American

Char No. 4 is a whiskey bar & restaurant inspired by a passion for bourbon. The name refers to the practice of aging bourbon in charred new oak barrels, which gives bourbon its characteristic sweet, caramelized flavors and its beautiful amber hue. Char No. 4 features over 150 American whiskeys and serves a menu of American fare with a focus on smoked meat. The American whiskeys are augmented by an extensive list of whiskeys from Europe and beyond as well as a selection of all-bourbon cocktails.
Char No. 4 is located in a 19th century row house in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. The design environment takes inspiration from this tradition in its treatment of light, its use of color, and in its nod to the form and construction of whiskey barrels both within the water-jet cut pattern of the steel facade, and in custom designed light fixtures. A field of large cylindrical pendants suffuse the space with a tawny glow that sets a mood of sophisticated conviviality for both drinking and dining.

It's a shame that Char No 4 is now closed. It was my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, combining an ambitious menu with a great selection of bourbons. Their deviled eggs were a perennial favorite appetizer of mine, and their wings were also par excellence. The entrees were a good selection of old favorites tweaked to give a modern twist to each. For example the flank steak with arugula salad was always cooked perfectly to order, and the arugula seemed to have a nice smoky flavor to it. The plan cooked trout was another favorite when it was on the menu. As for the sides, their potato salad was creamy, had a great but modest flavor of onions, and wasn't overdone with relish as some places choose to do. The slab bacon with kale (sometimes Brussels Sprouts instead), garlic and sheep or goat cheese was another recurrent choice for a side/appetizer. All in all, I'm sad to see this place close, but I wish Sean well with his new restaurant in New Orleans, opening up this fall. I'll definitely make plans to visit when I'm down there.

This is a great place in the neighborhood. Brunch is wonderful and their bourbon selection is entirely decent. It gets a bit noisy in the main dining room, and their collard greens can be a little on the bitter side, but other than that it's a trusty spot!

The fried green tomatoes were great as was the chicken. My husbands steak was still mooing and even when the waitress sent it back, it remained that way. That was disappointing but everything else was good.

We were very dissatisfied with the meals on our last visit. I had the soft shell crab on a bun. The crab was really tiny and completely covered by a regular size bun. Usually when this entrée is served the crab is bigger or you get 2 small crabs. I'm from New Orleans which does this kind of food really well and I don't expect the same level here in New York but the meal last night was really bad. I was hungry a couple of hours later probably because I found the meal so unsatisfying. My husband had the BBQ entree special which comes with dessert. He thought the meat was dry and unflavorable except for the sausage which was very tasty. We didn't like the dessert either. Overall a disappointing experience. We come here regularly so we were both surprised.

I made my reservation on OpenTable two days in advance, and was psyched that I found availability for a party of 7. Our reservation was for 7:15 for dinner on Mother's Day, and I noted on the reservation that we were 4 adults and 3 kids - I try to prepare everywhere I go for the number of kids we have. The restaurant was not at all prepared for us, though, kids or no kids. We arrived on time and the host said, "We, uh, just have to put your table together." Almost half an hour later, we sat down at a booth with a small table tacked onto the end. Kids were starving, but it took another nearly half an hour to get appetizers - the ones they weren't out of. I don't know what was going on in the kitchen but the food took forever. My youngest fell asleep and the two older kids were in tears before dinner finally arrived, at almost 8:45 - we asked the waiter to just bring one of the entrees to the table in a carry out container. We didn't get out of there until after 9pm and everyone was frustrated. Normally I love this place but Mother's Day dinner was a total flop.

I had been wanting to try Char No. 4 for a long time and recently did so for Sunday brunch. The food was fine, but nothing special. While I applaud the effort to experiment with flavors, some of the flavor combinations just did not work. The service was slow and our waiter often disappeared for long stretches, and while other servers came over to check on us, they did not seem to have our order straight. And unfortunately, the noise level made it difficult to have a conversation across the table, even with six of us crammed tightly into a booth. The experience was OK overall, but I wouldn't be in a rush to go back.

Char No 4 has an amazing bourbon selection with over 200 + to provide to patrons. The bartender was highly attentive. The brunch menus were average. Nothing overly spectacular. I would definitely for a lover of bourbon.

The food was good. Appetizers meh. The pork cubes were unexpectedly mustardy even before dipping. We tried 5 different entres. The steak, chicken, shrimp, sausage were very good. The brisket was dry salty and screaming for some sauce. I was expecting a better menu with more of a homage to all the bourbon. Desserts were excellent. Bourbon whipped cream. ....

I went to Char for Brunch. I ordered the brunch special which included beignets, an entree and a beverage. I had the Chef's Breakfast which included potatoes, eggs, ONE strip of fatty bacon and a biscuit. My companion had the pancakes. I thought the food was just ok. It needed a lot more flavor. The biscuit was dry and I requested jelly. There was no jelly-so I requested butter. My friend's pancakes were a lot better. Actually the pancakes across the street at Cafe Luluc are awesome. As for the service, it seemed a bit off. A lot of people came to the table, but they didn't seem engaged. Our primary waiter seemed as he was somewhere else. The diners next to us also had problems with him. The last server who refreshed the coffee was a lot more attentive. The best thing about the meal was the beignets. I would recommend stopping in-sitting at the bar-ordering the beignets. I would not recommend a full meal. Bottom line is that I ate here years ago and remember having a positve impression. Has there been a retinkering of the menu or the chef?

This is our 5th time at Char no. 4. We love everything about it. The food, atomosphere, the people, and the drinks. We've tried different items each time, and have loved them all. Favorites include; the pork nuggets and deviled eggs from the starter menu, the ribs are delicious, meaty and juicy, and the desserts are yummy too, if you have any room left. We'll be back again and again.

We made reservations for Friday night and arrived early. We were surprised about how far back the restaurant goes and were happy to be seated away from the front door. Unfortunately, the back of the restaurant was filled with an extremely loud table that several folks complained about. Our server was as attendant as she could be given the volume of work she had. Our drinks were very good and we liked the snacks and appetizers and were very excited about the meal. After a long wait, our food was brought to the wrong table, luckily we caught the mistake and the other table hadn't touched the food so we were able to get our meals. The other couple, who had been seated a few minutes after we were seated, had to wait another 30 minutes for their food and they complained. Our meals were warm at best which really changed the whole taste of everything. It was hard to enjoy our meals on such a cold night. Bottom line, we will come back but we will keep it to just snacks and drinks.

Amazing brisket, my favorite dish here. Pulled. Pork was good but too much polenta and too little pork. Chefs breakfast was poorer compared to the other two choices. However everything was delicious. Great service though slightly noisy that Sunday lunch time. I've been here other times earlier and it's much quieter And nicer. Great bar at the entrance for cocktails or late drinks.

We went on New Year's Eve our table was in the back facing wall. We weren't given option , we would have not had a problem waiting for another since we were early for our reservation. Realizing it was a busy night accepted it. The menu was a price fix which we weren't aware of, we chose this restaurant based on its online menu which was quite varied. We called several time prior to arriving and weren't told of this, it would've been easier since one of our party was a pescetarian. The food was fine just expected more. Very surprised guess we caught them on an off night.

This was my second time at Char No. 4 and it wasn't as great this time, unfortunately. My party was seated in the back dining area which has not as great of an ambiance. I was also seated in front of a window that had a bit of a draft, which was unfortunate because it was cold outside. The food was great, but our server was a bit slow and inattentive. He also didn't seem to know the menu well and told a member of my party that the restaurant did not have a type of whiskey that we found out later they actually had. We had a good time, but I'm less enthusiastic about Char No. 4 this time around.

I like the ambiance, very cool spot. The service was good as well. The waiter was courteous and well spoken. It was the food and how presented that caught me off guard. I guess for the price you pay, I expected my ribs to be tender and not as tuff as they were. The mac n cheese was salty. Bringing me food in a cast iron skillet was a surprise but I guess I could have gotten with that. I wasn't presented with the rite utensils. ..a butter knife to do battle with the tuff ribs....smh. So to recap....for that price I would have expected my food to be a lil bit better. To much salt n not tender. Oh but my friends Brisket was good.

waitress was terrible. completely clueless . took ten minutes to get waited on (unless you count the 8 times we had our water refilled) she forgot my husband's drink. Took almost 15 minutes to get the bill processed and we might still be waiting had we not called her over at which point she looked for it --the bill with our cc still unprocessed in her apron while she wandered about the restaurant refilling coffee. too many good waitresses to bother going back for that experience.

We had a reservation but were still taken to some kind of a back room and had to ask to be seated in the main dining room. The food was great when it finally arrived. Appetizers came quickly but then we waited a LONG time fort he main course. Finally my husband got his and after about 5-0 minutes me and my son were told that our food had been served to the wrong table so we had to wait while they prepared then again. To make up for it they brought us 2 desserts without even asking if wee wanted them. There are so many good places around this area that I am not sure if I would go back to this place although the food was very good.

Char No. 4 serves a delicious brunch ( and dinner). The lists of wines and spirits are astonishing - specializing in whisky. They also smoke their own meats. The menu is varied and loaded with tasty, interesting entries. At brunch recently, I appreciated the low level of the music, which made conversation easy. I recommend this restaurant unreservedly.

Had a great dinner with friends at Char No. 4. Char No. 4 is a neighborhood favorite. Their meals are on the pricier side but they had their 3-course price fixe for Brooklyn Restaurant Week on, PLUS we caught the end of happy hours (ends at 7PM) and they offer a great deal on their whiskey drinks. As a table we tried a variety of awesome dishes. I loved the pork nuggets, deviled eggs, and the smoked ribs with collards were SO GOOD. the Smore pie was underwhelming. The drinks (whiskeys straight or whiskey cocktails) were all delicious.

I perhaps had too high of expectations for Char No. 4. As a lover of BBQ and bourbon, Char No. 4 has been on my must do list since moving to the city. Unfortunately, it was only ok. We got to the restaurant an hour earlier than our reservation and the hostess was so accommodating and welcoming. Honestly she was the best part of the restaurant. She sat us right away. Our server seemed somewhat annoyed by our presence and didn't seem very excited to be working. We received our meal and the food was served luke warm. I ordered the brisket and it was overwhelmed by the sauce. I might go back for drinks as my manhattan was delicious but there are many superior BBQ places in the city. This place is straight up mediocre.
