My only negative about our dinner was that we ordered a bottle of wine and the waitress brought it already opened to the table. Not sign of the cork or the foil wrapper. No idea if what we ordered was in the bottle.

Wife and I each had the chef's tasting menu (5 course). Each course we excellent although the sweetbreads and filet with bone marrow (waiter's suggestion) really stood out. Easy to understand why it's still so busy after all these years. Ellen and Phillipe make everyone feel like old friends and welcome. A true neighborhood gem.

Classic French menu, well prepared, extensive wine list, good service... what's not to like... except the "energetic" noise level. Hopefully, when Chapeau expands, they'll do something to muffle the sound. It would be wonderful in a hushed environment... and it is reasonably quiet between 5 and 7.

I eat fish and don't eat meat, so I thought I would be very limited on what I could order here, but there were a lot of fish options and everything was delicious so I was happy!

Before the theatre we felt we would need something to eat, and were pleasantly surprised at how tasty every little thing was at Chapeau! The pate appetizer (on the house) was delicious with a wonderful mouthfeel. Not being too hungry though we ordered the escargot (fine) and scallop (really good!) appetizers, and split a entree portion of mussels (a little overcooked but still delicious).

We would have had more wine and a dessert--as we had plenty of time--but for our waiter's, Didier, attitude hautaine (haughty). Before we placed our order, I asked Didier if he like red wine; my next questions was going to be 'which is your by-the-glass favorite?' He retorted, "You do not order wine until you choose what you're eating." Whereby I said I just wanted to know what difference there might be in the several French reds by-the-glass ... i.e. I was hoping to have him help me by, say, comparing an Alsacian wine with Petite Sirah, or something. He just spied at me, as if challenged, and firmly put me in my place again, "You do not order wine until you know what you are going to eat."

Well, I had already ordered a martini so I just nursed that along the whole meal. My friend ordered a dry California red and I felt we had missed our chance to explore/discover more French wonders. Well, actually, I did think to order a glass of wine about 3/4ths through our meal, so I encroached on Didier again by asking him if there was anything by-the-glass (Chapeau! has a very limited by-the-glass selection) comparable to Gigondas? He looked at me like "stupid woman," snapped "I'm sorry I haven't been here for a few days, I'll have to check with the bar if they might have a half bottle," and whirled away. He came back and announced "the BEST wine we have ..." and I said I do not want your "BEST". Oh well, so much for trying.

I look forward to dining at Chapeau! again, for the food ... it's all about the food! (And, sometimes it's about the waiters.)

I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner. Ahead of time, I asked to be placed a little away from people, if possible, and to have a candle at his dessert. We were placed in a little corner, completely private and romantic . We had an insane dinner of steak and fish. It was very rich and decadent. The Fois Gros was fantastic, as well as the French onion soup for appetizers. The entrees were well spaced, and to die for. I was in a food coma for a day since I rarely eat that much. THere was nothing left on our plates. The steak was perfectly cooked with an amazing sauce. We got the bone marrow with it, and spread it throughout the dish. The fish, with the reduced butter sauce, was very rich and delicious. For dessert, we split a tart that was so delicious. And it came with a candle, as request! If I ate like this every night, I would have to roll to the car. However, for a special treat, we enjoyed every second of it!

I had a wonderful meal with equally wonderful service. I looked around the restaurant and knew everyone else also felt the same. This is not your frantic, latest hot spot kind of place. You come here to be treated special and relax.

They even remembered that my guest had a birthday celebration. Lately, even some "top" restaurants do not remember.

We found the Chef special Rib Eye steak, carved table side to be very poor quality.
Very disappointing.
And the potato serving was swimming in grease.
The bread had all seen better/fresher days.
All in all would not return.

We had been to Chapeau few year ago and were planning to visit again.. I have to say, it was a great experience. The food was outstanding and reminded me of french food in paris. The cassoulet, foie gras, desserts.. Oh yummm.. If you haven't tried chapeau, it needs to be on your list. The chef comes and meets everyone. We spent 2.5 hours there relaxing and enjoying our meal. Will go back again soon.

We came here to celebrate a birthday and our expectations were exceeded all around from the service, food and ambiance. It was karma as a parking space opened up for us right in front of Chapeau as we arrived. The hostess greeted and seated us at a very intimate corner table that allowed us to have quiet conversation and observe the orchestrated movement of the service staff. The choices on the menu are quite extensive making the final selections very challenging. In addition to the prix fixed Early Bird, there were also 3 and 4 courses, and Menu Le Menu du Chef to further tempt us. Through a combination of an assortment of items a culinary tasting adventure satisfied our palettes ranging from cauliflower soup, escargot, foie gras, day boat scallops, mussels with pommes frites, and a cassoulet. For dessert a very nice crème brulee complete with a birthday candle and chantilly meringue completed the dining experience of a very special occasion and most enjoyable evening. C'est Magnifique!

This is a great spot. Small restaurant with nice atmosphere. Chef greats you at your table, which is a nice touch. The service was very good, attentive, but not annoying. We had a chefs Prix fix and it was delicious. Perfect size portions, which were interesting and delicious. We were totally satisfied with every bite. This is more of a special occasion destination, rather than an everyday location.

Over the decades we continue to return to Chapeau because we know the food will be excellent, the service professional, the greetings from Ellen and Phillippe warm and gracious. They always make you feel you are a very valued guest, giving us extra desserts or this time an appetizer as well as gifts from the chef in addition to the amuse bouche. Ellen's wine selections are always excellent. Even when there appear to be no available reservations they always seem to make room for us. We love Chapeau and have brought many friends and out of town guests to this restaurant and they are always wow'ed by the experience as well.

First time at Chapeau, and we were not disappointed. We shared a 3-course menu with foie grad for appetizer, pesto risotto with scallops for entrees and of course the chocolate cake for dessert.
All the food was delicious. The check comes in a chapeau, d'où le nom!

We went for a Valentine's day weekend date, the experience was great. The services and hosts were warm and friendly, the menu was full of delicious options, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is not as quiet as some French restaurants, the ambiance is comfortable and attractive, but not particularly intimate. The quality of the food was top notch across the board, we had two different tasting menus, and loved every bite.

Great service and romantic atmosphere, but the tables were too close together where we can hear conversations from other diners who sat next to us left an right. A couple kept looking over my date's shoulder to see what we were eating and asked us if everything was worth ordering which was a bit annoying. Food was just ok because my date's filet mignon was over charred and over cooked (asked for medium rare), bone marrow was not seasoned, and the sauce on the skate wing was a little overly tangy. We did not order wine, but they seem to have an extensive wine list. We tried the veal sweetbread for the first time and we didn't care for it because it had a lot f sinew in it. Host was super friendly!

I have been wanting to try Chapeau for a long time and finally got a chance to recently on a Thursday night. I sat at the bar and received phenomenal service. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and it was delightful to hear the staff bantering in French between themselves and the surprisingly high number of French speaking guests.

I generally like light, crisp, white wines and really enjoyed the one the bartender recommended for me of the Quincy, Henri Bourgeois, Haute Victoire, Vallée de la Loire. I ordered the French Onion Soup as an appetizer, and it was absolutely perfect...flavorful, super cheesy, great texture and piping hot. They provided some tasty warm bread and butter before my entree came. The also served me an anchovy puff pastry, compliments of the chef, which was excellent.

For my entree, I got the mussels with frites, which were also delicious. Although between that, the bread, the pastry puff, and the soup, I had way too too much food in front of me and wasn't able to finish my frites or have room for dessert.

The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars from me is they don't seem to have any commitment to using organic ingredients, which is important to me (especially in my meat consumption, which is why I didn't go for the Filet Mignon instead of the mussels).

Note: Reservations are strongly advised for this place since it's quite popular.

We had meant to dine here last year and never made it. I'm glad we made the decision to come here for our third anniversary. We arrived early and had a seat at the bar. The owner/head chef came by to welcome us and wished us a Happy Anniversary. As we had an early reservation, they allowed us to choose our table. The waiter was very nice and very helpful with his suggestions. The menu offered a lovely variety without being over the top. The wine list was extensive and well-matched to the food. Our oyster starter was perfect. We chose the three-course meal and was quite impressed with the flavours and presentation of each of our dishes. Everything was unique, exceptionally well prepared and absolutely delicious. The dessert course was the perfect finish and again the waiter's suggestion for dessert wines was spot on. We will definitely return to celebrate another special occasion.

We would dine here more often at a lower price, but for us it's THE place to go for special occasions.
Over the years the proprietor has steadily improved the food, the menu, and the wine list, and now he even reminds you over and over of your reservation before you even get there. We found the wait staff attentive and they even seemed to enjoy their work. If the price is too high, try the early bird menu, but you can't get it on Friday or Saturday.

This was our 2nd visit and the service was very slow, so it was a frustrating and disappointing experience. There seemed to be plenty of staff waiting on the tables. Appetizers were good, the Cassoulet was dry, lambshanks were a bit salty & overdone. We waited way too long for dessert and nearly got up to leave. Very disappointing since this is a neighborhood place.
