Chalkboard was a fun, eclectic place for dinner. The food was good - but not great. We ordered the chicory salad which was warm with butternut squash & a lot of vinegar. We had ordered butternut squash next but canceled that & substituted the sunchokes. They were ok. We had the shrimp with pasta. The pasta was more like a German spaetzle, rather than the pasta I'm accustomed to having. It was fair. We also ordered the scallops, which were very good. I've eaten in tapas restaurants many times & this is the first time I felt like the different courses didn't complement each other at all. We loved the overall feel of the restaurant. We won't be going back.
This was our first experience at Chalkboard and what a find. This was a special business dinner enjoyed by everyone. We chose to do a tasting menu so were able to enjoy a wide variety of menu items, each one more delicious than last. A very nice wine menu as well. Highly recommend Chalkboard for any occasion.
Chalkboard came highly recommended to our group. The restaurant was nicely decorated, the service was good, and the food was sadly fair. I have never left a bad review, however we were very disappointed in the fishy and tangy squid ink pasta and the overcooked sliders. None of the other dishes left us wanting for more.
It was very noisy and very hard to hear my spouse. The food is served in small portions to share. If you have never eaten like this I would try it because it is a great way to eat and try a different variety of food.
It is a shame it was so noisy I am not so sure I would recommend.
We've been to Chalkboard before and really enjoyed it. But this may have been the best visit ever. Our waitress was so very helpful, making sure we didn't order too much. We started with a shotglass of tomato soup topped with Dungeness crab. There were 6 pastas on the menu and we decided to do the "tasting menu" for $65. We started with a fig Panzanella salad and then the pastas came, 3 at a time. There was plenty in the bowl for each of the 4 of us to have a good taste. I don't usually like squid ink pasta but it was delicious. The cocoa pasta with duck confit was like dessert. But I think our favorite was the Ricotta and Greens Gnudi. For dessert we shared a Candy Bar (always my favorite) and a Mud Pie. We were 4 very happy diners!
Shane continues to keep the standards high at Chalkboard and to keep introducing new items on the menu. We miss the old wine flights, but totally get why the new method of constructing your own makes sense. Allows for great variety. Still our favorite on so many levels.
i read such good things about this spot - took a group of friends and was very disappointed. i thought the food was - well - trying to be so gourmet that it really just was kind of weird... everything was so over seasoned that this may have been the main problem. if you like salt you'll love this place. the pasta was interesting - and in some cases tasted pretty good, but that was overshadowed by things like the vegetable dishes and the salads.... the tomato salad with avocado would be very good - and was actually the thing i liked best - if it weren't salted within an inch of it's life. the waiter for our table was completely not interested in us. he refused to say anything really at all - and when he surprised us with a candle on dessert - just sort of threw it on the table and ran off. no - "happy birthday" or "compliments of the chef" or anything like that.... i was actually embarrassed that i had chosen this place for all my friends. terrible food... terrible service. i gave it a "fair" rating because the decor is so nice, and the room was bustling which i think is a plus....
We had heard about this gem of a place and made reservations well in advance of our trip to be safe. The food overall was delightful and each plate though small had a lot of big flavors. Come here expecting to share, as you will want to try at least a bite of every dish. The heirloom salad had an Asian inspiration that I really enjoyed. The fresh salmon crudo on the falafel was one of my favorite dishes and you really can't go wrong doing the pasta sampler. Had it not be that we live cross country, this would be a regular spot. Do yourself a favor and order the donuts...they're awesome!
The menu has all the right words - first class expectations - but the delivery is poor. Food was under seasoned - we asked for salt and got a mini horrible salt shaker from 1980. Service was inattentive. We had a messy eggplant course with sauce and our plates were covered with garlicy sauce - we had to ask for new plates when the next course arrived, and when these came, they lifted our dirty flatware and put them on our clean plates. Seriously?
Great restaurant! The food was amazing, the portions were way larger than expected, and they even saw that I had noted that it was my boyfriend's birthday on the reservation and brought out some ice cream with a birthday candle at the end. We had a completely lovely time.
This is a tapas restaurant. Three of us ordered 4 initial tapas plates to share. First 4 were brought out in 10 minutes of ordering and then we waited for our waiter to come back to order 2 more tapas. He kept walking by and ignoring us. Our water glasses and drinks were empty. We sat at an empty table for 30 minutes while our waiter ignored us. We tried to make eye contact and flag him down several times but he acted like he did not see us. He finally approached our table and when we informed him that he took too long to return, he just stared at us and offered no explanation or apology. He simply took our order for our 2 final tapas and left, not filling our water again until 25 minutes later when the remaining 2 tapas were served. He never tried to get us a 2nd round of cocktails. It took 90 minutes to receive 6 tapas mini plates and one round of cocktails and water. Service was TERRIBLE. Food was very good but totally disappointing experience. Won't recommend this place nor will we return.
Our waiter displayed very odd behavior and gave us poor advise when asked about menu items and wine selection.
In fact, it was comical. He asked if we would like a bottle for our table of six. We said yes and said that we were debating between two different selections. So, he says," I know about each one of our wine selections. Which ones are you considering?" We tell him. He pauses...... "Except those ones. I haven't tried them." He then brings our selection to the table and tells us that he just tried it in the back, and it was fine. Fine? You tasted our wine?
Ok... when our 'suggested appetizer' of 4 teenie tiny Pork Bellie Sliders arrived (for or party of 6) we had to laugh it off. We couldn't let one bad server ruin a beautiful evening with friends.
Now we know! There so many great restaurants in Healdsburg, no need to return here.
Great place for tapas! We had lunch there on a Saturday afternoon. The service was excellent and the food came without delay. The flavors from the dishes were spot-on and very flavorful. The 3 most memorable dishes were the pork belly biscuits, the short rib pappardelle pasta, and the octopus. The pork was not overly fatty with a crisp skin. The pasta was cooked perfectly with just the right amount of firmness while the sauce was rich with short rib that was not overcooked. The octopus was great, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Great overall experience.
The vibe at Chalkboard was great and we enjoyed sitting outside. The "small plate" menu was interesting , however our waiter was a bit of a jerk. Not sure if it was typical of this guy or was a bit of ageism (we are in our mid-sixties), but when asked for more details of two dishes that involved tuna, he seemed irritated and said that the choice was up to us, without ever answering my question. He also neglected to tell us about one of the balckboard specials if had we known, we most likely would have ordered it. (We saw it on a blackboard as we were leaving.) The small plates were very small and did not come with the proper serving utensils for sharing...like a dinner fork to serve shared salad and pasta. We are actually pretty tired of the whole small plate phenomenon and being told that we should order several to share. I'd much rather a menu that had half and full portion options. The food was good, but the portion sizes were barely shareable. The saving grace of the evening was the manager who brought us a complimentary dessert. We were only in Healdsburg for two nights and wish we had not wasted one of our evenings when there were so many other options.
We had done nothing but eat for 3 days and had decided that a small plates place would be just the ticket for a light meal. Alas, everything was so good we over ate once again. We enjoyed grilled corn, tomato salad, sliders, and the pasta tasting flight. The only dish we all universally did not enjoy was the Ricotta and Greens Gnudi. Bleh. Bland, gummy pasta ball sitting in a concoction of corn which read way too sweet for all of us. It probably didn't help that we had already had our fill of corn with the Grilled Brentwood Corn dish. Everyone loved the sliders so of course we had to order another round. I think the server forgot to put the order in and it took forever to get. They very graciously comped us that serving without us even saying anything. We certainly appreciate that they handled their little mishap so professionally, nevertheless, we were getting pretty impatient. We've eaten here a couple of time previously, and I think it's safe to say this place is now in our regular eating out rotation.
I was really dissapointed with our exoerience at Chalkboard. We picked Chalkboard as it was highly rated in several websites, however, the food was average and the service declined as the night went by and the place got busier. The food lacked flavor. Out of the 5 plates we ordered, my husband and I only enjoyed the Pork Belly Biscuits. Needless to say, with so many other options in the Healdsburg area, I doubt we will be back.
Chalkboard feels small and intimate, offers fine dining without pretention, and delivers unique food on trend but full of delicious surprises. Service was unrushed, personal, accommodating, and helpful. We LOVED the beautiful bowls filled with authentic handmade pastas! And save room for dessert--you will not find anything more delicious than the made-to-order donuts with exquisite homemade jam and peanut butter mousse!
Yum--can't wait to return.
The heirloom tomato salad was outstanding! So was the pasta special with mushrooms. Every single dish we had from the roasted fig to the candy bar dessert was an experience. The blend of flavors in each dish was like a party in your mouth. Our only regret was that we were too full to have more. We ate outside on the patio ...it was a beautiful night and when it got a little cooler the staff turned the heat lamps on. Water glass was kept full, which is important to me but doesn't seem to happen often at most places. The flight of wine was yummy and they graciously offered to switch one for me when I didn't care for it. Can't say enough about this place. I wish we didn't live across the country because we would be here weekly!
Went for our wedding anniversary 9/8. Had outstanding service from our waiter, Todd! Although unfortunately both my husband and I were under the weather, the restaurant did everything it could to make our evening special, giving us a nice quiet table, a little Prosecco, and an extra scoop of ice cream. Really appreciated it, and we'll be back when we are both healthy!
