Celestino Ratings and Reviews
My husband has been here many times with very positive feedback. This was my first time.
Waiter announced specials before taking drink orders. We ordered salad/soup - it was never served. Instead they brought our main course after a considerable wait. Waiter tried to make things right with "free dessert" but when I ordered a cannoli, they charged us. Never asked us if we wanted a second drink or refilled coffee. Not sure what happened this night but quite disappointing.
We went their to take my parents out and to take part in Dine LA. The Dine LA menu was posted on the site and in their restaurant. 20 after we ordered the manager came to tell us he was not honoring the Dine LA menu because they made a mistake on the menu. He said it was 3 courses but his menu had 4 courses. We told them it was a printed menu as four courses and we came there specifically for Dine LA. He started yelling at us saying we were trying take advantage of their restaurant. We were just trying to get what we ordered but he refused to honor the menu. We decided to leave. I've never had such a rude belligerent owner speak to me that way in a restaurant . He said if we were in Italy he'd have our legs cut off for trying to take advantage of him. As a frequent restaurant goer I've been to this location many times before. I will never step foot in his restaurant again after being insulted and yelled at in front of the entire restaurant. He should have honored their mistake and made it right instead of making it our fault.
It was....alright...nothing to write home about. Food was cooked well and service was good. We had the lambshank and rabbit. If you're coming to Pasadena for one meal, I wouldnt recommend it. If you live in the area and am looking for a place to try, then go for it.
Have been at Celestinos quite a few times and this was my worst experience. Had reservations and they were overbooked, slow service, food was over cooked and waiter had an attitude. I spoke to the owner to tell him about the experience and he only asked if I complained to the waiter about the food and I told I would have if we could find him.
Celestino never disappoints. The food always meets a high standard and is very tasty and authentic without being fussy. We also like the fact that there is no muzak and we can have quiet conversation. Specials are very good and you can ask for things not on the menu, for example, your favorite risotto, and mostly you can get it. Salads are especially good and fresh and not too huge and appetite-reducing. Highly recommended for any night you want a pleasant and comfortable evening in Pasadena.
Wanted to try this restaurant based on the OpenTable reviews. It's an attractive and cozy place, with both indoor and outdoor seating. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. Water was brought immediately. Then we waited for our server to order wine. Then we waited for our server to order dinner for an unusually long time. He said that he was waiting for us to "signal" him. The Insalade Rustica was outstanding. Warm bread and butter delicious. We both ordered different types of risotto; both orders were way too al dente for our taste. My risotto with aged balsamic and rosemary sounded wonderful, but the execution was poor - way too much balsamic (I think it should have been a reduction to give it more richness) and had no flavor of rosemary. But the real issue here was the service. It seems they use an "up" system so servers are assigned tables alternatively as guests are seated, so servers have tables all over the restaurant. The tables on either side of ours had different servers. I think this and probably a poor server accounted for the lack of attention we experienced. He never came back after the food was delivered and it was a frustrating and long experience to get the check. I did something that I never do, I tipped 10% - the service was that bad!
New Year’s Eve choice. Reservation made ahead so there was no wait. Service was good but a tad hurried. We sat on the outside glass enclosure—it was pretty but they had gas burners that were turned up way too hot and we had to ask them to turn it down several times. Everyone was complaining that it was too hot so I’m not sure why they didn’t turn them way down. One busboy actually came in and turned it up and we had to have a long conversation about why we wanted it DOWN. It seemed unnecessary. The food was over all good. We had an appetizer that was so-so (stuffed calamari) and one The was great (mushroom soufflé). My husband had mushroom risotto...it was good, not amazing. I had linguine with shrimp in a verde peppercorn sauce. It was very tasty. Wine suggestion was a Pinot Noir. It was perfect.
Best news, got reservation. Seated in garden tent. Not best choice for group. Extremely quiet. Better for couples interested in quiet evening. Ask for main dining room to enjoy festive ambiance. Wanted to be supportive of senior waiter but his agenda was to move quickly not to understand guest. Sadly think his time of being a waiter is over. Hope they can keep him, but find another position for him. Had holiday menu but rather have had advertised everyday menu. Rather support mom and pops but cheesecake factory would have been more enjoyable. Not terrible for us about evening. As another reviewer said, do you go out for "not terrible" ? I can see where this restaurant could be special.
We ordered appetizers, pasta and entrees. Pumpkin tortellini is to die for — wonderful. Bistecca less so, probably because I allowed the waiter to insist on how it should be cooked rather than how I prefer it. As it was New Year’s Eve, we weren’t allowed to order canollis for dessert. Oh well, maybe in the new year.
Overall, an enjoyable dinner in a great setting. I’d recommend this restaurant but suggest you order your food the way you want it (as always).
This has long been our favorite Pasadena restaurant when we want a special lunch, but I was all the more impressed with the way the staff adeptly provided quality food and service with a packed house on Dec. 30. I think it reflects a depth on many levels, from whoever accommodates large parties to the patience of the staff. I do want to add that every time I am there I am blown away by the quality and the presentation of the seafood.
Celestino Ristorante is our go-to place! Food is consistently delicious, and the serve staff (many of who, I may add, have been employed there for years) is always welcoming, friendly and professional. On a busy Christmas eve, Celestino himself works the room and helps arrange/rearrange tables for the next seating.
My husband and I love Celestino's and normally i would rate this place 5 stars.
We visited on Christmas Eve. They were very busy, as expected on a holiday night. Our waiter took our order. My husband ordered a ravioli and I ordered a pasta with shrimp dish. However, when my dinner arrived, someone else (other than our waiter) had brought our meal. My husband received his order correctly but I had received a pasta with crab. Without realizing it before I took a bite, it registered that this was not shrimp but crab. Our waiter also realized they brought the wrong order because as soon as I took a bite, he came right over and explained that the incorrect dish was delivered. He asked if I wanted my correct dish but i didn't want to wait as my husband was already eating his dinner so I kept the dish they had served me.
Anyway, the reason I am knocking off one star is because they added the increased entree price to our bill. I immediately said something as no one disclosed that the dish that was delivered was an additional $12. Normally, I would've had no problem paying if it had been disclosed from the start since it was their error, not mine. Anyway, our waiter immediately took the additional charge off, which was appreciated and shows you what great service this restaurant has. It was just slightly disappointing that this happened because it gave pause to a very happy evening.
Celestino is a classic Italian food. Been going there since they opened here in Pasadena. Now the menu hasn’t changed and is due for a change. All the desserts where not up to par. It didn’t feel like celestino level of cuisine. The service was rushed, which I really didn’t care for. This was the last time I eat there. It’s a shame.
This was our first visit to Celestino. We had reservations but arrived late because of heavy traffic. They were very accommodating, and we were seating right away, and served soon after were seated. We let the host know that we would be attending a play at Pasadena Playhouse, so they helped us out. There were 4 of us, each got something different. All of the food was reasonably good, but not great. Nothing stood out. We tried the gnocchi, the eggplant Parmesan, a squash-filled tortellini, and spaghetti pomodoro. The wait staff were very helpful, we used valet parking, so everything went smoothly and we were able to make our show in plenty of time.
I've always enjoyed this restaurant so I booked for a Christmas and birthday lunch with 8 friends the other day. What an organization disaster!! Really put a damper on the festive mood. When I arrived it restaurant was almost empty. The hostess couldn't find my Open Table reservation. Then directed us to a table toward the front which was one short of our reservation. Was told they'd squeeze a chair in. No sooner had I finished putting out some table decorations and placards than the hostess told us someone else had that table and tried to move our group of 9 to a table for 6. They finally stowed us like luggage in an empty private room which seemed cavernous. The food was good and the server was charming and attentive. They need to get their hostess act together.
Wonderful experience; my waiter (Italian, older gentleman) went out of his way to make us comfortable-actually, a 2nd waiter also assisted. Cocktalis excellent; food not so good-I ordered clam fettuccini (not on menu); the clams so tiny they were tasteless, some clam shells were empty. Sauce too thick, I should have ordered clear sauce. The waiter was SO kind when he asked about dessert, which we declined, he brought us a complementary fabulous cheese/strawberry dessert! Out of this world!! I particularly enjoy the ambience (I'm from Northern Italy!) and can[t wait to go back (but order something different). Thank you for a great dining experience, wait staff!!
For some, ambiance, "being seen," "music," and "talking over noise" take precedence. For us, we go to restaurants for the food -- no amount of "atmosphere" makes up for mediocre food. Celestino was a real surprise -- they served great traditional Italian dishes, a huge selection of daily specials, and spectacular desserts. We loved it, and will go again. It is a bit expensive, but definitely worth the cost. It was worth the one hour drive from our home!
Three of us went for a birthday celebration. The restaurant was chosen because it was a favorite of the person celebrating his birthday. The food and wine were good, but the service was horrible. We had to wait way too long to place our order and then wait again for an hour to get our food. One of us finally got up to find out what the problem was, but wasn't given
any good reason for the delay - the restaurant did not seem to be overly busy. In the past service has not been an issue, but it certainly was that night to the point where what was supposed to be a fun birthday celebration was marred by the poor service.
