Char Steakhouse - Raritan Ratings and Reviews
Excellent steaks cooked the way you like it. Sides were delicious and big enough to share. Try the warm walnut brownie for dessert. As most steak houses, everything is a la cart but everything our table tried was great! They do have a 3 course prix fix menu on certain days, not on Sat though.
It was our first time there and we go out to eat frequently. It was a delight all the way around. The waiter was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and recommended a great wine! The food was really good. Portions were large but not over the top. Overall, a place we’d definitely go to again.
The stuffed lobster tasted very much like a whole lemon was squeezed on top of it. It was overwhelming and ruined the whole dish. The service was lovely and the bread delicious. There was a gentleman at the table next to us that looked like he came directly from the gym. Gross and inappropriate.
They will only seat two people at a table for two even though for the 2 1/2 hours we were there they didn't seat any table for 4 in our room. They sat us right across from the door to the courtyard and went in and out at least 300 times or more. It created a draft, blew the candle out several times and got colder and colder as the night went on. Tables for four were down the room and would have been more comfortable all the way around. Food was just okay but I must say the server was excellent.
We won a gift card and decided to try it for pour anniversary. While the food is excellent, it's so expensive, that its hard to enjoy it. The servers give off a very haughty vibe and room is pretty but not warm and inviting. We enjoyed what we ate but overall it wasn't a great experience and for that money, it should be.
Ok so I’ve been to Char a handful of times both locations. As always Food is great. Service likewise. Now they have a few seats by the bar area... not seats for a date, not a pleasant area to eat. While we ate we had the pleasure of seeing people stare at us while they waited for a seat at the bar. Louder then normal noise. Just not the romantic section of the restaurant. And they did have other seats available btw. So if you go on a date to this location and want a romantic setting request a table outside weather permitting or by a fireplace or window. This won’t change my thoughts of going there again as I know I will return. But I will make it a point to request to be seated away from bar.
Char is a constant go to for us and last night was the first time I was disappointed. Service was slow and non attentive. We ordered the seafood tower which he have ordered many times before. We asked to substitute some extra shrimp instead of oysters. This was met with a great concern. Please oysters are more expensive then shrimp. We were given no oysters as requested but one extra shrimp over the standard order. There are normally 4 oysters. There were also no clams and when I inquired. I was instructed there would only be two. Normally there are 4 if those as well. I should say we ordered for 2 people as it is priced per person. I am still waiting for my drawn butter and extra cocktail sauce.
I had the filet mignon bone in special and my wife had the crab cakes, which were both excellent as usual and expected.
We ordered the potato gratin and baked potato and were made to feel like carbohydrate pigs by our waiter Serge who insisted we should order a vegetable. He may have been correct but I didn’t need to be chided like a 4 year old.
I ordered dessert(sorbet) it arrived quickly but the 5 minutes to get a spoon so I could eat it was frustrating and the 10 minutes for a cup of coffee that should have come with dessert was frustrating.
I have eaten here many times, hoping it was just a bad night. But in a town with many options near by it may be a while before I convince my wife and friends to return to poor service for a 100 per person.
Char is a steak house. That being said, I have never quite understood steak houses. They charge you an arm and a leg for a steak then charge you another large amount for your sides. The cocktails were good but again, very expensive. I have had better meals and drinks for less in New York City. The ambiance is nice but your are either facing the parking lot or a freeway. The service was good - attentive but not intrusive. It seemed like mostly business people having business deal dinners on the night we went which was a Tuesday. My husband ordered a filet medium well but it was good more well and was dry. His sides were mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts with bacon which were fine. I ordered the seafood special of the day which was sea bass and it was perfectly cooked and actually came with cooked greens, tomatoes and cannelli beans so I was happy with my meal. All in all it was a fine experience but I will not be going back because it was nothing special and I can make a steak myself for much less money.
the ambiance and outdoor area is the reason to go, the food was okay, steaks overpriced. Go for drinks or happy hour or for appetizers to get the best value. One thing to note, the menu is misleading in my opinion, they list $54.95 for Porterhouse but it's for 2 so you must multiply the price by 2 - it does say priced per person but it's still confusing because you have to do the math which can be hard after a few drinks... lol. Why they don't just state $110 is misleading in my opinion. Lastly, their bearnaise sauce was not good.
We love going to Char for many of our special occasions. The service is always excellent. We have never had a server that wasn't simply pleasant but also extremely knowledgeable of the menu items. Each course is spaced so you don't feel over stuffed. Although you can always count on outstanding beef, the specials are worth trying as well. We try to go often enough to enjoy the menu, but not so often that it doesn't feel like a special evening.
One of my all time faves, although we had a very off night due to our waiter rushing us every step of the way (brought dinner when we are still eating apps, brought our check when were were still eating dessert, etc.). Usually a much better experience but the food never disappoints.
We went to celebrate for a friends birthday. We were seated promptly and our server, Dario, was wonderful. He was friendly and gave great insight into the menu and food. In my opinion, he truly made our evening great! We already decided that we are going back again!
Love, love the outdoor area. Love the fire pits and waterfall and cabanas.
Unfortunately we were offered the WORST table outdoors. We were not treated too nicely when we refused it. In the end we waited 1/2 hour and were seated at a slightly better table.
The food was good. Not fabulous but good. I would go back again
Dinner was wonderful - Our server, Serge, was fantastic. Friendly, yet professional. The food was great - for appetizers, my husband had the escargot - absolutely delcious, perfectly garlicky; I had the soup of the day- cauliflower with sunchokes - really good; and our son had the crabcake, which he loved. For our main courses, my husband had the cowboy ribeye and it was cooked to perfection; my son and I both had a pork dish from the specials menu. It was crispy on the outside and falling off the bone tender inside. To die for! We'll definitely return.
Disappointing. Been here too many times to count, but had been chosen other steakhouses because of inconsistent steak quality, but wanted to give them another try. The filet was cooked right and very tasty. The KC dry aged bone-in strip was cooked properly to a nice medium rare, but half the steak was veiny and therefore chewy. The other half - melted in your mouth with a great taste. If you want to charge these type prices, you need to have exacting standards on what you plate. The small things - never did see a manager (special occasion which the hostess heard us speak about), waiter never returned to check-in on our food (cooked to our liking,...) and last but not least - charging for a soda refill. Just charge me an extra dollar for my steak, but don't nickle and dime me for a $2 refill.
This place jas a bit of an identity crisis... you are not in 212... youe prices are ridiculous for the service provided. Food was good. Service horrible. Will not be returning. Left with a bill of 500 which i dont mind except the service was non existent from seeting.
I made the mistake of ordering the crabcake for my entree because I wasn't in the mood for red meat. It tasted like crab that came out of a can and was tossed with Stove Ttop stuffing. The accompanying corn that the crab cake sat on was definitely out of a can - unacceptable considering fresh corn is still aplenty right now. It was a very disappointing meal especially because it wasn't cheap. It was money wasted on a crummy meal. Maybe I should have stuck with the steak, but overall I was not impressed with this restaurant at all. It had a wet rag / bar rot smell to it. Though the outside area did look inviting and our waiter was very attentive. I would not go back here.
Would have given higher stars but waiter inexperienced. Third time at Char as food good as always. I had the ribs, HUGE rack, very flavorful and cooked to perfection. Wife had filet Mignon, great as always.
If a warm night be sure to sit outside, tremendous atmosphere.
Food was fair for the price. I want to be wowed for a dinner bill of 250.00. Lobster was tough had to be returned, steak was tasty but chewy. Guinness On tap was great but served in small glasses. Service was below par. Had to tell waiter to clean table when it should have not been necessary. Glad we had the experience but would not return or recommend.☹️
This past Saturday my husband, daughter and I had an 8:15 reservation. We were very excited to experience Char once again.
The valet was very professional, and the hostesses were friendly but informed is there would be a wait as they were very busy. Many others were also waiting for their reservation to be seated. Customers began to complain, and after 20 minutes my husband did so as well. He was told by a gentleman we assume was the manager that he would get us seated ASAP.
We were brought to a table that had a view of the outside fire pits. It was a great view! Our waiter was extremely professional and friendly, as was his helper. Our courses arrived in a timely manner and were delicious! Oysters, Caesar salad, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, rib eye, filet and surf and turf were all fantastic! Cooked to correct temperature, and delicious!
In addition to the delay in being seated for our RESERVATION, the loud music and din of conversation made our experience at Char underwhelming. Please address the acoustics, and sound system. The three of us couldn't hear each other at a small table for 4. Of course, after the room cleared the dining experience was enjoyable.
As someone who travels and loves to dine out, and thought your cuisine was excellent, I'd advise you to address the issue of reservations, music, and acoustics to maximize the pleasure of your guests' experiences.
We we made a reservation for 8:15 showed up about 20 minutes early and were told they were running on time. At 8:20 we went to the desk and said what about us, we were then told 20 min more because people were not getting up. I had watched a black couple come in after us no reservation and were seated before us. Really? We were seated 1 half hour after our reservations.
Then NO lobster bisque soup. We had come for that. Also the recommended wine was awful. At 13 dollars a glass unacceptable.
I think the very skinny blond needs a new job.
Wife's Birthday. We live local and have dinned at Char many times. My Wife ordered the Lamb Lollipops which are Tasty. Sides ordered Italian Hot Peppers, Maple Glazed Thick Cut Bacon (Very Fatty) and Loaded Baked Potato (Dry).
I have a Hit and Miss with Char. I ordered a Double Porterhouse. It looked Very Good at the table. The tenderloin side was soft and tasty. But, the strip steak side went down hill.
In the middle there was clearly a large tendon. This took up much of the strip side. I called the waiter and showed him this. He grab my knife and cut into that area and "all most" had his elbow in my face. 2 Large Veins were in there also. Let just say...My appetite was gone. The waiter removed the steak....I was done for the evening. He did comp the Drinks ($20).
Next time I will stick with the Cowboy Ribeye or Tomahawk.
