Absolutely wonderful restaurant, service and delicious food. Highly recommend this for everything from
Casual dinner out to a special celebration. Phillip and his staff make you feel right at home.
as usual always pleased with the service and the food. and most of it all, Phillippe always maintained a welcoming spirit
Excellent food. The owner and Ellen are so friendly and welcoming
Food was very good and service was excellent as always.
Delicious food. Owner chef very friendly. Will definitely be back.
Chapeau went above and beyond with my party. The chef gave me a special treatment with a desert out of the menu which was a blast! We definitely had a great time. The food there is amazing and I highly recommend the restaurant.
The food is delicious! And the service is both excellent and very warm. The owner and his wife are present, making sure that everyone is happy and satisfied with their meal. They know many regulars and are very welcoming to new customers. Eating at Chapeau is a very enjoyable experience from start to finish.
The service at this restaurant is exquisite. Unfortunately the cassoulet was very disappointing. It consisted of very dry duck and a couple of pieces of sausage and the rest was white beans. The filet mignon however was excellent as were the escargot.
Absolutely amazing food and atmosphere. Highly appreciated!!!
This is an authentic French food restaurant, and it’s very delicious. The ambiance it’s poor when sitting outside. The service could be better, we waited a long time to get the check.
My first time in a restaurant in 15 months. The owner was fantastic and I was excited to experience the ambiance of a special meal. The main waiter was overwhelming under
performing. He did not make men comfortable. Literally, I was offended by a lack of welcoming spirit. Everything was difficult. He did not seem to have any desire to connect. He did not make us feel important. I left the worst tip in years, and that was difficult because I know the tips are shared with staff and the staff was very gentile.
I would not recommend this experience to others.
Very friendly owner/Head Chef. Cozy small atmosphere. The food was very well presented and flavorful. The Sauces were delicious as you would hope in a French Restaurant. The desserts were excellent also. Price and Quality were very good
We have eaten here before multiple times and have had good experiences so it was all the more disappointing to feel so ignored. Our reservation was for 800 pm on Sunday. We arrived a few minutes early but were not seated until 840. Certainly this was not entirely the fault of the restaurant as some prior parties most likely lingered. Once seated it took quite some time for the waiter to come take our order. While a non hurried experience is part of this restaurant, one would think that when a party of 4 has been standing on the sidewalk for 45 minutes that maybe a little more attention was warranted, especially as many other groups were in the process of departing. A small gesture such as a glass of wine or a complimentary appetizer would have gone a long way. In addition, when making a reservation on Yelp the site asks if this was a special occasion— it was our 29th anniversary. What is the point of asking if there is no acknowledgement of this by the staff. I’ve lived in the Richmond District my entire life and always try to support neighborhood small businesses and restaurants such as Chapeau. I doubt I will ever return. I can accept waiting but the overall experience of neglect or indifference is a deal breaker when there are so many other options in the city.
This was my first experience at Chapeau. The chef is the one who greeted and sat us, and we didn't really have a consistent server once seated. The first server we had was tall and barely spoke, felt a little like he didn't want to be there or maybe he just didn't want to serve us. The other wait staff were super nice and helpful though. The food was spectacular, I have never had such delightful delicacies all around. The appetizers were plentiful, had a variety to choose from, same with entrees and dessert. I highly recommend the tomato bisque and filet mignon. I visited for my birthday and they brought out a plate with a candle for me, made it feel so much more special!
Very pleasant evening with friendly staff. I will look forward to visiting again.
Good food as always. A bit cold due to extra ventilation, service good but a bit slow. I think they were short staffed. Would recommend as they will pick up their game as SF slowly re-opens.
I came to Chapeau for my first dinner out since the pandemic started for my birthday. I was not disappointed. Everything was perfect and it felt very safe. I even had a special table side visit from the Chef. Truly a wonderful evening.
The staff was very kind and considerate! They wore masks, were all vaccinated, and were happy to help. Very great experience, would recommend to anyone!
Arrived very early and was still seated. French onion soup and cassoulet were outstanding. We ordered alacarte but waiter charged us for one price fix dinner to save us a few dollars.
The food is amazing. One of the best onion soup i had for some time. Warm bread, filet mignon was well prepared and sauce was well prepared with mushroom and tiny potatoes i. The sauce. The french toast for dessert was not too sweet and fabulous. I was already thinking which one of my friends i can bring to savour this food again.
The only thing is the cold because of covid outdoor dining but that has nothing to do with restaurant or food.
Best Bouillabaisse I've ever had!
The head waiter was not welcoming. Although the other waiters and the owners were pleasant, the attitude of the head waiter put a damper on over 52nd wedding anniversary.
Delicious food, fabulous service and enjoyed speaking with the chef. He bakes the bread and makes the ice creams in house. The cassoulet, onion tart, lovely salads and desserts were yummy. Wonderful evening. Chilly outside but we will return SOON!
Chapeau is one of our go to neighborhood restaurants. We haven't dined here since COVID, the person who waited on us was new and was not very attentive.
Overall the food and the great, Philippe and Ellen are aways very gracious and welcoming!
This was our first dining out experience since March 2020. We chose Chapeau because of our memories of its reliably superior waitstaff, great food, very good wine list and quaint decor. We were not disappointed. We arrived early and the hostess was kind and accommodating as we waited for the restaurant to open. Chef Philippe Gardelle stopped by our table twice to thank us for our support and to see if we were enjoying our dinner. We ordered the beet salad and tomato soup; cassoulet and bouillabaisse; and creme brûlée and apple tarte. The bottle of Lekker cab was an outstanding pairing with our exceptional entrees. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, thoughtful and responsive. We left Chapeau knowing we had re-emerged from the pandemic shutdown with a positively memorable dining experience at one of our favorite San Francisco restaurants.
Outstanding as always from start to finish. A neighborhood gem.
One of our favorite restaurants. The food never dissapoints; special that Phillip takes time to say hello; Ellen is always gracious, welcoming and accommodating.
Great way to. celebrate friends’s birthday and a chance to experience indoor dining in SF
First time customers. Great food and service. Will definitely return.
Charming! Delicious! Warm, welcoming staff. It could not have been a more perfect!!
Great dinner. Food was delicious and at a very fair price. Service was great as well.
Great food. Just like being in France.
Owner is friendly brings back memories
Of a kinder San Francisco. The French
Wine list is excellent. Formidable !!
It’s was freezing cold inside. The service was mediocre. They advertised $65 per person pre fix but bill came to $275. Hated it
Great food and service, but inside the restaurant was extremely cold. We knew the fog would be in, and came armed with ski jackets and liners, but the sole curtain between the outside and inside was usually had a one to two gap to enable the servers to take care of the diners sitting outside in the parklet. So my advice is to really bundle up when dining at Chapeau! when the weather forecast is for fog-- as it frequently is, this being San Francisco -- and the restaurant is still using the parklet for some outdoor dining.

Great layout for outdoor dining but my table at the end did not feel any heat from the heat lamp. Other than that, delicious food worth having again and again.
We had a great night at Chapeau . Philippe has been baking his own bread since the pandemic started which was awesome
I had bouillabaisse which was delicious
Great food and great service. We will be visiting again.
Everthing at Chapeau was perfect! After a warm welcome we sat our table . The cocktels were really good but the food was superb. We had onion soup and one of their salads, and then filet and seafood cacerole.
Everything was cooked to perfection, we will repeat for sure!
