Cavatappo Grill Ratings and Reviews
We had a family get-together brunch - 8 adults- was very nice. We had lots of space, good service, not much noise and they let us relax and enjoy our meal - did not rush us. Everyone enjoyed their food - we ate omelette , shrimp salad, eggs Benedict and sandwiches - everything was good. I would go again.
It was the first time my husband and I ate there and we thought the food and service were excellent. However, the atmosphere was a little run-down and we almost didn't stay when we first walked in. But again, the food was really good and the service was superb! I would categorize this as a very good neighborhood gem. We plan to go back and listen to Jazz some time!
Wow! Cavatappo is going downhill each and every time I dine there. I'm not quite sure where management finds their waiters/waitresses, but they are surely not trained at all ... dined there Sunday with friends, ordered the fried olives to start ... waiter (seemed stoned/drunk?) brings cold olives out ... then proceeds to explain that the olives are made before hand and are served that way. I know that is not true, b/c I order the olives every time I am there. Horrible service, totally overpriced ... not worth the visit anymore. Too bad. Will have to walk a little farther down First Avenue to find better, more reasonable restaurants ... and there are many.
This was a Sunday brunch, the day before Memorial Day. We had eaten there several times over the past year and had found it good value and pleasant. Yesterday was a huge disappointment - we were 3 and there were only 3 other people in the restaurant. We ordered from the brunch menu (too basic for words), the food took nearly 1/2 hour to reach us. The pancakes were thick, dry and lukewarm. The grilled vege platter for the 3 of us arrived dry, limp and room temp. There was no apology for the poor service. This is way too bad. We had enjoyed previous, tasty, well prepared meals there and had relied on it as a neighborhood 'reliable'.
I used to love this neighborhood restaurant and have been there many times over the years. But in my past 3 visits I noticed higher prices, and extreme reduction in portion size. Unacceptably small. A bad combo. When I asked the waiter if what I received was a normal size portion of fish, he made a face and took it away, and told me I was not going to have to now wait while the chef figured out what to do. 20 minutes later they delivered my platter with a normal size serving, and I was satisfied. But I was not treated nicely. The same thing happened with the lamb shank the last time I was there... extremely small compared to other visits.. the waiter agreed.. eventually brought me a normal size portion. They seem to be skimping on portions to see if they can get away with it, which is really disappointing. We went on jazz night (Monday) and I enjoyed the music. But I'm not sure if I will ever go back.
I was disappointed with this experience. The food was not as good as prior reviews indicate. The maitre d was rude and the restaurant itself was uncomfortable due to ever fluctuating temperatures - the door was left open creating a draft for our table and we had to repeatedly ask for it to be closed but at the same time the heating vent over our table (that in itself was kind of gross for eating) was blasting directly on our table. The better answer in mid-May would have been to have had cooler air circulating. But more disappointing was the service. Despite having a reservation we had to wait with no welcome or accomodating acknowledgement (and we had an elderly person in our party) and we waited over an hour for our entrees with no explanation. One of our party had a severe garlic allergy and was dismissed by the Maitre d as being in the wrong restaurant and/or that the dishes didn't have "that much garlic" - rather than what most restaurants do which is to offer a couple of garlic free alternatives. It was a special occasion and because it is a neighborhood place we were eager to give it a try but we won't go back. The pasta dishes were good but not good enough to make up for the disappointments that contributed to the overall negative experience. Also should be noted we were a party of 8 and while everyone tried to make the best of it especially since it was a special occasion, everyone in the group felt the same tension in the poor service.
Went for Saturday brunch and while I really like the venue and the wonderful life music , the food was so bad that we barely could eat anything. Ordered salad and sandwich and it was tasteless and then bread was old. Although the waiter was nice, he did not pay attention when we sent the food back and charged full price. Woul really like to go back but not until they improve the quality of food.
The service was horrible.
Our initial waiter just left in the middle of our meal. No one came over to say they were now replacing him.
No one came over to ask if everything was OK or if we needed anything additional after the main course was served.
After the entrée, no one bothered to come over and ask if we wanted coffee or dessert and waited almost 20 minutes to get someone's attention to get the check.
Will not return
This was my first visit to Cavatappo Grill and it's a great find. The food is delicious and the portions are very generous. Small plates are a great option as the starters are huge and I had to quickly change my choice after the starter arrived. There is live music most of the week which is a very nice touch and the noise level is very appropriate to dining. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My friend and I hope to visit again soon.
A Neighborhood Restaurant with Foodie Dishes. The specials caught our attention on this visit and I enjoyed my shot rib ravioli. My partner described it as a meat dumpling which it did bring to mind although the meat based sauce was purely Italian. I also sampled the veal special and I was not disappointed. As an extra bonus, as we wrapped up our dinner, a guitarist started a very nice set of light jazz music which only helped the digestion.
I visited this restaurant because of a jazz concert, this restaurant hosts small jazz combos, and it is a very intimate setting for music. I really enjoyed the dinner, I rarely get good Italian food outside Italy, most of the time restaurants use too much oil and serve pasta drowned in sauce, this was more the Italian way, less sauce, not oily, just right for the food. I also appreciated that in addition to serving wine by the glass, they also offered wine in a small carafe. The waiters were knowledgable about the food and wine.
