Char Steak & Lounge Ratings and Reviews
We went with friends for dinner on a Friday evening for a change of pace from our usual routine. We had dinner reservations for 7:45pm and we arrived a bit early for cocktails. Found a nice little area to sit right off the bar, no problems getting drinks from the very busy bar, and even though is was busy, the noise level where we were sitting was not overbearing. We sat for dinner a few minutes before our reservation. Assistant server arrived, introduced himself and provided water, then bread. Waiter arrive and introduced himself, took drink orders and reviewed the specials. We ordered so salads and entrees (various steaks from the grill)and a few sides which we split amount the group. While my steak was cooked perfectly, my wife's was slightly undercooked and a friend's was sent back to the kitchen. The rest of THE Group seemed plead with their meals. All in all the evening was fine, no real complaints.
Sorry to say CHAR was very disappointing. After ordering a red wine ( which was $16 for a glass; granted we did not ask, but perhaps a house wine or even the wine menu could have been offered, ) we three ordered salads and a companion ordered a soup. That came shortly and she said it was fine. But 50 minutes later we waved our server over to table and asked, just what is the problem with our salads? We see 2 other tables that came after us are fully served ( one table of 6). "Oh sorry, I'll check." 5 more minutes and salads were served. My beef tenderloin salad was lame to look at with limp greens and all the meat totally charred . I had ordered medium rare. I told server that it was not satisfactory and to tell the chef and the manager. He disappeared only to bring it ( looked the same) back in a few minutes. Meat was charred and rare on inside. The whole experience continued downhill. Not one apology from anyone until the server brought the check and said, so sorry. Thumbs down on this experience at CHAR at Strathallen. ( Missed taking pictures.;-(
We have been to Char many times for lunch, cocktails and dinner and especially the grand buffet brunch. We were very disappointed to find out there was no buffet. I called on Tuesday by phone to modify our number of guests and no mention of the brunch being discontinued, as were 2 other tables around us. Being December perhaps having the buffet until after the holidays would have been a better plan.
Our server was outstanding and very accommodating but we will not be back for 120.00 breakfast.
We had been looking forward to kicking off the holiday season with friends, but were very disappointed. It started off ok with a good soup, excellent bread and salad. However, we then waited an extremely long time for our entrees.
When they came, the steak and lamb presentations were very unappealing--tasted ok, but not even close to what you would expect. The sea scallop presentation was good but the taste was not up to par.
They were apologetic eventually and did take 25% off of out total.
However, it was not a pleasant way to spend our evening and definitely not worth it.
We made reservations for Thanksgiving evening. Char had a very limited menu which was unfortunate for some of our family. The restaurant's website was not working, so the limited menu was not online.
We usually dine at Char when we visit Rochester, but we will not be back.
I have brought clients here for lunch on more than one occasion. The food is fabulous and we have been able to conduct business and converse without worrying about too much noise. Also, the service was excellent from the minute we pulled up to the valet until my car was returned to us. Our waiter was attentive, but not intrusive-the perfect combination. We will be back again
The food was spectacular and beautifully plated. My husband and I both had selections from the grill, and they were perfectly cooked, with delicious sauces to accompany them. We also had their Brussels sprouts, a vegetable I’m normally on the fence about. These were astonishingly good. Since it was our anniversary, they offered us glasses of sparkling wine. When my husband said he couldn’t drink, they gave us complimentary desserts instead. All in all, a great experience. Will dine there again.
The host seemed to care less we had arrived. Barely acknowledged us for our 7:45 reservation. We had to approach the desk 3 times before we were seated 20 minutes late.
Our waiter was pleasant enough, not very attentive and mostly distracted like he wished he was somewhere else; although he did have 3 more tables seated at the same time as ours. (Why did they have us wait?)
Steaks were doused with the new, latest salty tenderizer we have been encountering lately at some steak houses around town( not all) so hard to say anything about the taste. All the sides were extra and not really enough to share; order your own! The fried potato cakes were the best of our choices. The risotto was tasteless and the baked potato was barely dressed. Steak arrived on a naked plate..maybe some parsley ?!!
Not the top notch place we had hoped for; but ok. They should replace the host.
This is the third time I have eaten at Char. On the 2 prior occasions, the food was the best I have ever had in Rochester. But on this occasion my date's scallops were cold and fishy smelling. Not the excellent scallops she usually raves about. I ordered the duck and it was tender and delicious, but arrived lukewarm. The baked potato was superb. Steaming hot and cooked to perfection. The duck came with wild mushrooms and they were exceptional. There was a large wedding reception taking place and that may be the reason for the cold food and sub par service by our waiter. Our waiter was not the best. He never asked us how the food was. And never returned with a requested replacement for my date's side dish which was also cold. But we had an exceptional young woman named Ashley who cleared the table, brought fresh water before we could ask for it and served us hot water and lemon for an after dinner treat. The Char is always noisy, but that is city life. I will definitely return.
Very disappointed. Have been here twice before and loved it both times. Big drop off this visit. Despite their 900 degree oven, our porterhouse was served barely above room temp. Sent it back, but received the same piece of meat in return only it was no longer medium rare. Will think twice about giving this place a 4th turn.
We had lunch here for my friend's birthday. I am vegan and would not have picked Char; however, it was my friend's choice and we really enjoy the ambiance. Also, I called ahead to talk about vegan options because there are none listed on the menu. The hostess I spoke with said the chef could do one of the salads without the shrimp, or he could do risotto. The waitress took drink orders, told us about the soup of the day and left us to decide on entrees. When the waitress came back to take our orders, my friend (her birthday) ordered the lobster salad in lettuce wraps and the waitress decided to wait until that moment to let us know there was no lobster left because they were changing their menu the next day and were getting rid of items. My friend was very disappointed and had to go back to the menu to select another entree. The waitress also said they were out of the salad I was going to ask for. So I spoke up and said I had called ahead and was told I could have that salad without the shrimp and the waitress said, "Well, we don't have any of that," and "Nobody told me," sort of abrupt. So I asked about the risotto and she said it would take a long time to make. And I reminded her I called ahead. She again said, "Well, nobody told me," and she went to check. She came back and said there is mushroom risotto and it would not take that long. In the meantime my friend had decided on a BLT and I decided on the risotto. The bacon in the BLT was thick sliced but very fatty and not very palatable and my friend ate only half the sandwich. The risotto, however, was delicious and I was very happy that the chef gave me that option. One of the first things a waitress should do is inform the customer if there are any things off the menu so the customer knows what to expect. But despite that, I don't expect a restaurant of this caliber to tell me they are "out of" anything, even in anticipation of a change in the menu.
Went to Char with my girlfriend for our one year anniversary. The food was outstanding, maybe a little on the pricey side but I suppose more or less comparable to similar restaurants in the area. It’s a little ridiculous that when you shell out $50 for a steak you still have to fork over another $8 for a side of veg, but again that seems about par for the course for nice steakhouses.
Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. Really the only complaint I have about the service is that we were left waiting for a while to get our leftovers boxed up, as well as for the waiter to bring the check and then to return to take my card. I’m willing to excuse that though, as there seemed to be really just one waiter and there was at least one very large party that he was tending to along with our table and all of the other tables. The periods we were left waiting I think were mostly just down to unlucky timing, so I’m willing to give the service the benefit of the doubt.
Overall it’s a really nice restaurant and we had a great night celebrating. They even gave us complimentary champagne!
It was our first visit to CHAR.. It was highly recommented by Friends and family members.. Occasion was A special friends Bday. Had reservation & arrived 30min early. Seated 45 mins late. Would have probably ordered an appetizer and glass of wine while setting in the lounge area as directed, but no one approached our table as we expected. We ordered steak (filet mignon & Rib eye)Baked potato and a side (Brocolini).. The steaks were great.. The Rib eye appeared to be a NY Strip steak but was delicious.. The baked potatoes were a little cold for our taste and we were not impressed with the brocolini.. The ambiance was excellent, the Staff was very attentive, and the food was good.. We will chalk this up to our first time experience and we will probably visit again.
I reviewed this expensive menu before making a reservation. It was my wife and l's anniversary so we thought we would splurge a little on that 36 ounce porter house steak for 72 bucks... I got to say, it was worth every penny. Our waiter Russ, was fluent in 4 languages that I know of and was very knowledgeable of the menu items as well as the specials the chef was serving that night. Being that this particular steak was like 2 inches thick, it takes a different technique to cook it rather just seer it on the grill. So, with that being said, Russ would show us pictures of our steak on the grill, and then on its top side right before it went into a covection oven to finish off to the perfect "medium" internal temperature. That piece of meat literally melted in our mouths...We got a king crab leg for a side.... wasnt too happy that its onlynone leg for 30 bucks! Whatever, like I said I was splurging... Maybe I havn't ate at to many fancy places... but this was the first place I beennto that serves that baby on ice! It was cold... wasn't to fond of it. Kind of used to a hot crab leg in melted butter. Excellent place. The only bad thing I can say is... I made the reservation for 7:45... we weren't seat till almost 8:30... I mean whats the point of a reservation if its not honored properly. Other than that... the place is awesome... I wish I had more money, I would of rented a room for a night cap with the wife.
The service was slow although there were plenty of staff. Our waiter kept telling us "five more minutes" for our dinner order. We asked 6 staff members about a gift certificate that Char was holding for us. At the last possible minute, someone finally found it. The portions were VERY small. We waited so long for our food, that our meals were overheated under the heat lamp. We ordered the special, then found out 15 minutes later it was sold out. I would recommend nothing about Char.
