Celestino Ratings and Reviews
We loved the wait staff! Mature servers who had each other’s backs. We weren’t clear who our official waiter was, as different people helped at different stages, but they made it clear they were coordinating. Comfortable dining room, conversation all around, but not loud, just lively. Age of patrons skewed older, but that was fine for us. Perfect experience for a special dinner.
Out of town friends and I enjoyed the European service (unobtrusive, but always at the ready) and Italian cuisine. Our pastas and osso bucco were excellent; the birthday tarts were a surprise and the waiters' jovial birthday song made it fun. The ambiance is understated, comfortable and relaxed, and we could hear eachother speak!
I never expected to find such an authentic Italian restaurant in Pasadena! The food was extraordinarily well-prepared, the menu very extensive. We highly recommend the petite mushroom omelette with truffle appetizer, the osso bucco, and the duck ravioli. For dessert, definitely the panna cotta! Our waiter was exceptional--professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming. On the negative side, being seated by the prep station was a bit noisy. All in all, a gem worth visiting.
had 5;30 dinner as we left Santa Anita and perfect timing as the restaurant wasn't full and we enjoyed great service from the staff. by the time we left it was jam packed and quite noisy due to slow check in of parties, which had people standing around entrance/bar.
from food perspective, it is a solid italian spot. pastas savory and no overuse of garlic, which is rare!
Food was pretty good; Service was about the worst I've experienced. From the hostess to the server, everyone acted as if they didn't care if we were there or not. When we arrived for our reservation, the hostess just pointed and said, "there's your table over there in the corner". After we sat ourselves, we waited almost 30 minutes for anyone to come by and finally ended up asking the water guy if we had a server. He summoned a server for us but it didn't get any better from there. The food was pretty good but the absolute worst service I've experienced won't bring us back. Once we finally got our dinner, we ate, paid the bill and went across the street to a place we knew had better service and enjoyed drinks and dessert.
We went to Celestino for lunch because of DineLA. I ordered the Pork tenderloin in rosemary sauce. The serving was so small that my friend joked that “this was fine dining”. There were 5 pieces of thumb-size pork meat and about 4 pieces of vegetables. The dessert was not any bigger. I was still hungry after eating lunch.
We went for the dine LA event and were looking forward to the prix fix menu as advertised on the dine LA web site. When we arrived the waiter did not know what we were taking about. After talking to the hostess he brought us a menu from the July 2017 event and disappeared. I approached the hostess and asked for an updated menu and she shrugged her shoulders and told me that’s what the manager gave her. I would call this a fail for dine LA.
I dined at Celestino's last night, Jan. 12. The food was terrific, but the dining experience was very disappointing.
I made reservations through Open Table to celebrate my nephew's 16th birthday. He specifically chose Celestino's because of the Dine LA menu and the rabbit dish. I originally made reservations for 3, but changed the reservation for 2 at 7:15 pm. We arrived and checked in on time. After 5-10 wait we were seated in the back dining room. As we waited to be seated I noticed several small tables open and available in the main dining room. Instead we were seated at a large table in the back room.
We were provided menus, but not the Dine LA menu. After specifically requesting the Dine LA menu, it was provided. My nephew immediately ordered the rabbit course from the menu and was told it was not available. He made another selection, and I ordered from the regular menu. The food was delicious.
Our waiter was professionally, friendly and very knowledgable.
As I mentioned earlier, we were there to celebrate my nephew's 16th birthday. As we dined, there were 3 other birthday celebrations in the same dining room. Because I had already requested the birthday acknowledgement and I saw it was noted on their computer screen I assumed he too would have his birthday celebration. It never happened. We were eventually presented with the bill, paid and left.
Although the food was spectacular, the service/dining experience was very disappointing. From being placed at a large table, having to specifically request the Dine LA menu, not being able to order the only item he was anxious to have, an unreasonable delay in presenting 2 diners with their starting course at a similar time, and then not having his birthday acknowledged - this experience does not meet my expectation of a good dining experience. I have eaten at Celestino's before and had terrific food and great dining experiences.
My husband has been here many times with very positive feedback. This was my first time.
Waiter announced specials before taking drink orders. We ordered salad/soup - it was never served. Instead they brought our main course after a considerable wait. Waiter tried to make things right with "free dessert" but when I ordered a cannoli, they charged us. Never asked us if we wanted a second drink or refilled coffee. Not sure what happened this night but quite disappointing.
We went their to take my parents out and to take part in Dine LA. The Dine LA menu was posted on the site and in their restaurant. 20 after we ordered the manager came to tell us he was not honoring the Dine LA menu because they made a mistake on the menu. He said it was 3 courses but his menu had 4 courses. We told them it was a printed menu as four courses and we came there specifically for Dine LA. He started yelling at us saying we were trying take advantage of their restaurant. We were just trying to get what we ordered but he refused to honor the menu. We decided to leave. I've never had such a rude belligerent owner speak to me that way in a restaurant . He said if we were in Italy he'd have our legs cut off for trying to take advantage of him. As a frequent restaurant goer I've been to this location many times before. I will never step foot in his restaurant again after being insulted and yelled at in front of the entire restaurant. He should have honored their mistake and made it right instead of making it our fault.
It was....alright...nothing to write home about. Food was cooked well and service was good. We had the lambshank and rabbit. If you're coming to Pasadena for one meal, I wouldnt recommend it. If you live in the area and am looking for a place to try, then go for it.
Have been at Celestinos quite a few times and this was my worst experience. Had reservations and they were overbooked, slow service, food was over cooked and waiter had an attitude. I spoke to the owner to tell him about the experience and he only asked if I complained to the waiter about the food and I told I would have if we could find him.
Celestino never disappoints. The food always meets a high standard and is very tasty and authentic without being fussy. We also like the fact that there is no muzak and we can have quiet conversation. Specials are very good and you can ask for things not on the menu, for example, your favorite risotto, and mostly you can get it. Salads are especially good and fresh and not too huge and appetite-reducing. Highly recommended for any night you want a pleasant and comfortable evening in Pasadena.
Wanted to try this restaurant based on the OpenTable reviews. It's an attractive and cozy place, with both indoor and outdoor seating. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. Water was brought immediately. Then we waited for our server to order wine. Then we waited for our server to order dinner for an unusually long time. He said that he was waiting for us to "signal" him. The Insalade Rustica was outstanding. Warm bread and butter delicious. We both ordered different types of risotto; both orders were way too al dente for our taste. My risotto with aged balsamic and rosemary sounded wonderful, but the execution was poor - way too much balsamic (I think it should have been a reduction to give it more richness) and had no flavor of rosemary. But the real issue here was the service. It seems they use an "up" system so servers are assigned tables alternatively as guests are seated, so servers have tables all over the restaurant. The tables on either side of ours had different servers. I think this and probably a poor server accounted for the lack of attention we experienced. He never came back after the food was delivered and it was a frustrating and long experience to get the check. I did something that I never do, I tipped 10% - the service was that bad!
New Year’s Eve choice. Reservation made ahead so there was no wait. Service was good but a tad hurried. We sat on the outside glass enclosure—it was pretty but they had gas burners that were turned up way too hot and we had to ask them to turn it down several times. Everyone was complaining that it was too hot so I’m not sure why they didn’t turn them way down. One busboy actually came in and turned it up and we had to have a long conversation about why we wanted it DOWN. It seemed unnecessary. The food was over all good. We had an appetizer that was so-so (stuffed calamari) and one The was great (mushroom soufflé). My husband had mushroom risotto...it was good, not amazing. I had linguine with shrimp in a verde peppercorn sauce. It was very tasty. Wine suggestion was a Pinot Noir. It was perfect.
