What Insiders Are Saying
Central Standard is a crowd-pleaser in South Congress that's great for any and all group dinners.
We had an early start about 4:45 - 7:00. The tables were not full so noise level could potentially become very energetic. Our waiter was fabulous, able to assist a food restricted diner pointing out numerous safe foods and options that could be modified. Drinks, appetizer and the meal were all superb. I look forward to more dinners at this very happening spot.
As a local, I wouldn’t go out if my way to eat there. It was good, but I can go to a lot of other places in Austin and get same or better quality food and service.
Amazing drinks and food
Our server, Ben, was so awesome. The food was all great (please get the deviled eggs!) and the ambiance was as well. We’ll definitely be back.
I spent my Easter Sunday grabbing drinks in the bar at Central Standard. Must admit this 2nd visit for HH with a new ATX friend far exceeded my initial experience. Our server made our night! He was accommodating (quickly moved us to patio since we had 2 pups), knowledgeable (great menu insight), helpful (explained / recommended delicious cocktails), funny + friendly. All that combined with the value of happy hour choices left me impressed. Can't wait to go back for more happy hours :)
Really enjoyed our dinner at Central Standard. The food was perfect for sharing a bunch of items and was a good value for what you got. The mac and cheese was phenomenal and the meatballs were fantastic. Food came out unbelievably fast, but our server was not the quickest. Food actually came out before our drinks did and there were only 3 of us. I am sure it was just an off day for the server, or they were extra busy, so I would still go back!
The staff was so kind and accommodating to our two year old at a trend place. The food was delicious!
Great place, good food. It was just a difficult to hear my wife over the noise, but I wouldn't trade that for an empty restaurant.
Always delicious. The staff is amazing and attentive.
Bartender was unengaged. Went somewhere else because we felt we were burdening to order more drinks.
We showed up for our reservation, and let the host know our name. She was super unfriendly, sighed and walked us to our table. It was pretty quiet for a Saturday night, and there were numerous bartenders/servers milling about. We sat for 5 minutes waiting to be greeted, and never were. We then decided to leave and go elsewhere for dinner. It was a very disappointing experience given we have been to and enjoyed Central Standard on many previous occasions.
Lovely ambiance walking in for dinner. Much smaller dining area than expected but gave it a cozy feel. Great suggestions for cocktails that were light and refreshing. Potato bread and creme fraiche butter was delicious. Brussel sprouts was served in a trendy iron dish along with the Mac and cheese. Salad (smaller size) was enough for a meal. Slightly disappointed that the shrimp was over cooked. Overall great experience. Looks like a good experience set up for larger parties. Patio area would be fantastic for cooler weather. Wish the hostess or staff had reminded me of the the discount comp parking in the garage.
I made a reservation for me and 3 of my guest, we arrived got seated waited for 15 minutes to get greeted and no server showed up finally my friend got up and went to the host desk to ask for someone to come to our table. When the server finally arrived he looked annoyed and proceeded to tell us that he was new and didn’t know why that was his table, the host did send us out a complimentary bread which was very tasty, when we asked our server for the wine list our server stood behind me watching me select a bottle it was creepy we had to tell him we needed more time so he would stop breathing on my neck, the rest of the evening the service was fine but what I did love about this place we’re the shrimp hush puppies and the amazing stuffed peppers I just wish we would’ve had a different service experience because I think it could have been an even better night.
Love this place. The servers all have been top notch and the food has not disappointed. I never ever liked Oysters, but this place has made me a fan.
Great. One thing that was less than satisfying was that I indicated we were celebrating a birthday and it was not mentioned. Oh well :(
The food was delicious! I took my husband to Central Standard for Father’s Day. We ordered the oysters, macaroni and cheese, the steak special, the NY steak, the grilled shrimp, two lemon pies and the whiskey cake. Everything was yummy! Our waitress Keyla was awesome. I can’t wait to go back😊
Pros: We really enjoyed our dinner. It had been a long time (maybe two years) since we'd been and we were pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed everything. We had several small plates. The shrimp was probably our favorite with the fresh sauce.
Cons: we sort of assumed that the salad would come first, but it came after we'd already had two or three small plates (not a huge deal, but kinda' weird for America). We also were a little disappointed there wasn't a gluten free option on the desert menu. (also not a huge deal, but we find that most of the top restaurants are doing that now.)
Service was a little slow, we think due to our server being new or appeared to be new. No napkins served with drinks.
Central Standard's service was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in recent memory. The food was very mediocre and the staff pretty much ignored us the entire night. I would not waste money or time in that restaurant when there are so many great choices in Austin.
Went to Central Standard on a Sunday evening because it was close to parking, but now I will make it a point when I'm in Austin to go out of my way to get to Central Standard every chance I get. We ordered 3 Bites and 3 Large Plates that were recommended by our server, and all six were absolutely perfect. Don't miss this restaurant even if you have to hunt for parking (and you will).
You simply have to rethink how you make a gimlet. It tasted like men's cologne and not at all like a fresh lime juice cocktail. And more importantly, you come up on google as a place for steaks, and it was disappointing that there were no steak choices for my mom's birthday. She was not satisfied with the one option you have. I think the reviews that say you're a place for steaks is very misleading, but not your fault maybe.
Our waiter was absolutely great though.
We had a fantastic meal, as always, at Central Standard. It's one of Austin's best!
Very basic items took 45 mins to come out.
Really disappointing Mother’s Day brunch
Was a huge fan of Central Standard, however the service has been getting worse over time. Not what it used to be.
Unfortunately horrendous service completely overshadowed decent food when it finally showed up. Although management did comp part of the bill, the damage had been done. Even after seeing/acknowledging we had not been served, we still had to ask multiple times just to order. Then it took even longer for the food. There are too many great options for food AND service in Austin; don’t ruin your experience going here.
Everything was great the service was on the spot and very accommodating. They oysters were fresh. All the food came out hot and prompt. I will deifinitly be returning...maybe next weekend.
Central Standard did not disappoint. We made the reservation for a family dinner, which historically has always been a struggle because my parents are older and are getting to their "picky" stage. Every dish we ordered was great and received the nod of approval from all of us. The meatball and grits and deviled eggs appetizers were amazing. We all agreed that the oysters were some of the best we've ever had. I had the NY strip as my main course and it was cooked perfectly. Will definitely be going back and highly recommend it.
This was the third time I've been here. Servers seemed a bit overwhelmed and the food did not come out in the order I was expecting. Overall quality of food was good, price point is about what you would expect on South Congress for a quality meal.
Oysters were great, drinks were nothing special, and everything was over salted.
Service was very slow. First shift for the waiter at this restaurant. Food was good, just took a long while
The small plates were a little uneven in quality, with the Brussel sprouts being undercooked and bland, in particular. Try the deviled eggs and the tostadas. They were great! Cocktails were competently mixed, but not outstanding.
Wasn’t crazy about it and wouldn’t go back
I loved it. Our server was sweet and helpful. The manager of the restaurant was attentive and present. I marked ambiance as "good" because it's a beautiful space, but we were sweaty. Really phenomenal cocktails and wine...Great job!
We made a reservation for Easter Sunday brunch and while the food was amazing, the poor service is hard to forget. Based on the reservation process I have to assume the restaurant knew many tables would be full. We were treated by one server who never came back. Another took our drink order, which took 10+ minutes to arrive, and then our food order. A runner delivered the drinks and food and the server did not come back until we asked the person that cleared our plates for the check.
As for food, the chicken and biscuit was amazing. Also good were the fries w/sauce and BLT.
Celebrated 17 year anniversary with family!
Came for our anniversary. We sat in the dining area and wasn’t aware you couldn’t get happy hour except in the bar and cocktail area. Food was phenomenal, cocktail server was awkward, but overall experience was great. Thankful for food, great company, and a beautiful experience.
Ana, the hostess and our waitress was fantastic. When we asked her about the fish special she described, but then said "only one left". I wanted the dish and she assured we got it. She was very pleasant, attentive, but not hoovering much.
We had the Atlantic Char- which was superb, as well as a shrimp cucumber salad and the Cauliflower Side ( the spicy one) and ALL were fantastic. And dessert!!!! The lemon bar was the perfect size and flavor. If you want to send the recipe for the lemon bar, we would make it for our friends and boast where we got the recipe.
Enjoyed a lot!
We were rewarded with a very cool interior and the food was well done for sure, save for dessert. Our server was a bit on the odd side, in a unengaged, not totally friendly way. Perhaps it was a bad night. Wine list was very serviceable, however not many lower priced wines for the couple that dines out a lot.
