Very old school. It was Valentine's Day and I know all restaurants have a very hectic time on this lovers' holiday, so we didn't expect a lot. But it took them about a half hour to find out that they did not have any splits of champagne, so I ordered the house sparkling, which had a lot of sulfites in it and caused me to have a stuffed nose. The waitress really was doing her best to accommodate. The table next to us had a screaming toddler who turned out to be the chef's son, apparently. The artichoke appetizer with lemon butter sauce had mostly lemon, almost no butter, so, very tart, and that was true for the scampi, also, almost all lemon juice with a little butter. White rice, mixed veggies were OK but nothing to write home about. Chicken Cordon Bleu was basically deep fried bread on the outside; this is heavier food than we normally would eat. This is not a restaurant for foodies. The cheesecake was excellent, but I'm guessing they buy that elsewhere. Then they forgot to take the split of champagne off the bill so I went back the next day and they graciously paid me for it.
Great time for Valentine’s Day, food and ambiance were perfect.
We enjoined the wonderful food and great neighborhood flavor of this restaurant almost as much as we loved the service, definitely going back!
Recommended by friends; can’t believe we hadn’t been there before. Neighbor find, very friendly welcome and service. Everyone loved their entree choices. A bit noisy in the room we were seated in but everyone was having a good time.
Hidden marvel, lovely place, impeccable service wonderful food and promotes great conversations-- it just has that sense and we are testifying that we had a great family talk, and every time we go there, it's always memorable for us all.
No one makes Sweetbreads better than Chalet Basque. That is the main reason I go to this restaurant.
Great food. Great service. Enjoy it every time.
The food was okay. The service was awful. We went for lunch on the 31st and were looking forward to returning to an old favorite from years ago. Based on the reviews we had read we were expecting friendly, excellent service and got anything but. This is the first time in literally years that we have tipped less than 15%. Even with good food, bad service definitely detracts from the dining experience.
A 40 plus year record - food is comfort food at its best. Service terrific. Ask for bar or when weather warms - outside. A hidden gem off San Pedro Rd.

Lovely place with very good food and service. Nice quiet, out of the way location, like you're on a road trip and stumble upon something authentic.
We went after seeing so many positive reviews and the place was packed for a reason. Reasonably priced, consistently good food and great service. The owner Patrick is a great guy who obviously cares greatly about service and giving people a good experience. I am not going to say that I was blown away by the innovative food...It was pretty old school as was the decor, but that’s the charm. Places like this with a history and dedication to really good service get a pass, it’s important to have them alongside places that are trying to blow your mind with gimmicks.
EXTREMELY LOUD party of 6 next to us; couldn’t hear myself think
The food was great. The waitress who served was not. Her attitude from start to finish was quite poor and her knowledge of the food and wine, especially the wine was poor. Not sure why her attitude was so bad but I would have complained about her if the food was bad which it was not.
Le Chalet's back room is "top notch" for groups. The ability to order from the menu is a real plus for different diets, palates, and the service is amazing.
We also enjoy lunch or dinner at a hospitable neighborhood restaurant. We come dressed casually, sometimes just finishing a project--no problem.
There are lots of favorites on the menu, and the chef knows how to cook fish. The petrale or sand dab special is wonderful. So fresh.
My wife & I found our new spot! Our server Linda was helpful and attentive. The soup, salad and main course were full of amazing flavors.
We have been going to Chalet Basque for 12 years and obviously we’re still fans. We now live in Florida and found time in our schedule to stop by again. My wife is French and just loves to come here, so French foodies should give this place a try. It is moderately priced and the menu has a variety of main courses. My favorite is the duck l’orange, which is served with au gratin potatoes and vegetables. All entrees are served with salad AND soup AND wonderful bread. I always start with the escargot and some red wine.
A very notable thing about this restaurant is that the same staff as when we first started going to chalet Basque is still working there. This tells me how well the management has treated their employees, and we love the staff at this restaurant. Always happy to serve you with a smile!
No restaurant in the Bay Area does sweetbreads like Chateau Basque...superb and the dish is relatively inexpensive! Where else can you get a great martini for $7.00? Please note that Chateau Basque caters to the elderly (including myself), and average age of attendees must be over 70 years. I love kids, but youngsters can ruin a quiet lunch and supper.
We were here on New Year's Eve and they had a price fixed menu. We had 4 kids with us and they were nice enough to charge us a lower price for the kids and added a few items they could order. The noise level was really loud but I'm not sure if this was only because it was NYE or if it is like that normally. We were visiting from out of town. The service was great and we really enjoyed the food! I would love to go back next time I'm in the area.
Great New Years Eve fixed menu selections! Always a fun time, like going home again! Patrick and Christina always make it lively and welcoming! See you soon!
It was New Year's eve. Tables bunched together which made for a high noise level. Food was very well prepared, no complaints about that. We'll go back on another occasion when the ambience is a bit more peaceful..
Went with friends. They did their best trying to accommodate our special requests. The lamb shank was the best choice followed by the Gateau Basque desert. Ask them to serve the ice cream separately since I found it detracted from the delicate almond cake. You may also ask to have your entry sauce served on the side if you want to enjoy the protein as it was cooked. Our server was attentive checking back on a regular basis. They serve classic dishes. You will recognize them on their menu.
I loved the dish I got: Sweetbreads financiere. Something unusual which you can't find on the menu in most restaurants. This restaurant offers other unusual dishes as well. Very tasty and well prepared!
for 15 years i've brought all my freinds there. I love there menu and European ambiance in the bar and outdoors - like being on vacation in the Basque country - AND by now, with still the same staff Linda, Alexandro and Patric taking over for his dad - they make me feel like family!!!
Always reliable always delicious! This restaurant always satisfies the palate and experience.
I love this old place, every meal I've had here has been over the top yummy! I'm a big Lamb lover and they have the best Lamb Shank and Rack of Lamb, my mom had the New York Steak with Béarnaise sauce, WOW. We had the full meal, which includes the Basque favorite appetizer of Pate, Salami and Peppercini's and garlic bread. Ice cream at the end. We left with no room in our tummies for anything.
Food was devine!
Our waitress was excellent and worked diligently to get our orders out so we could get to the concert in time.
This was our first visit. The host and entire staff were very pleasant. We felt like they were welcoming us into their home. We had some good drinks in the bar first and ended up choosing one of the bar tables because we liked the lively scene there. I liked that soup and salad was included. The food was very tasty and the portions were good (rare these days). We both left full without room for dessert (but they had a lot of good options). Pricing is reasonable and they clearly have a lot of "regulars."
Very friendly service. Waitress was attentive. Had sweetbread, grilled rock cod, and escargot.
Good portions and seasoned and cooked nicely. Soup and salad comes with the meal but nothing to rave about. The potato leek soup was a bit watery, needed to be creamier and smoothy in texture. Overall a pleasant old school french dining.
Over all the meal and service were good. However it was Thanksgiving and they seemed to want to fit every table that had into the dining room. Can't total the number of times I was brushed and bumped in the back. Was very annoying and loud. Never again.
