Celia's Mexican Restaurant - Palo Alto Ratings and Reviews
I have been going to Celia's for years. We were seated outside and the server never came. I went inside to ask for water and they said, "sorry we are busy" I asked them if we should just leave. After it still taking forever, just to get water, chips and salsa, we got up and left. They seemed surprised.
I made this reservation on Cinco de Mayo to celebrate a May 5th birthday in our family - knowing that without a reservation there would be a long wait. But when we got there, Celia's said they don't take reservations on Cinco de Mayo. So I am disappointed that OpenTable gave me this option that Celia's wasn't prepared to honor. The wait wasn't terribly long, considering the holiday, but the OpenTable reservation was useless.
Love Celia's (the chain) in general but this location needs to be condemned and re-built. Honestly the facilities are close to disgusting and the bathrooms atrocious. Sorry Celia's I certainly will not be back and would not recommend this location to anyone.
We were a group of 7 on a Saturday night, so they may do better at other times. The food was very average. It took forever for them to serve five of us and the other two had to wait another five minutes. Dinner, when served, was cold. We didn't see the waiter again until I went downstairs and asked for the check.
I ordered the three tostadas plate which was 80% lettuce and served cold. I would also swear there was no tequila in the margaritas. :(.
Overall a good place to take a large group of business associates for a casual business meal. Traditional Mexican food and large portions. Service although nice was extremely slow. Table wasn't ready when we showed up as a group of 10 and it took 20mins to get a menu and have a server come to take our drink order. We also waited a long time to get our drinks. Otherwise a good experience.
Celia's is a classic. From the margaritas to the burritos all Mexican dishes you have come to love are here. I had the deluxe tostada and was able to ask for black beans instead of mashed pintos. My margarita was delicious. The service was very attentive and friendly. I will be going back when I next eat Mexican. Thank you.
So, it was my first time visit here at this location, I was just going for an afternoon ride taking my
93 yr. old mom out.
I have to tell you, the service was just wonderful, the best of all of the locations that I have been too. We will be going back again!
Met a friend in town for dinner. Waited at the front to be seated for quite a while (with a reservation which we were on time for). Finally seated, waiting about 5 minutes for anyone to come. Took drink order, brought half the drinks. Asked for napkins (for the chips and salsa) and the waiter didn't come back for 20 minutes (after flagging someone else down).
Seemed like an off night... but the food was good once it came. The 'cheese dip' left a little to be desired.
Somewhere in between forgettable Tex-Mex and the wonderful food of Sonora in Tucson and southern Arizona, one tends to find Bay Area Mexican restaurants. Celia's is one of our favorites. The menu is diverse, including the more traditional meals of northern Mexico, as well as interior and coastal dishes. The staff is very friendly, and the Top Shelf margarita is very good.
I've been eating at Celia's Restaurants in each of their many Bay Area locations (Daly City, San Bruno, Millbrae, Palo Alto) for many years now and probably always will. The dishes are reliably superb, as is the atmosphere and service. The Hernandez family has created a warm and inviting chain and as far as I know most of the "kids" all work one or another, so you know there's a pedal to the metal in KEEPING the locations' top-notch! I nearly always have my favorite entree, Pollo En Crema (a lovely variation of Chicken Stroganoff, with a decidedly Mexican twist). The dishes are plentiful and quite reasonably priced and I always try to keep up on the "kids" whenever I visit a location. GO GO GO and be prepared for a real treat!
Look, this isn't fine dining - but I give it 5 stars because it is reliable, delicious Mexican fare that I enjoy and crave. The guacamole is perfectly made, the chips perfectly salted and the enchilada sauce always on point. I'm picky about leftovers, but always enjoy my Celia's next day, too. Try the Tijuana Taco Salad for the perfect blend of gluttony (refried beans, meat and cheese) and freshness (salad of lettuce and tomato).
We celebrated a graduation here with a large group and the service was great! Very helpful and accommodating - even to the point of bringing out a ladder when our helium balloon went into the rafters :) Food was good too and covered porch was great for our group celebration...
I went here on a warm day and unfortunately the restaurant itself did not feel comfortable, so we sat outside, which was nice with a little breeze blowing through. With that, the scene was sparing but it felt authentic and had great Latin music in the background. The food was really good, maybe not the best Mexican food in the world, but definitely a great little spot for a family dinner.
The portions are not overwhelmingly big or small, but just right. And the drinks were very well done, with a great selection of Tequila for the purist in everyone.
Service was good, and the waiter was very polite. But I don't see it as a great place for a date. Perhaps on a cooler night sitting at their bar for Happy Hour would be a little better. But again, family dinner all the way.
