Amazing food and service but what’s best about this cozy spot is the owner/chef puts his humanity in his food. You can taste his passion for his craft and his customers. Lovely man making lovely food and doing his best to ensure his guests have a wonderful dining experience. One of SF’s best spots to dine. And the wine list is also fabulous. Bon Appetit!

I've been a fan of Chapeau! since Phillipe & Helen opened a small cafe 20+ yrs. ago on 15th & Clement. It's evolved from a neighborhood favorite to Michelin status. What I love is its good food, wonderful wine selections, and great service all in a welcoming, family atmosphere.
The food and service were excellent. And while I enjoyed the boisterous dinner party atmosphere, fostered at least in part by the gregarious chef , some may found it too loud for an intimate conversation.
We knew Chapeau was good, but they exceeded expectations. Our party included a food reviewer/writer from another city well known for its restaurants and she was more than very pleased. All dishes were well prepared. Service was friendly and efficient. This was a Saturday night and they handled an overflow crowd very effectively. Because the dining space is limited the tables were a bit close, but not to the point of being a distraction. The restaurant was a bit noisy .. rather, one or two tables were boisterous. We have no hestitation in recommending Chapeau to diners seeking a solid and a bit traditional French upscale bistro evening.
Wow. You want a memory moment from sharing beautiful and tasteful food you may have never tasted before. This is the place to create that special moment in time you want to remember. One taste can transport you to what inspired that dish. Simply amazing experience in a very small footprint. Reserve the counter height tables for an even better experience. Tell them you are celebrating a special occasion and they will take it from there. Great wine list, the cocktails were amazing and every course was better than the last. Amazing experience.
I think the $45 was too much for the Early Bird Special. The meal was very good but not excellent for the price.
Splendid environment, wonderful food (delectable salade landaise, I had cassoulet with fall-off-the-bone duck and homemade sausage in a marvelous sauce while my spouse was entranced by her black cod) and artfully presented nuage and chocolate cake deserts. Service was impeccable. We haven't been here for a couple of years (had been regulars) but will be back sooner!

Slow service and limited menu.
Long time favorite but not any more.
What’s usually a fantastic dining experience devolved into a poorly executed cash grab. Got seated at 530 expecting the early bird menu and instead all diners were forced to have the “Valentines Day” set menu; of course there was no pricing listed. Bread took forever to arrive, the entrees were average at best, and our main courses took an hour to arrive even as other patrons who arrived later were receiving their entrees while we got our dessert. The icing on the cake was the staggering $120 per person cost that would have still felt excessive for the two of us considering the quality of our dining experience. I definitely do not plan on returning for major holidays. At least the bread was good (as usual).
Valentines dinner was overpriced and the service was slow.
Amazing anniversary dinner. The food was delicious, reasonably priced and the service was great. Perfect date night restaurant with an SF locals vibe.
As always, Chapeau was wonderful. We've been here a dozen or so times over the years. We have introduced friends to it, and they now also count it as their "go to" French restaurant in SF.
Chapeau is always fabulous! Only one easily corrected glitch: way too much dressing on the wonderful salade landaise--which nearly overpowered the gorgeous mousse and other components. But so easily fixed: just a lighter hand with the vinaigrette. Bouillabaisse was superb. Love this restaurant!
Chef is warm and friendly -- he greets patrons with a smile.
Dishes are artful and very tasty. We want to come back for the prime rib!
I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars! Every dish was perfect. The bread is warm and crusty. We had a surprise amuse bouche that I leave as a secret - but so good that I wish it was one of the courses! I started with the onion soup which was not heavy and had the cheese within the soup instead of covering the soup and making a mess. My husband had the salmon which had roe and crumbled egg with a great presentation. We both opted for the fourth course of diver scallop with mushroom foam and cauliflower puree. Again, a perfect combination and not the typical scallops that are heavily covered with something like balsamic vinegar and fried with a crust. My entre was risotto with hen in the forest mushrooms (lots of them). The rice was buttery/creamy and balanced the mushrooms. My husband had the duck and could not stop raving about the perfect cut (not fatty), crispy skin, and tasty sauce. I have to say that I win on the dessert - profiteroles with ice cream and a delicious chocolate sauce. My husband opted for a traditional french concoction - lots going on - he finished every crumb.
The other surprise was how reasonably priced the wines are and the large selection. We started with champagne and martini, then had a burgundy.
As other reviewers have also noted, the wait staff are wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed Sebastian and we loved that Chef kept wondering the restaurant to say hello and ask how everything is tasting.
Traditional French food. Prepared perfectly. The staff is very much like the professional wait staff you would get in a Parisian restaurant, anticipating everything we might want without being asked in many cases. Fantastic food, beautifully presented. Owner greets everyone, and also says goodbye at the door as you leave. A really special place.
They've been in business for 23 years... and they are still going strong... it means something. Every dish we had, from escargot, sea scallops, cassoulet et profiteroles were delicious!!

I was looking for a new restaurant to try for Dine About Town week, and a friend had been to Chapeau years ago, and wanted to try it again. Magnificent is an understatement. The food and service were impeccable. Our waiter, Sebastian, was so knowledgeable, kind, and professional (as was the entire wait staff). Our reservation was for 5:30, and the restaurant was full. I could not believe how the wait staff, chefs and owner had everything moving so smoothly. We both had escargot, and a filet. I had the creme brulee, and my companion had the french toast. Every item was as delicious as it could be. I can't wait to return!
Been here a couple times and each time has been a great experience. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is incredible.
I had the restaurant week meal which consisted of the escargot, filet, and créeme brûlée. Fiancée had the onion soup and the bouillabaisse.
Much of the staff are French and you definitely get the French restaurant vibe here. They let you enjoy your meal and company and leave you alone for the most part. But don’t get me wrong, they are attentive and helpful if you need them.
We did the $65 Restaurant week menu. 2 choices were given in both the appetizer and main course. I went with my wife so we ordered all choices. For the appetizer, the trio of salmon was great, the salmon roe enhanced the flavor of the salmon tartar. However, the other appetizer, the Escargot, the garlic flavor was too overwhelming. The main course though certainly had reverse the Escargot disappointment. The filet mignon was done just right, tender and juicy. The sauce gave it another level of complexity of flavor. I particularly liked the hen of the woods at the side dish. The texture was a complement to both the beef and the potato. There is one unfortunate part though. It has nothing to do with the menu. It is just when we try to taste all choices. As the other dish is the black cod, and the flavor is much more delicate. After eating a few bites of the filet mignon with much heavy flavor makes it tough to enjoy the delicate flavor for the black cod dish.

I went on rwstaurant week it was busy but it was the best meal ive ever had, the filet was on point, the demi was delicious, the escargot was the best, everything is awsome. Chef Philippe would often come around and ask how everything was, not many chefs do that. You can tell this kitchen doesnt just cook, they put love, attention, time and dedication to the food which make the difference between a restaurant and a fine restaurant, you can tell they love what they do. Thank you it was the best meal ive had in a long time.
My second time at Chapeau and I was as wowed as the first. Our meal was fantastic. We went for restaurant week and upgraded to the ribeye with a bone. So tender and flavorful. The service is exceptional and I love how Philipe and his wife make you feel so special. I highly recommend this restaurant for traditional french cuisine.
First time dining here and it was superb. My husband and I both ordered the higher priced restaurant week menu. The escargot was excellent, the filet was probably the best I ever had and the creme brûlée was excellent as well. My husband had the salmon starter, the filet and the French toast dessert which he said was also all excellent. The service was top notch. And the greetings from the Chef was a special touch. We will definitely return.
