A big disappointment. Slow service and uninspiring food.
Very surprised after Toronto Life reviews which said the opposite.
Would not return.
Celestin has never disappointed me in the 12+ years I have been dining at this restaurant. The food is locally grown, simple but ever so tasteful.
good decor. good service. very comfortable experience. not noisy. nice and relax. good food.
good food and service. service is good and special recommendation is excellent. Dessert selection is limited but delicious.
Had a work lunch with my coworkers there, and it was a pleasant surprise from the start. Sparkling clean place, elegant and chic, this French "infused" place is indeed a real gem in the neighbourhood. The pleasant staff, the tasty, rich food will definitely help creating an experience to remember. Will try the dinner menu experience for sure!
The menu is quite limited and we were informed when we got there that 2 items were not available. I asked if I could have one of the side dishes as a main course and was told No. After ordering we waited 40 minutes for my husband's appetizer ( I didn't order one) and then another 20 minutes for our entrees. At no time did the waiter offer to check on our orders for us, and only did so at my request. I noted that diner who had arrived after us were being served while we sat waiting. Waiting an hour for food when the restaurant is not overly busy is unconscionable. I will not go back to this restaurant again. This was a dinner to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary.
Even though the restaurant was not full it took us almost 2 hours to get our food. They seemed very disorganized. They had run out of basic menu items, such as the fois-gras, sparkling water, many of the wines... The food was good, but I don't think I would go back there because of the service.
We planned a special dinner for my mom's birthday.
The issues immediately. They ran out of lamb by 7pm. My husband & mom had beet salad & steak frites, which they enjoyed. My dad & I ordered scallop chowder with corn bread. It took 45 mins for starters to arrive, our soup had no corn bread, scallops were dry & rubbery. Waiter did try to make amends, by bringing a sm. portion of corn bread.
An hour later we were finally served our mains. My dad & I had Cornish hen, served with 5 peas, 1 hard Brussel sprout & no potatoes as indicated. Waiter made an attempt to right things by bringing a spicy potato that had no relevance to the dish. Needless to say the night was fine but tarnished. I will not dine there again, or recommend it to anyone!
Celestin's is a gem with excellent wait staff and great food.
I've been wanting to try this resto, but it doesn't have high chairs. We came for a weekday lunch, w/o baby, and had high hopes. It was a Prix Fix. Food was only ok, not enough depth of flavours considering we're talking French food! Service was also only ok - there were only 3 tables of guests there but he ignored us a lot. Also gave only ok service to us (a couple, had a glass of wine each), but amazing service to next table (3 ladies, started with a bottle of wine). Maybe the diff was the drinking. He was attentive, explained the menu, included commentary on food choices, joked, etc. with the other table, but just sufficiently polite with us. Anyway, food was only so-so and each course took a long time. The best thing was crème brulee.
Had a group of seven for brunch and it was fantastic! Our server was relaxed, personable, knowledgeable and helpful. The food was great, and the ambiance was wonderful. Will definitely be back!
Very pleasant server. Appetizers and entrees (steak and chicken) were very tasty, although chicken was slightly overcooked. Molten chocalate dessert was exceptional.
We had the special menu for those with Travelzoo vouchers, so we're unable to see what else was available. We will likely return.
Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We were seated in the front room with two other tables. Our only quibble was the noise level. No one was speaking loudly but the acoustics are such that we had a difficult time hearing each other across the table. We have sat in the larger room on other occasions and think the acoustics are better there.
The food was great as always. The stuffed hen was tender and delicious. The strip loins were very good but did have a fair amount of fat attached. And the pasta is always tender and flavourful.
Overall, we had a really enjoyable evening.
Fabulous food in a great setting. Outstanding service and exquisite ingredients make for a perfect dining experience.
the service was beyond slow. Even getting things like bread and water were slow. Our steaks took over an hour - and they came out undercooked. Then to add insult to the whole evening, the waiter argued with us about the steaks being undercooked!
In a city that boasts many mediocre French restaurants, Le Célestin stands out. The steak tartare was very, very good (and I am often disappointed by many tartares in this city) and the bouillabaisse was delicious.
Went to Celestin for Valentine's Day. Service was slow in a restaurant that was not full. Pate appetizer was quite good. Cornish Hen fricassee was cooked perfectly but had no flavour.
Not surprisingly, Celestin was completely booked for Valentine's Day. Good thing I made a reservation. Celestin is perfect for a romantic date. My beef tenderloin was grilled to perfection and the sweetbreads were cooked properly. The mini garlic ravioli was very unique since I haven't had a ravioli with this type of filling before. The sauce bordelaise brought it altogether. My girlfriend's braised leg of lamb fell right off the bone and the squid ink orzo went very well with the whole dish. Of course there were some service delays in between the courses since they were completely full. I will definitely come back here on another special occasion!
Interesting and recognizable food. Maybe St Valentine's Day not the best occasion to visit. Definite lack of flexibility in the menu. Wine choices limited and overpriced
Wow we had the best meal I have had in a while
Service was professional and friendly staff were familiar with the flavours in the food, how they were prepared and very happy to share these. The salmon tartare was ex cuisine, the boeuf bourguinon the best I have ever had and cooked in large pieces of veal cheek, the lime tart was creamy and just a bit sharp, a fitting end to a meal.
Through out presentation was spectacular. Coffee to finish, good and rich
I will be back!
The foods are as good as always. Excellence!
I made reservations for 10pm and they asked me and my date to come a little earlier. The place was empty, the service was unbelievable and the food was even better. Totally righteous experience :)
The food was good, but the menu choices were surprisingly limited. We found the prices were high so that undermined the value of the meal. The restaurant wasn't busy but the service was slow and the staff projected disinterest.
French inspired, local, very good food, friendly but efficient service, modern clean surroundings, good value. Three recent experiences - brunch twice and lunch once - all good.
Unfortunately we had a terrible dining experience here. we had 6 people, the food was below average (oysters were overly dressed, steak frites were bad, fish soup was bad,, the wine was really bad (ordered at 70 dollar burgundy that must have been skunked and while our server was nice, she disappeared for 20 mins at a time at the most in-oprtune times.
think the restaurant was off its game...
Friendly, but discrete service. Private corners for smaller tables. Good selection for the prix fixe menu. Great desserts!
We've been walking by Celestin for years, coming and going from the movie theatres, but we won't walk by any more! We'll go in for brunch, for lunch, for dinner, for a coffee and pastry . . . A thoroughly delightful experience with helpful but not intrusive service and simple but delicious french fare.
bread was stale, food not brought simultaneously to all guests. side dishes were not brought at time of entrees and had to remind waitress. very disappointing experience.
Celestin's served a fabulous brunch in an elegant ambience; my friend from New York city loved the food.
The food was good but not outstanding and fairly pricey. We waited an hour for our mains and were not offered bread or anything in the meantime, and the wait was acknowledged only after we had already waited 45 minutes. The wait staff was otherwise good.
It's not always true that you get what you pay for when it comes to fine dining, but Celestin did not disappoint this past Saturday evening. Although pricey, we had a terrific experience. There were 4 of us and we took turns sampling each other's meals. Of particular note was the steak and scallop tartars. Not surprisingly, the escargot was perfectly cooked as was my munkfish. The portions were generous by French dining standards and the wine list offers the choices you should expect from a restaurant of this calibre.
Don't go to Celestine if you are rushed. Expect a slower pace from a kitchen that emphasises quality over speed.
I highly recomment Celstine for anyone looking for a special dining expereince.
Always great food, superb wines and friendly service
This is a gem of a restaurant but be warned that the service can be slow. The food was fantastic but fortunately we were not in a rush, since the food took a while to come. This is not some where you want to go if you need to be in and out for your mid-day meal. However, since neither of us were working that day, we actually found the leisurely pace quite to our liking. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and it is going to become one of our regular lunch venues... as long as we have the time.
Well you can certainly tell that Pascal Ribreau is long gone from Celestin. I went there a few days ago with my wife on a Thursday night. It was pretty quite with only two or three other tables occupied. The food was all good. My wife and I shared a Scallop Tartare, and for mains I had Mushroom Papardelle, and she had Roast Monkfish with Paella style barley. Everything was good but it was not what I'd expect from a place like Celestin. Nothing really popped.
Where it really fell apart for me was the service side. The waitress, hostess, and bus staff all lacked the knowledge and confidence to deliver a good experience. None of them were rude or inconsiderate but again in a place like Celestin I expect much more polish on the service side.
The wonderful lunch special is not available on weekends. Too bad. So we had to settle for the brunch menu and chose the frisée salad - excellent, followed by the daily choice of quiche, which was quite ordinary. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable.
We've been to Celestin before, albeit several years ago. We were very disappointed. The food was okay, but fell far short considering the prices. It was an uninspiring menu with very few choices. The service was dismal. Our waitress admitted it was her second day, but that does not excuse the poor service. It was not busy at all and the pacing of the food was awful. We waited a long time for bread to arrive, then appetizers came immediately after that and entrees arrived almost as soon as the appetizers were cleared. Coffee came well ahead of dessert, and then we had to ask for and then wait for, the bill.
Overall, a disappointing experience.
The 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our brunch. Menu has a great selection, food is excellent and service very attentive and helpful.Highly recommended.
Celestin offers delicious food in a quiet atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the city core. Great for small groups and outdoor dining.
My husband and I went for a lovely summer luncheon at Celestine..as they only serve their superb crème brûlée at lunch. We ordered the Prix Fixe menu and loved all of our choices. We look forward to returning.
Not the food we remember under Pascal Ribreau, alas. And so, we will not return. Very few patrons on that long weekend Saturday evening and we chose a table as far from the central area as we could so we had an opportunity to catch up with the friends we had invited to join us. That part: ambience, service, were fine. Just not the food, which was not bad, and the menu read well; just not worth returning for.
