About Chapter One: the modern local
A modern local is a new concept that is in a sense, the evolution of a gastropub. A culinary-centric, Public House that celebrates it's "local." Whether it's the seasonal, local, farm-to-table sourcing of our ingredients, the history of the local area, or the local resident that feels their sense of ownership here. Chapter One: the modern local is a product of its ideals and creative style as well as its community and local history. We are humble servants to our guests. Our commitment is to treat every guest like family and ensure that you feel the heart of the pub every time you walk in the door. No pretension, just good food and drink and great company.

Chapter One: the modern local Ratings and Reviews
We were here for an event called Pork & Pinot! Pinot wines paired with various dishes that included pork. The chef is an amazing artist that uses food to compliment the wine or vice versa. I am so sorry not to know the.cjefa name but I am willing to say on record he is one of the best and most progressive chefs in the OC. I've been to many wine dinners at fine dining restaurants but this chef is great! Thank you for a lovely evening of great food and good wine!
Food was great, service was slow, and the over all vibe was loud. I had been here on a Sunday for Sunday brunch and if I EVER go back it will be on a Sunday not a Saturday again. I don't like having to spend extra for the parking because they ran out of validation stickers for the parking structure across the street. It was especially upsetting because my friend had called earlier that morning to confirm our parking ticket would be taken care of but surprise surprise when it's time to go they so easily say oh we're out of stickers until Monday.
Chapter One is a personal favorite of mine. Everyone is friendly and accommodating and the drinks are excellent. My girlfriend and I go at least once a week and we feel comfortable spending our money there more than anywhere else. We have built relationships with bartenders and servers and those relationships have gone a long way. I brought my family in recently for two straight weeks and they loved everything from the food and drinks to the ambiance. Rabbi Blue has become a friend of ours from our time there and its just a wonderful place.
First time dining here. A great urban vibe. Great cocktail list but minimal wine choices. The menu offers intering small plates, burgers, and large entrees. Generous portion sizes and a friendly, attentive waitstaff to serve them. Noise level is high, tho. We thought the food was well prepared. Only negative was the ahi ceviche was WAY too spicy. I am very comfortable with spicy fare, but this was much too much, and ended up not finishing it. Would definitely go back to this restaurant.
Lunch menu used to be far more interesting with a dozen or more main dishes. Options on this occasion were half that. The Philly I had (they don't call it that) was far below the quality of food that I have had at Chapter One on at about a eight other lunch occasions. The sliced beef was overcooked/tough and the cheese was no better than the nacho cheese you get at ballparks. I suspect they've had a business downturn for lunch and have had to cut back. Sadly, I'll take this restaurant off my business lunch options list.
I have been to this restaurant before and enjoyed it very much. However my group of 7 could hardly hear each other because the noise level was so high. The restaurant was extremely busy the evening we were there including a special group event that was right behind our table. I would recommend asking ahead of reservations whether there are any special events going on at the time you plan to dine.
Had a delicious time at chapter one Sunday brunch. Bottomless mimosas and included Peach pineapple strawberry and of course orange juice. Make sure you go on Sundays as you will enjoy the antics of Rabbi Blue who along with this accompanist Serenade a multitude of different songs and makes you the star of the brunch.
We especially enjoyed the variety of both small and large dishes. Our favorites were probably the roasted vegetables, brussels sprouts, and bacon-on-a-stick. Reasonable selection of draft beer, although a bit light on the darker stouts and porters. Great weekend spot!
Perhaps my expectations are higher, but I suggest that the team here has more work to do. The service was spotty, but not terrible. The pricing is okay,; neither expensive or inexpensive.
But the key is that the food did not impress. Ultimately nothing can work until this improves.
We had the duck fat fries, heirloom tomato salad, lumpia, and the Soufflé.
The soufflé was properly cooked, but vanilla is not ideal. Also, can someone tell restaurants to not drop all of the cream into the soufflé? Poor service. We asked the server not to pour it all in, but she was not in listening mode.
Could be much better, perhaps the team here just needs some time to work out challenges.
We had a group of 9 people and were celebrating two birthdays. The service provided by Abner was awesome and the food was excellent for gastropub fare. Very imaginative offerings. The food came quickly too. We also had the Vanilla Souffle and the Strawberry Cake for dessert that were so delicious. Everyone had a great time. Highly recommend this restaurant.
I will not be returning. The steaks were overcooked - we ordered medium rare and got well done. The brussel sprouts were greasy. The area to the side of our booth was filthy - blond hairs and dust - uck! The table had a sticky feeling to it and the place is super loud - hard to hear your conversation partners. Nothing special. I will not go back. Overpriced for what you get - the place looks dingy - maybe they should just be a bar - no food.
We were there for Mothers Day dinner. It was somewhat early and they were not busy at all. I had to ask twice to get all of our drinks. We ordered two different appetizers and they did not come out. Again I had to ask for them when our entrees started to be delivered. They brought out the appetizers at the same time as all of our entrees and one of the apps was ice cold so it had obviously been sitting in the window for quite sometime being neglected. The ONLY saving grace of the evening was the entrees themselves were amazing. My mother had the skirt steak, my husband and daughter both had burgers and I had their pork belly buns. Get the inside cleaner (high dusting, yikes!!!) and get your speed of service fixed and this would have been 5 stars. Even great food will not keep people coming back if your servers don't bring it out on time to your guests.
Food is always great at Chapter One, especially brunch.
I've had great service in the past but our waiter this time wasn't particularly helpful with our dietary restrictions. My daughter has to eat gluten free and there are not a lot of options here. We thought that she could build her own omelet with the GF ingredients they have, but it seemed that our server was not very accommodating. I get the feeling they don't like to make substitutions to menu items. He was friendly to us though. Ultimately, the food came out wrong so it was disappointing for her. Everyone else in our party loved their food. The stuffed French toast is delicious and so are the chilaquilas. Mimosa flight is fun. Better attention to empty champagne glasses would have been nice too.
Needed a good place for lunch on Saturday and their luncheon menus offered several appealing dishes. However, upon arrival, discovered they only offer a brunch menus on the weekend until 4 p.m. with primarily breakfast fare that we had earlier in the day so we went to a nearby deli owned by the same management. Had a good pastrami sandwich there.
My Second Visit.
Food was very good.
Must try the Scottish Egg... Interestingly Delicious. I also enjoyed Korean Tacos
I made the mistake of sitting in the bar area and a group close by grew louder as the drinks took effect.
Service was a bit off as it took almost 15 mins for my beer to arrive. I think only 1 server for the whole restaurant & Bar areas? He was very nice, patient and professional.
Yes, I will return
Had a great time celebrating my twins 24th bday!! Food was great, service was good, kind of a cool vibe!! The only issue was the chicken that was ordered on a salad never arrived and we got billed for it even after the server said it would be taken off. We didn't notice til we got home. Other than
This was my second time here; the first was REALLY good in my memory so maybe I was over hyping myself the second time around.
Food was tasty, plating and choice in cuts of meat (fatty/gristly) were questionable. We eat with our eyes more than we think, and some dishes looked downright unappetizing.
Cocktails were not as finessed as I remember. It was dead in the restaurant, two bartenders, and it took over 25 minutes to get some bourbons on the rocks. We had to settle for a more basic bourbon because our first two choices were out or almost out. Our apps came out before our drinks. No bueno.
Service, in general, just slow. We had a party of 5 and the restaurant was pretty quiet. It just seemed like the staff wasn't hustling, more like hanging out. At least get us some liquor to distract us from getting too irked.
Overall, wouldn't go outta my way to come back. The place seems to have downgraded since my first visit, which is a shame.
Made reservations for the two of us just before 8pm. We arrived on time and seated very quickly. Our table was at the end of a row of 3 tables 2 seats each. Immediately is was clear that we wouldn't be able to hear each other over the music and strange bass in the floor makes you think there is a club under you. Very cool decor. Dark lighting, but not awful. We ordered some drinks and some duck fat fries.
Now I understand a Saturday night is going to busy. You also had the downfall of some very large parties.
We sat with empty drinks for a long enough time that we decided to order a bottle of wine instead of cocktails because at least we could keep drinking. During the rest of our wait the table next to us who was delivered one meal and not the other nearly 25 minutes apart, and then messed up the first one.
Eventually 40ish minutes in our fries came and a minute later our food. I had the tacos, they were fantastic. Great flavor. Wife tried it and was immediately more disappointed in hers. Wife's steak for her salad was boring. Had no flavor. She said that with the rest of the salad was eh. Duck fries were delicious.
The entire row had a bad experience and you knew it. When you have large parties you need to let your customers know what the waits going to be. How you might make that wait tolerable.
Overall it was what it was. I did see some hardworking people, I just didn't have the pleasure of meeting them.
I had a great time with my friends for my birthday brunch! The bottomless mimosas were everything. My server (I believe his name was Andrew?) was very attentive to our needs. The food was great! I had the chilaquiles and they were delicious. Looking forward to coming back with my friends. I also highly recommend reserving a table for brunch on OpenTable because it does get a bit packed!
