creamed corn and a brilliant truffle mashed rounded out a stellar dinner! Save room for yhe Bread pudding … an out of the park experience!
We had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary. Liz was our server. She was amazing. She was very attentive and very professional. The food was excellent and presented very well. The ambiance was great, the whole staff was very accommodating.
Had a great time my service was fantastic. food also very good I would definitely recommend this place
Service was excellent.
always a great time
Absolutely loved it here! The food from the appetizers and on was phenomenal! I highly recommend the cookie jar sundae at the end. The waitstaff was very nice as well. Overall, such a great experience!
Tomahawk steak and death by potatoes and absolutely must! So delicious you'll be craving it the moment you leave!
I’ve been to Char dozens of times and it never disappoints.
Sal, our server, was great and the food is always delicious.
Thank you for another wonderful dining experience.
Excellent steak! Glad we actually stayed to enjoy it as we considered walking out in the first five minutes. We have never experienced such a miserable hostess. She spoke no words… looked put off to have to get up and walk us to a table … in the darkest, furthest corner of the room…where she casually tossed the menu on the table and walked away .. barely audible saying “enjoy” with her back to us. Then came the bread basket. We thought we would splurge on a popover… and they were both overcooked on the outside and raw on the inside. We traded up for a stale baguette and dry focaccia. When we finally engaged with our server things got better… good wine (definitely limited list of by the glass), good sides and steak (although we both ordered the same cook and got two completely different steaks… I wish I took a photo). For a place that calls itself an American steakhouse, it was surprisingly mediocre overall.
The steak was cooked to perfection vegetables were very fresh and Elizabeth the server was very attentive
Not one employee had a mask on: hostess, wait staff etc. Our waiter was very friendly but the service was extremely slow. Our dinner order was taken after 45 minutes of being seated. Tables were also very close together. I could hear the next couple’s entire conversation. The food was good especially the dessert, but nothing blew us away. My fiancé chose this place for his birthday dinner and he left saying he was not impressed at all.
Our server was lovely. Our food was served in a timely way and everything was delicious.
Filet mignon doesn’t get any better than this. Meat & potatoes app is outstanding. Place “cake in a can” on the menu all year.
overall was very good. My only issue was, I made a reservation and got sat in the bar section. could not complain much bc i was 10 minutes late for my reservation. good food and good service though.
I was in Red Bank & decided I wanted a decent steak. I selected Char, where I’d visited for cocktails but never dined in. I expected the typical comfort of a high end steakhouse: dark wood, linens on the tables, a decent wine list and impeccable service.
I made a reservation on Open Table and asked to be seated at a table rather than a high top, which I was presumed was in the bar. When I arrived, I was inexplicably brought to a bare wooden deuce barside. I presumed the dining room was full & settled in at the cramped table which could barely hold my order much less the work I brought with me to review. My waitress was lovely, but my table was outside her assigned station in the dining room. She hustled from the dining room to me and even made drinks behind the bar. Why there was no full time bartender escapes me. She gave her customers her best effort but management stretched her too thin: at times I had to prevail on the busboy and a floor manager to get additional items & order a bottle of wine.
Imagine my surprise when I went to the ladies’ room to see that the main dining rooms were not even close to full. Clients were seated at large, linen covered table, the type I thought would be afforded me.
My annoyance grew, particularly when the only other table seated in the bar was a May/December romance in which I surmised the young lady was present only due to financial remuneration. I raised the question of my placement confidentially to my server who offered no plausible explanation & neither could the floor manager when I spoke to him.
I am a 59 year old woman with means to pay a pricey bill. I don’t traipse around in stilettos to garner attention; I dress comfortably due to my hectic travel schedule. I treat staff with respect & tip generously as I worked in restaurants in college and while obtaining an advanced degree. I won’t go back to Char until I am assured I will be given the same courtesy shown other patrons.
Our meal was terrific & the waiter was attentive !!!!
Would highly recommend Char .
Very nice staff, food was excellent. I would recommend Char to friends.
Went for my sister-in-laws birthday, and could not have asked for a better experience. Our waiter, Justin, was beyond attentive to us, the food and drinks came out in a timely manner, considering how busy it was, and everything from the appetizers to after dinner drinks was delicious. I was torn between the delmonico and pork chop, and Justin recommend the pork chop, and it did not disappoint!! Will be going back for a date night for sure
Just ok remember it being better. Service was pretty bad
We have been to Char numerous times. Our first experience was great, but unfortunately it has been down hill since then. Our most recent visit on Friday was the worst we've had. My girlfriend and I ordered the Tomahawk for 2. We ordered it medium rare. The total weight was supposed to be 42OZ. If I had to guess, about half of that was the bone and another quarter was fat. Realistically we probably had 10-12 OZ of edible meat. The edible meat we did have was more on the rare side and was a bit hard to cut even with the large steak knifes provided. We ordered Mac and Cheese and Asparagus as our sides. The Mac and Cheese was alright, but had a bit of an odd taste. It almost reminded us of pizza. The Asparagus was paper thin and all of the inedible ends were left on. Our Calamari appetizer was really the only thing we enjoyed. They sat us extremely close to 2 others tables, so close that I could hear every word of each conversation on either side of me. The staff was attentive and the service was good. Overall, definitely not worth the money. We wanted to continue to love it, but ultimately I do not think we will be back.
Excellent food and service. Come here for all special occasions!
Service was great!
