Classic style reminiscent of a Parisian restaurant. The service and ambiance are what you would find at a more expensive white-tablecloth restaurant and the food is a bargain.

Chapeau Ratings and Reviews
While the $55 3-course menu is a good value, the food comes across as tired and uninteresting. The only dish (out of 6 served between the two of us) that we really liked was the monkfish, served with white beans and shrimp - it had character and texture. Scallops in the appetizer were very good, but the accompanying risotto lacking in that requisite balance between creaminess and chewiness. The deserts were a total loss, both cloyingly sweet, without any redeeming quality to them
This restaurant is one of the best kept secrets of San Francisco. Chef-Owner Phillipe is not only a gracious host but a superb chef. I always ask him to select the wine for us and he only picks winners and yet not expensive. If this place was downtown, the prices would be double. I eat there whenever I am in San Francisco. It is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world.
We finally decided to try Chapeau for a change since we wanted a French meal for our special occasion.
Our server was welcoming and efficient as were the assistants. We chose the $55 prix fixe menu. Everything was quite tasty and cooked well. From the onion soup, escargots, mussels, filet mignon, pork tenderloin, and bouillabaisse. We were highly satisfied with our meals with the bouillabaisse being a standout since the broth was so fragrant and flavorful.
Only tiny negative point was when the server asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and we admitted that we were we were only given a lit candle in a grape; this accompanied the creme brulee. Usually when a restaurant asks if one is celebrating a special occasion, well, they give a complimentary dessert or disgestif. Well, no matter, we still enjoyed our meals here.
Some things about this restaurant could be improved- service was staggered, wait time for food was long, and it is a little jammed- the people sitting next to you are literally RIGHT next to you. But the food was AMAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZINNNNG. The food alone made me forget about the other stuff and still give it a 5 star review.
We have been going to Chapeau for at least 15 years. It is one of the best French restaurants in California. We live is So. Cal and every time we decide to visit the San Francisco area the 1st thing I do is to make reservation at Chapeau. We have never been disappointed. The food can compete with any place in France (where we often travel). And, the chef is wonder and so welcoming!
After living in France for over 10 years, sometimes I want to relive my Parisian adventures. I don't crave frou-frou, I crave good, solid French food.
Enter Chapeau!. This intimate restaurant is on my shortlist of French restaurants in SF. Good. Solid. Food.
Add on top of that the friendly staff and wonderful wine list, then you have yourself a lovely, lovely evening.
Very welcoming and attentive staff. Nice atmosphere and solid menu. Did the 4 course menu and enjoyed all of my choices, as did my fellow diners, except for one person's pork tenderloin was quite dry. They quickly apologized and offered another entrée/removed the cost/provided an extra dessert.
My boyfriend and I went for an early anniversary dinner and it was FABULOUS. They make you feel so welcome (the chef still meets you at the door!), delicious food, wonderful service....it was really wonderful. EXCELLENTLY prepared food. Classic French dishes that are very, very well done. I hadn't been since 2008-I loved it then, and I'm so happy that the restaurant has done so well. We loved it!!
This resturant has never failed to meet high expectations. The owner is always minding the store and has a wonderful team who are committed to customer service that combines helpful suggestions with a desire make you feel welcome to try something new to taste. It’s our “Go To” spot for just two or eight.
Great food visually presented with artistic creativity; not fussy but eye appealing. Very attractive fixe price choices, with optional upgrades. Service was prompt and courteous. This is a fine example of a french bistro. It's lasted for many years for patrons and if you visit, you'll understand why. Our hat's off to Chapeau!
Great traditional French menu with outstanding sauces and preparation. Friendly service. Customers are treated as special guests. We both ordered the pork loin which came with
great sauce and sides. The portions were so generous that we ended up taking portions
home wrapped in a silver aluminum foil basket. We have never disappointed at this great
well established gem.
This place is absolutely wonderful! The food is so good, the service with a smile and genuine. It is a treat to have it in our "hood" but its worth the drive for anyone to come to the Richmond district. Phillipe the chef/owner comes by and makes you feel right at home every time! 5 Stars all the way.
