Chaplin's Restaurant & Bar is a 1930's style Japanese Ramen House and cocktail bar. Chaplin's Executive Chef and Partner, Myo Htun, is originally from Burma, but was cooking ramen in Japan at a young age. Myo received a blessing from his mentor in Japan after nearly 30 years of cooking in Japan, to come to America and continue to showcase his authentic Ramen and traditional Japanese cuisine. Chaplin's Restaurant demonstrates the aesthetic of a bustling ramen house in Japan in the 1930's silent film era. There is also a large outdoor dining area that is dog friendly. This was our second time here, and we ate here on our last trip to DC over a year ago. The food was great both times. Excellent service and a fun atmosphere both times, too. The gyoza and the Stamina Spicy ramen were especially good. We will definitely return on our next trip to DC.

Really enjoyed our meal. Had ramen, gyoza, kakuni, yakko, and the buns and all was very tasty. The cocktails were great and really appreciate the happy hour prices on them and the wine. The staff gave some interesting recommendations on wine pairing that expanded our palettes. The music could have been a notch or two quieter to allow for easier conversations. Overall, a wonderful evening.

The ramen was not particularly flavorful. There was no depth to the broth. My drink, The Vagabond, was tasty and refreshing. The server, Noah, was knowledgeable and provided good service. The upstairs bar area can be pretty noisy since it’s such a small space. I’d go back for the bar atmosphere and maybe an appetizer.

We were excited to try Chaplin's after reading about it and went with six coworkers. They waitress seemed perturbed when we weren't ready to order after just sitting down. We asked about the paper menus and she said that they were out of date and not accurate. She didn't come back for a long time till we asked another server if we could please order. She finally came back and took our order and didn't return again till we were finished with our meal. Our food was delivered by and non waiter. Several of us had questions or food that came out with missing items. She finally returned long after we had finished our meal and then it took forever to get our check. The food that we got was just okay and I've had much better ramen around town. Im sure that post covid it's difficult to find decent wait staff but this is pretty ridiculous for the prices that they charge here. I was disappointed on so many levels with Chaplins.

Everything was great, but we expected heaters for outdoor dining in January. The blankets they provided were nice, but it was very odd to eat outside when it was freezing. Not a great experience and seemed verging on impossible to give a good score. The food was excellent as always, but it should be more explicit that you’re dining outside with no heaters in the freezing cold when you book the reservation. It was a very unwelcome surprise.

We went for restaurant week and ordered from that menu. When we calculated what was offered for restaurant week for $40/person against their regular menu it was a definite up-charge. We could have gotten what we ordered for about $7 less per person on the regular menu. This does not even include the $20 cocktail/wine pairing option that would be a good deal if not for their happy hour from 5-7 that is way cheaper than that option. The food was great and we loved the atmosphere but make sure you pay attention to their prices.

Located in the heart of trendy Shaw, this neighborhood mainstay continues to be very busy. In fact so busy and loud it's hard to hold conversation. We did not have their signature ramen instead choosing from their smaller plates. Dumplings were soggy and all the fillings tasted the same. he noodle dishes were similarly bland whereas the chicken katsu was delicious. Only the sauces spiced things up. Their homemade lemonade was perfectly tangy and not too sweet. Great place to meet friends for a few light bites and drinks but not a date night or business meal.

Came here to meet up with some friends and the experience was outstanding! Our waitress Leslie provided top-notch service. She was very down to earth and helped to cultivate the type of drinking experience you expect to have at any institution. Knowledge of the menu, stellar recommendations, and a great sense of humor highlighted our night. We tried almost every appetizer and a variety of ramen dishes. The chicken cutlets and gyoza were to die for. Definitely coming back here.

I made a reservation for 6pm for three people including my friend's nine-year-old daughter. We were sat at a high top in the same room as the bar upstairs. It was impossible to hear one another and the girl was overwhelmed with the noise from the bar. The drink I ordered was watered down and flavorless. My friend was served an entree he didn't order. At the end of the meal we were rushed out by the wait staff who were clearly eager to seat the table again. I have no idea why this restaurant was recommended as a good place to bring a child, but I have no desire to return with or without a child.

This is one of my favorite cocktail bars ever. Dinner here might be loud (my in-laws said they “felt like the oldest people there”), but the experience is high-class. This is the sort of place where they will come to your table to burn your rosemary garnish with a tiny torch and inject whiskey into your dumplings (our favorite part of the evening). For the price, the ramen portions are perfect and full of contrasting, playful flavors that make every bite and sip a joy. They were also wonderful with our birthday request, and surprised us with a small dessert that ended up being just as delicious as anything else in the menu. We’re already planning on a return trip just for the bar for the payday (whiskey) dumplings and a cocktail or two. Thank you so much for the experience!

Last minute reservation. Definitely worth making ahead of time rather than walk in seating. Food was great, ambience on point. Service on point. The drinks are tailored to make you want to eat more. We had the pork shumai, the karaage, pork belly skewers and edamame. We wanted to have a little bit of everything. The ramen is great and everything comes out quickly. We tried to different drinks, the Vagabond, gin-based drink is refreshing and we ordered seconds. Will come again
