Classic style reminiscent of a Parisian restaurant. The service and ambiance are what you would find at a more expensive white-tablecloth restaurant and the food is a bargain.

Chapeau Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic dinner, with a wonderful wine suggestion from the waiter. Food was delicious - prix fixe menu was not really "fixed" per se, but basically you can choose anything off the menu! Very flexible! Food was well-prepared, beautiful, delicious, and the chef came out to thank us for coming, all in all a wonderful experience!
Took the girlfriend here for her birthday. I had mentioned in advance that my girlfriend is a Pescetarian and the restaurant was very accommodating.
The food was excellent, but their service is what shined the most. The entire staff were attentive throughout our meal and the waiter was extremely friendly. The chef came by personally to greet us as well.
We will definitely be back!
We were celebrating our January birthdays and wanted French cuisine. Chapeau offers a 3- course & 4-course menu or a la carte. It's a small, intimate restaurant, but lively--some couples, families with children, & friends celebrating. We both had the duck entree (leg & breast)-- delicious & a good size portion. For appetizers, my friend loved the escargot; the salmon trio was very good. Varied dessert menu--tough to choose. We enjoyed the special French toast & profiteroles. Service was excellent with birthday candles on our desserts. The only drawback to this restaurant is tough to find street parking, but worth it. Allow plenty of time to find a spot.
Chapeau is definitely on my going-back-every-year list. I came to Chapeau for Restaurant Week 2 years ago, and was deeply impressed. This year it was even better! Although I don't normally like pork, the bacon wrapped pork loin is the highlight of menu. It was so juicy and tender that I will keep remembering it until I come back next time!
The hostess named Lulu (not sure how to spell) was not welcoming at all.
I made a reservation 2 weeks before and she gave me a high-top table right next to the entrance. (The reservation was at 9pm in the middle of January in SF. It was pretty cold.)
There were 2 more high-top tables right next to the table she gave to us and both of them were empty but Lulu kept insisting that it was the table I reserved from OpenTable.
They all looked the same but she said the table next to the entrance was THE TABLE I reserved through OpenTable. I believe there is no option to choose a specific table.
I had such a high expectation about Chapeau! and she just ruined the mood of everybody.
The server was welcoming and he made us feel better about the restaurant.
Our dinner at Chapeau! Was the absolute best. I have no idea how I have lived in SF for nearly 10 years and I’ve never dined at this hidden gem. Great food, even better service. Custom wine pairings, amuse bouche, perfectly cleared table between every promptly delivered course... I can’t wait to go back!
Chapeau is a great neighborhood restaurant. The traditional French dishes are many and it's difficult deciding what to order. Our group of four ordered elegant foie gras, gorgeous salads, plump mussels, meaty cassoulet, silky bouillabasse, delicious monk fish, fluffy profiteroles. We included inviting glasses of rose, viongnier, sancerre and burgundy. Service was friendly and honoring. The gray walls, white table cloths and roses give a special feeling. We can hardly wait to go back.
Beautifully executed classic French technique, with a local twist. The chef has the ability to create wonderful flavors with a deft hand, Knowing when to hold back so as to not overpower delicate ingredients. This shows the difference between a good chef, & a great one.
Loved that the food, wine and service was fantastic at this neighborhood restaurant! Also nice to have the chef come out to check on each table and thank us for having dinner at his restaurant. We were not rushed at all and were able to make special requests that were not at all discounted!
Chapeau is an upscale French Bistro. Prix Fixe menu choices allowed for the varing tastes of our group. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but the menu allows the diner the ability to order a wonderful dinner that will not break the bank. Full bar and a wine list with many wines from France. We will return.
Food was unimaginative, and the flavors were very conflicted instead of complimentary. Highly overpriced for the quality of ingredients. They're serving up very basic french food, but doing it all wrong. I suggest they go back to their roots, and cook standard french fare (which is delightful), or dig deeper into the experimental cuisine they are attempting to prepare, but failing to deliver something of interest
Have had meals here quite a few times and it is always impressive. Very fair pricing for the quality of food, the setting and the experience. Everyone I have brought here has always been incredibly pleased. The couple who own and operate this restaurant are gems themselves, every visit adding to and improving the pleasure of dining here.
