Char is a hidden treasure, with impeccable service and delicious food.
Tried the octopus and scallop pasta which was a special and amazing.
I have been here several times with friends, with my husband and for a work dinner. Always a winner! The food is so tasty & creative (goat cheese & polenta croutons!), and as someone who follows the paleo diet, there is always something for me on the menu. The fish is always great. I love sitting by the fireplace. The decor is so charming and cozy. And the staff is always very attentive.
Went for Hudson Valley Week dinner 3-course special (yes Char, in Greenwich, CT, just across the border from Portchester, made it on to the Hudson Valley list). We were not disappointed as the food was special in its preparation and the portions were not "slimmed" down. Will definitely return.
Both the dishes we ordered were Excellent! It was a Saturday, so very busy and noisy. If it had been any other night and one of the wait-staff hadn't quit 30 min before we were seated, I think I might have given all 5 stars. Definitely want to try again on a different evening. Did have a wonderful and quiet lunch there on a previous occasion.
Excellent meal, friendly service, busy and deservedly so.
We were seated promptly. The staff was attentive and more than accommodating as we made many changes to the menu based upon our dietary restrictions. The food was above average and the space was industrial chic attractive. The crowd was very lively which can be good and bad. It was very noisy but as it got later and tables started to clear, the noise level became much more manageable.
Great food, great location, and a must try! Had the Southwestern Sirloin Steak and it was simply delightful!
This years occasion was valentine's Day with 4 other friends. They had a great 3 course menu. We have dined here before and Char always delivers.Quality food, great ambiance and awesome service. If you have not been here, it is one of my favorite restaurants. great date night.
Excellent food and service
Loved our visit to Char! Cozy and inviting atmosphere w/ exposed brick, ceiling beams and a fireplace. Attentive waitstaff with attention to detail and service. Our meal was delicious with well balanced flavors. Very happy with our experience here!
Excellent restaurant with friendly service. We go during the week when its quiet. Its way too popular on the weekend. Food well prepared and fresh.
Great service and food. Very unique restaurant. Try the char octopus appetizer! Delicious.
Char has an amazing menu of gluten free options, more than I have seen anywhere. Food was so tasty and service was excellent. Highly recommend.
Excellent ambiance! Phenomenal food! Outstanding service!
While it was rather quiet when we dined (it was a Sunday in January) service was great and the food was fantastic.
Weeknight this is wonderful. Food excellently prepared and fresh. There is a fire going and music not too loud, even a good playlist. Avoid weekends unless you can handle the high volume crowds. I will definitely be back!
We were there for lunch on a Monday (Martin Luther King day) so it wasn't crowded. The ambiance and food are unpretentious . The service was good and the waitperson was knowledgeable and friendly. On a frigid day, it was good to sit in front of a fire - albeit it gas.
Love the place!
Great food, fantastic service and a lovely restaurant, made even more charming by the roaring fire in the fireplace and holiday decorations. The bread pudding dessert is crazy good!
My husband and I love this restaurant! It’s our favorite place for every birthday and special occasion or for a romantic night out! Amazing food and wonderful staff
everything was wonderful. I look forward to coming back very soon.
Loved the octopus appetizer, salmon and Swordfish. Great service, warm atmosphere and our whole group was happy (large group including kids).
Get together with family from New York
Never leave review but experience was so bad have to. Dined with bf that has dairy and egg allergy. Restaurant did not know ingredients in their food and tried to serve him dishes containing milk. Server admitted that some items (bread, dumplings) were not made on site but shipped in. Claimed shrimp were dairy free but were brought to us battered. Had to send server back twice before he admitted milk in batter. Not appropriate for vegan, vegetarians, or ppl with allergies. On top of this tried to charge us for shrimp.
The service, ambience, and delicious food made for a lovely evening. We liked Char so much we purchased a gift card for our daughter and son in law for their Anniversary. The menu was great!
My Husband and I had a lovely dinner at Char on Friday Dec 15. The restaurant was nicely decorated for the Holidays and the roaring fireplace made it a very relaxing atmosphere. Our food was outstanding. I had the red snapper special and my husband the jambalaya which was a bit spicy but delicious. If you like mushrooms don’t miss the side order of wild mushrooms. Was happy to have a nice dining experience for under $100. Would have given 5 stars but service was a bit slow. Definitely will return.
First time at Char for my wife’s 40th bday and we loved it. Ambience was rustic and warm with fireplace. Food was great. Perfect night for a date or night out with few friends. Met the owner on the way out and it was clear that he takes pride in his restaurant’s. Only slight improvement would be that you could order a glass of wine from the bottles. The glass list could be expanded. And I would replace the chocolate cake ice cream dessert with a chocolate soufflé. Overall, would definitely go back and highly recommend it.
This will be a go to option for me when recommending an interesting alternative in the Greenwich/Westchester area. It is a very cozy scene with a warm and friendly staff. The menu invites one to try something out of routine but not in an intimidating way. I actually would like to try everything on the menu. Tasty wine and the same note for dessert. I leave here happy.
I was decorated so beautifully for the Holiday's made it even more festive!
Excellent food and service. Very festive for the holidays.
Char is always dependable and consistent. The food and service are always great there, and I I've never had a bad meal there or bad service! The ambiance is cozy with the fireplace, and the noise level is perfect... not too loud, but loud enough to know that everyone is enjoying themselves.
Excelent all the way around. We were a party of 6 and EVERYONE loved it. Great service too
I have been to Char a few times and it’s always a great experience. The food was excellent ( I had a delicious swordfish ) the service attentive and nice. The decor is comfortable and inviting. I was surprised it wasn’t more crowded on a Friday night. I think overalll it’s superior to a lot of other places in the neighborhood and the prices are reasonable. I will be back.
Very nicely done. Service efficient and friendly. Food was delicious and the price fix is a great value. We would recommend and will return
Nice ambience, good food, always something inspiring on the menu
Great food and nice atmosphere, a little price but very good
Had a wonder meal at Char. Highly recommend this restaurant!
We were greeted and welcomed right away. The service was excellent! I asked if my meal could be made gluten-free and the waiter checked with the chef and was extremely accommodating. The food was delicious and there were so many healthy options.
I would want to go back again when it's NOT Restaurant week. It was noisy due to being crowded with a few larger tables filled and loud. The service was very good, very attentive and I had seafood paella which was tasty but unfortunately the shrimp was overcooked and a little rubbery.
So would like to give it another chance on a "regular nite" and see how they do
