Overall it was a great meal - particularly the appetizer and dessert. Service was a bit slow with a long wait between appetizer and entree. Noise level was overall not bad but unfortunately I had an elderly deaf person sitting at booth behind me who basically shouted his conversation, making it hard to converse with my dinner partner.
The food was excellent! The service was terrible!. Our server was polite, friendly and kind but clearly over-worked. We waited for our order to be taken; we waited for our opening course; we waited for our main course; when asked if we wanted dessert, we waited for the dessert menu; then we waited for our dessert order to be taken; as our order for dessert was being taken (I'd finally figured it out...I asked for our check to be brought when our dessert was served); then we waited for our dessert to be served. All in all, we WAITED too much.
Other aspects: Parking is good. Ambiance is very warm and inviting.
We had a beautiful table by the window, with an outstanding young man serving us and during Restaurant Week with a beautiful nice selection of 3 course dinner. Everything was very tasty and perfect portion size. Desserts and wine were also great!
Superb brunch...I was really impressed from start to finish
Excellent; food & wine & table were just what we wanted.
Always a lovely time. Thanks!
Seems like it was backed up due to NYE. Took 15 min to be seen by a waiter and then got our apps before the cocktails we initially ordered. Dinner was OK, nothing to write home about. Overall just OK. We were sad about this but want to come back when it is not a special menu!
Food was undercooked; they managed to resolve and gave us discount so that was nice;
But overall cost vs menu options and “foodie” perspective
Make this a non-repeat.
Always a great place to have dinner with friends. Easy to relax and catch up with great food and drinks.
Everything was wonderful with a beautiful view.
absolutely phenomenal. each time i dine here the experience is amazing. food is perfection and ambience is wonderful. i highly recommend.
This place has a wealth of history and is an welcomed addition to the fine dining in Alexandria. Good food, good service, and good atmosphere. My only critique is with the cocktails, albeit I only had the Knoll' fashioned. I'd recommend sticking to wine.
A lovely restaurant, cozy quiet, food is interesting and well prepared & served.
I would recommend Cedar Knoll unless it is for a holiday event. We have been to Cedar Knoll on a number of occasions and typically the food and service make it a great value. However, this Christmas eve (2019) our experience was horrible. We spent two and a half hours in the restaurant due to inattentive and slow service, which caused us to miss other key events we had planned. We barely saw our waiter and I had to go to the bar to order drinks. An hour lapsed between our 1st and 2nd course and the food our $300 meal combined was perhaps enough food to feed one of us. Portion sizes were ridiculously small (not typical for Cedar Knoll). In short, the restaurant seemed ill-prepared.
We were very disappointed. The Christmas ambience was nice and the food acceptable but the service was absolutely terrible. A couple that came after us was consistently served first for every course and we were virtually ignored. Our finished meal dishes were on our table for 15 minutes before I had to ask a hostess to clear them. She cleared half of them and then another 10 minutes went by before I could snag another waiter to clear the rest. We will not be returning.
Probably the best, pre-set Christmas Eve meal my wife & I have ever enjoyed! Everything, from the meal itself, to the service & ambiance was superb! A real festive evening thanks to Cedar Knoll! Of special note, we would like to thank Khadija our server for making our Christmas Eve one to be remembered! Without her and her attentiveness, our night would not have turned out as well as it did. Thanks Khadija!
Cedar Knoll Always has Fantastic Food and our Christmas Eve 3 Course Meal Was Fantastic! We Sat at a Table in the Farthest End of the Restaurant that has the Patio Door and it was Splendid.Tables with children that were quiet and occupied with their incredible food was very nice.Side dishes were chosen from menu and served in share style bowls which was very family friendly Holiday perfect. The Servers, Chef and Management are Beyond Reproach A+++ for All of them on Our Memorable Christmas Eve Dinner 2019.
The best kept secret in the DC area.
Beautiful location; excellent service; very fine meal- well presented
I had never been to Cedar Knoll. My friends and I had a wonderful holiday get-together brunch. Everything was delicious.
Service was excellent from the moment we walked in the door. The food was excellently prepared, the view of the Potomac was beautiful and the entire experience was perfect. We went for brunch and the menu provided ample options.
The food was a bit cold and not very tasty - especially at the price point. Second, we were seated near a window and I was frozen - there is apparently single pane glass and no insulation. The booth seats are shot so that I sank down way too far. ( I had to boost myself by sitting on top of the pillows). The ladies room was even colder. Place is very pretty-looking though, the history interesting and the staff friendly. In all, disappointing. Maybe it’s a much better experience in summer when the dark and cold are not such factors.
We enjoyed a fabulous meal at Cedar Knoll prior to attending our candlelight tour of Mount Vernon! What a wonderful discovery for us! Not only was the historical significance of the restaurant a great way to start the evening, but we very much appreciated the ambiance, the gracious service, and the beautiful presentation! Our sincere compliments to the chef for the creativeness of the entree selections and for making comfort food taste especially amazing! We can't wait to join you again! Thanks for an enchanting evening!
I reserved a table of 10 for a promotion ceremony. It’s a very easy drive (~1.5 miles) from the Mount Vernon estate & the view of the Potomac is picturesque - which is clearly why this is a favored spot for weddings. The restaurant is a sit down, course by course meal type of dining - so the wait staff will take orders for appetizers & bring them out before you order your main course and the same goes for dessert. The menu is wonderfully unique & you can taste the talent & quality that goes into each item. Our party ordered dishes of the duck crepes, venison, veal, piranha and mussels. Every guest was extremely satisfied with their course. Desserts were memorable as well - the pecan pie and spice cake & custard were big hits. I’d recommend this place if you’re planning a formal event or want a different change of pace for an evening meal.
Great service. Food was excellent.
The food has been better, but enjoyed the ambience.
Lovely brunch in a charming, colonial setting...especially enjoyed the fireplaces lit up on a cool day.
This rating reflects that most of our dishes were served less than lukewarm. We had dined at the restaurant a few times and have always had a very enjoyable experience. We were a party of 5 on Saturday evening. A hot spiced cider and three of our five dinners were served less than lukewarm. The lamb dish was described as cold and tough. We waited longer than expected for our entrees so we don't know if the problem was with the kitchen or server. We had a very enjoyable evening visiting among friends but were very disappointed with the temperature of our servings. Unfortunately, we likely won't return.
Meat was cold service was marginal. Had large party that the servers in the room were consumed with. Used to go here a lot and was disappointed with what it offers for the price
Wonderful Thanksgiving meal... all the fixings included.
This was our first time to the restaurant opting to go on Thanksgiving. So many restaurants resort to a buffet on this holiday. Not here, there was an extensive menu with many courses, everything offered was brought to the table and served. We were delighted. One favorite on the menu was a squash soup, the turkey came sliced on a platter with plenty of gravy in a pitcher on the side. There where were 7 side dishes with the entree. We are eager to return to the restaurant to try on a “regular” day. There’s a river view from the restaurant & even a room with a functioning fireplace.
Best food and presentation for a Thanksgiving dinner we have had,
We had an excellent Thanksgiving day dinner. I look forward to returning to this restaurant
We had Thanksgiving dinner. The food was wonderful, each table had an array of gourmet sides along with a platter of turkey. Very nice special seasonal cocktails. The wait staff did a great job dealing with a full house and a lot more dishes than a normal meal.
First time at cedar knoll. Service was great. We had brunch, the food was good.
Fantastic as always. Visited after a Sunday trip to mount Vernon. But two small things, I wish it was more clear on the website that they were ONLY serving brunch when we visited. We were there @1:15 on a Sunday, I would have bought by then surely it would be lunch, but not a huge deal. What was off-putting was the less than warm greeting we received from the host. She acted bothered that we arrived early(with no expectation to be sat early) and I had to tell her the name and reso count she did not ask. Also, her skirt was so short it made me very uncomfortable. Especially when this restaurant requested the host who seats a table to reach across the tables and grab glassware to fill with water. Yikes.
Delicious brunch! Service excellent! Lovely spot!
We celebrated our good friend’s 95th birthday with Sunday Brunch. All four of us really enjoyed our different plates and dessert was extra special. Servers were especially helpful and kind. Six months ago my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with 100 guests at Cedar Knoll. It was a perfect day for everyone. So we definitely will be back.
Such attention to detail.
We had a delightful brunch experience. The food was very delicious. We enjoyed the risotto and the frittata and would have liked to try a number of other dishes as well. The service was very good. The ambience is very quaint and steeped with history. We are going to try dinner there soon.
