We arrived at 6:45 for a quiet 20th anniversary dinner, and were promptly seated by a charming, polite hostess. The restaurant wasn’t busy; there were two other parties seated at other tables nearby. The friendly hostess gave us water, then a young man said he’d be right with us. We waited a little over 25 minutes without further service, so we got up and left to ensure we could get to another restaurant before kitchens started to close.

Thursday eve was great choice! Restaurant was quiet for conversation, service was excellent, food outstanding, lovely wine and a table with a beautiful view. Crab cakes and Oyster stew were both excellent.

We loved our experience @ Cedar Knoll. We loved the music but the music was a little loud if you sat close up with a child with sensitive ears. We would have requested a seat a little further back but close enough to enjoy the ambiance of the music, food, & gorgeous view of the Potomac. The service was excellent too.

The restaurant is lovely, with historical furnishings and beautiful views of the Potomac River, at about Mt. Vernon. The service is absolutely first-rate -- friendly, knowledgeable, and tuned-in to what you're asking and saying. It also offers ample free parking. That said, I was disappointed with much of the food, and I think it's too expensive. (A lot of restaurants in Old Town Alexandria, particularly those featuring seafood and / or located on King Street, are similarly too expensive, but I note it in Cedar Knoll's case as general information.) I ordered two appetizers, because they looked good, because they were in the $11-18 range and because that allowed me to steer around the higher prices prices for entrees (which included two dishes for less than $30, seven for $30-$40, and one for over $40). I ordered the bacon-wrapped scallops and the Virginia Rockefeller (a baked oyster dish). In both cases, the staff preparing the food seemed not to grasp that shellfish have very delicate flavors that can easily be overwhelmed by additions and strong seasonings. The scallop flavor was almost obliterated by the bacon, and the oyster flavor pretty much disappeared beneath the heavily seasoned bread crumbs and a very odd prominence of salt. Dessert was wonderful, however. It was hard to choose between the four offerings. I can say that the chocolate pate I ordered (with candied blood orange, passionfruit sauce and hazelnut chocolate bark) was fantastic. The server was patient and helpful as I chose a glass of wine, and the one I ended up with went well with everything. Would I recommend Cedar Knoll? Yes, if the prices don't bother you and you avoid the shellfish dishes. And maybe I just hit restaurant on a bad night as far as the latter. I liked a lot about the experience. But I couldn't help feeling overcharged when, despite my efforts to maneuver around the most expensive dishes, I, as 1 diner, still ended up being out more than $72, including tax and tip.

We received a warm welcome and from there, a quiet booth, and of course a delicious dinner. I had a perfectly tender and delicious steak and my wife enjoyed a very meaty crab cake. The service was outstanding and we will most definitely will return.

We had the carrot ginger soup and venison, both of which were outstanding. Enjoyed sitting in room with fireplace—had not remembered the leather sofas by the fire that wld make it a nice setting for drinks. Also enjoyed the background music, which we had not remembered from previous visits.

Went to Cedar Knoll for an anniversary dinner. The temperature was just under 70° with a light wind blowing, and we sat on the patio. .We had two cocktails. Both were interesting and tasty. We each had a starter. I had the oysters Rockefeller, which were excellent. My wife had the autumn bisque soup which was just right. My wife has a New York strip steak which was very tender and well presented over a bed of brussels sprouts with mashed potatoes on a large bone. The potatoes were called bone marrow mashed potatoes and were a pleasant surprise. I had venison which was perfectly cooked and very tender over a bed of squash purée with a tasty side of bread pudding. We both had chocolate pate as a dessert , and a cappuccino for each of us. The noise from the parkway was a little distracting at first but not a problem later on. We were curious how the new chef would present the food, as we were not impressed with the food on previous visits. Every aspect of the food we had was delicious and well beyond our fondest expectations. The presentations were interesting and creative – definitely a cut above. The service was pleasant and understated. We look forward to a return visit to try more from the diverse menu.
