Beautiful location, in an old mansion on a high hill overlooking Tarrytown. Great food and wine, service and timing was fine. This is part of a larger facility that hosts special events. It is literally in the cellar, though, the good views from the upstairs being devoted to catered conferences and events. You can walk around the grounds before or after eating.
We have been to the Cellar in the past and have never been disappointed. On this occasion we were meeting old friends from CT (we live in NJ) and felt the location as well as our previous dining experience would make for an enjoyable evening. We were disheartened to have been chastised by one of our servers when we were not ready to order in what he felt to have been a reasonable amount of time. We had been sitting at our table for less than 15 minutes when he came to us and explained that he would anticipate the need for our departure in a timely manner to accommodate later diners. At this time, only 3 other tables were is use.
So we quickly ordered, ate our meal and departed, having felt pressure to move along.
Of note is that by the time we left, the restaurant was at 70% capacity if that. There were no diners waiting. .
We had two servers-the younger of the two was more than lovely, the elder gentleman (perhaps in his late 50's) was the server who felt we would be monopolizing his area and bid us along.
I am not one to complain and as such did not challenge this gentleman while we were at your lovely restaurant. However, I would implore management to discourage this type of behavior. Additionally, I would caution future diners to be aware of this episode and be prepared to confront a similar request from your wait staff. Do not allow this type of behavior to spoil a potentially lovely evening as it did for us.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Hope it continues!
Nice atmosphere. Great staff. Good wholesome food. Unique building. Loved the gas fireplace to warm the place on a cold evening.
Meal was disappointing. I have dined at Cellar before and have had much better experience. I suppose it’s a slow time for them and not too much effort is put into it.
Service was good.
Overall the place was great, but there needs to be some better signage to know where the restaurant is in the complex and where to park. I circled around for 20 minutes.
Though the room was busy, it remained a perfect place for a quiet Valentine's Day dinner date. We were seated promptly and given a proper amount of time to scan the drinks/wine list before our waiter came to inquire about our choices. The house prosecco, which was one of the options in the prix fixe menu for the month, was delicious. The available starters and entrees on either the prix fixe or regular menus gave us a lot to consider. The beet salad was ample and flavorful. As for the filet mignon, well, you should have been there. Perfect, from preparation to presentation and consumption. I will definitely be going back to try other menu items. The wait staff was helpful and attentive without being intrusive. A memorable experience, over all.
This was our third time at Cellar 49. As usual, the food was very good as was the ambience. Each of our servers was polite, friendly and responsive. But therein lies the rub. We had two many servers so the overall effect was a pronounced lack of continuity. We suspect that you used a team approach so as to increase efficiency, perhaps to overcome short staffing, but it didn't work for us. There were long gaps in service such that a messy table went uncleaned after we finished eating and we waiting an extended period for the check. These gaps diluted the momentum of the evening.
Entrance was hard to find. Food was good. Not the best we have had. Service was good. Was a bit slow serving. Open table said they were booked so we went at 7 which is a bit early for us on a Saturday. Was not so busy after all.
This was an adorable cozy place with excellent food and stellar service. I had the lamb tenderloin which was beautifully done and cooked to perfection. Hubby had the steak which he loved. The sides were wonderful and the most inventive cocktails.
Great space. Very warm and inviting. Service fantastic and food high quality. Amazing cocktails. Will definitely be back!
Our dinners were delicious. The atmosphere was very cozy and quiet because there was only one other family there. The fireplace was lovely. All around very nice. My only slightly negative comment would be that it's very pricey.
The food, service, ambiance, drinks were SUPERB! Try the pre fixe menu. It is worth the price with the alcohol alone! Definitely will return!
Staff very accommodating. Service excellent. Ambiance great.
We had a very tasty lunch. French onion soup was delish, burger was huge, chicken and cubano also delicious. It was a snowy Saturday so it was a little quiet and you could hear the conversations at the surrounding tables. It is a cool location esp if you are a history buff. Looks like a wedding here would be beautiful.
Extremely Friendly, felt very welcomed, comfortable, attentive and had a delicious dinner with a friend!
Went for 20th Anniversary celebration on a weeknight. The initial 20 or so minutes was not to our liking but, once we were seated, the evening could not have been better. The initial issues relate to the bartender (did not provide a 'welcoming' vibe - appeared he wanted to be anywhere but behind the bar and/or dealing with people) and the host. As we approached the host 'stand' to be seated he took a call, turned away from us and stayed on his call for a couple/few minutes as we stood there. To be fair, he did apologize when he hung up but, simply put, it wasn't right. From this point on, however, the experience could not have been any better. We were seated in a very cozy, quiet and comfortable 'back room' area adjacent to the 'private room'/wine cellar. Very romantic. Our waiter, Paul, was awesome. He was warm, friendly, attentive and engaging. The other serving staff (bus boy, food runner) were unobtrusive. The "pace" of everything was excellent ... we never felt rushed yet felt we were always being attended to. The food was, simply put, outstanding. I'm very picky/judgmental when it comes to steak and the rib-eye was seasoned well, cooked a perfect medium rare and served with a nice/non overwhelming wine reduction. Simply yummy. The scallops were massive and they too were perfectly seasoned and cooked.
The Cellar was on the lower level of bidder mansion and we were seated near the fire place which was nice and has a cozy feel. It is nicely decorated, dark and woody decor with some interested old bottles and vintage decor as you walk down into the cellar. The servers greeted us nicely and the place was empty, only about 2-3 tables occupied despite there being no reservations available on open table except that time slot so I expected it to be far more busy and I have a feeling that it does not usually get busy but the waiter did say they were quite busy which was odd. Anyway the rosemary bread they bring out to the table is delicious soft and warm. I had the mule cocktail which was a nice twist on the original. We shared the Caesar salad which was really good with the large bacon pieces, loaded with cheese and the dressing was nice and creamy. It was big enough to share and they do not chop the Romain which was strange at first but I kind of liked it because it was easier to grab and put on your plate. I got the lamb and my husband ordered the burger both cooked to perfection and very juicy, savory, great flavors and good ingredients. My husband really enjoyed the ketchup they used for the burger and fries as it’s more of a homemade slightly chunky ketchup not Heinz I think they said Kensington’s. The service was extremely fast since they were not busy at all. This was the only thing I was not extremely happy about I would have liked to hang a bit more but we felt slightly rushed by the extremely fast service if that makes sense.
The restaurant and bar are quaint and cozy. The food was amazing. We enjoyed dinner so much we went back again the next night. Service was also outstanding! We would highly recommend!
Location and atmosphere were amazing. Our waiter was awesome. They were out of a few items we were interested in but dinner was excellent anyway. My one complaint was the salmon was supposed to be served with brocollini but regular broccoli was substituted and there was way way too much if it and it was far too crispy.
Friendly and wonderful staff, delicious food, lovely wine list. Excellent service.
Discovered this fabulous restaurant during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. The food was fabulous and the ambiance great. The waiter was friendly and attentive. The only disappointment was that they don't have the HVRW menu on Friday night, even though the HVRW website said they did. Still, we had a great meal and a wonderful time. The pork belly with cheesy grits was divine! The sauce on the fish tacos was a tad too spicy, so we took most of the "slaw" off the top, but it was really nice that they did them with grilled fish, instead of fried.
Our second visit there. The service is very friendly, attentive but not rushed. Both occasions were to catch up with friends. We were able to enjoy the food, relax and enjoy the conversation. Highly recommend.
Lovely dining experience with the family before we head out to The Blaze. Service exceptional, ambiance cozy and comfortable, dinner did not disappoint. Have already recommended friends to try in the near future. Will definitely be back!
Friendly, knowledgeable and efficient service by Paul. Greeted by charmless bar lady who scowled non-stop and was slow to serve. then served undrinkable bitter cocktails (suited her expression).
Food was great. Estate is beautiful. Would love to go back in the spring.
Our dinner was delicious! We had Manhattan clam chowder and crab toast for appetizers And for entrees the 16 ounce ribeye and scallops. Everything was cooked to perfect consistency and the portions were large. We finished our meal off with a delicious apple tart. I highly recommend this place. We will definitely be going back.
We had a early reservations so the tables were mostly empty and we weren’t sure what to expect. The ambience was warm and perfect for a Fall evening. Following an expertly crafted cocktail, we ordered off the Prix fixe menu and were extremely happy with the food and service. The Caesar salad was delicious with large crispy bacon pieces and the perfect amount I’df drizzled dressing, the chicken main dish was the perfect idea of comfort food! We finished up with an apple tart a la mode and pumpkin cheesecake which were both absolutely delicious! Would highly recommend!
The best porkchop i have ever had. Period. Moist with a wonderful appricot glaze. Served over cheddar cheese grits.
Fresh food. Delicious. Great Salmon and wonderful wine. Service was top notch.
Nice to see a restaurant that makes desserts with real ingredients, instead of sugary/fake tasting stuff you get at some restaurants. Very pleasant staff, the manager has been there for some time, very pleasant. Always a treat to eat at the former Biddle Mansion.
WE were staying at the Tarrytown Estates that weekend, where Cellar 49 is located. We knew we would be arriving late, so made an 8PM reservation. My friend ended up arriving over an hour late, but the restaurant kept allowing us to change our reservation until 9:15. I think they kept the kitchen open for us! The margarita flatbread was tasty but a little burned, but the chicken casesar salad was delicious.
The food was delicious. The waiter was super attentive !
The French Onion Soup was amazing as well as the Wedge Salad
The unique but enjoyable sauce on the Ribeye was delightful. The chicken was the same. I give the chef 4 stars. Wonderful meal. I would have given them 5 stars, however, the choice of wines were lacking. They did not complement to the food selections available. Put a little more thoughts into raising the level of wine selections to meet with the Outstanding food selection. Overall I would have dinner again there, should I be in the area. I also want to say one last note the serving staff was friendly and very professional. They knew when to approach us and never felt rushed. This is a sign of people who want the dining experience to be a pleasure. KUDO's
Food is fine but service slow and inattentive. The ambiance is nice and the location interesting. Would have expected better value.
Located in the 'cellar' of the Biddle Mansion at Tarrytown Estate House on the Hudson this a mostly nice dining experience. The Veal Chop was cooked perfectly as was the Lamb Tenderloin. We paired this with a 2015 Côtes du Rhône (2014 was on the menu) which was delicious! The ambiance was a little contrived to appear to be wine cellar-ish. Afterwards, at the bar to order a nightcap we found the bartender to be disengaged.. and we're basically kicked out by the manager who stayed "You can take your drinks outside to the firepit!" Makes you wonder why some people are in the service industry!
I had a lovely evening!! We went to celebrate my friends birthday. We first had drinks outside , which is just beautiful!! Then went inside for the most delicious diner!! We're looking forward to returning!!
Mediocre food and poor service. Wait staff was confused with several people asking for drink or food orders. First course was rushed, coming right after drinks arrived, but we waited forever for coffee at the end. They forgot my credit card and I had to go back for it. Had to send food back. My wife ordered lamb "pink" and it came rare. Pub-like atmosphere was acceptable. Great view of the Hudson but from outside, but not from the basement restaurant. Overall poor. Will not return or recommend.
This restaurant is consistently terrific. The food (we ordered the ribeye and veal chop) was cooked to perfection. Had some drinks at the bar before dinner and they were the best!! Staff is A+! Will be returning for many years to come.
The estate is large so parking was confusing. This was exacerbated by the fact that a truck was blocking our access to the drive. When we finally found the restaurant (a hidden gem) it was empty. It is below ground (hence the name Cellar) so it feels a little dark, but is well appointed with a game room, bar, seating area as well as a separate dining room. The service and food were excellent.
