Amazing seafood.... sad to see this wonderful restaurant close
We had a fantastic experience at Catch for a special occasion. The service was excellent and the food was very tasty. They treated us very well, bringing a few surprises from the chef to make it a memorable evening. The space is lovely too within one of Calgary's historic buildings. It's true - you can get great seafood in landlocked Calgary.
The only drawback: one member of our party has trouble with stairs. I asked if there was an elevator and was told only a service elevator. It would have been better to direct us to the adjacent hotel escalators and elevator than have us climb the stairs. We didn't let that spoil our evening, however.
Thanks for a great night!
Fantastic food, Fantastic service! Why did I wait so long to go?
Arctic Char belly and Tuna / Sablefish was incredible. Service was very good, and overall, a very wonderful experience.
We enjoyed an early Valentine's Day dinner at Catch on the weekend. Our server was very attentive from the moment we arrived. The food was excellent - attractively plated and absolutely delicious. They were very accommodating of particular dietary requests and surprised us by generously offering to compensate when my first entrée selection was not available (they had just run out of sablefish but my second choice, the ling cod, was fantastic!) I also appreciate the acknowledgment of sustainably caught ingredients. We would highly recommend Catch Restaurant Upstairs and in particular the scallop starter, sea bass or ling cod entrees, and crème brulee. Yum!
Great dinner. Superb service. We arrived at 6 pm vexause we couldn't get a reservation for any other time on Open Table. We sat for 2 hours enjoying our dinner and nobody else came in. Would really think before I'd use Open Table again.
Food was excellent but portion sizes were very small. The portion size combined with the price made it very expensive and low value for the price paid. Too many other options that makes a return visit unlikely.
Everything and everyone was absolutely fantastic! Can't wait to go back again.
Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Actually we dined at the main level and all was fantastic! Mussels cooked to perfection big plump delectable Mussels......service impeccable!
Waitress was extraordinary!
Overall, the meal was good and bad. I would still recommend Catch but I will say that our experience last December was much better. They changed the menu and the most important item (Seafood tower) was removed.
Good: Fillet of Beef was amazing and is sourced locally (mushrooms and potatoes were also very good). The Oysters and Arctic Char was also amazing. The server was great as well. The lobster was good, not great though. Cocktails were great.
Bad: Menu has changed and is very small. They also removed the Seafood tower - this was amazing and can't believe they removed it. The scallop appetizer cost $20 and only came with 2 very small scallops! The snow crab appetizer cost $17 and came with a few string sections of crab on some quinoa, very plain.
Not a major issue but the lights in the restaurant were too bright for an evening dinner and for a Saturday evening it was very slow. A couple xmas parties in the private rooms but the upstairs only had a couple tables filled.
Great service from Amanda throughout the meal, very personable and helpful. Lobster mac was wonderful and the sablefish was perfectly cooked. We'll be back soon!
Excellent food and atmosphere. Really enjoyed our meal.
The food was quite tasty, we thoroughly enjoyed the spread. Just found the server to be quite slow considering the place wasn't very busy. We waited for every drink, which I feel shouldn't be that way at such a nice place.
Best service in Calgary, food was really creative.
We had such a lovely evening at Catch! The food was meticulously prepared with care and passion. The chef came to our table a few times to discuss the dishes we had chosen. The amuse bouche was a delightful pumpkin soup with goat cheese. I highly recommend the sable fish, tuna tartare and scallops!
The food was absolutely incredible and so was the service! The wait staff were exceptionally knowledgeable on the food and wine they had to offer. The chef even came to our table to deliver an unforgettable pumpkin soup before the food we ordered came out... overall a fantastic experience! Can't wait to go back!
PUZZLED! We travel to Calgary at least twice a year and always look forward to dinner at Catch Upstairs. We have never been disappointed in the past . HOWEVER, this visit left us puzzled. The food was, as always, excellent. Yet, at 7:30 on a Saturday evening the restaurant was essentially deserted. We were the 5th table occupied out of roughly 25 tables. There was NO energy in the establishment - zero. The regular server (Ives) was out on vacation - that was the explanation by the host for such a quiet evening - I am not buying that explanation. The server was sub-par - there was only one for the whole restaurant. In the middle of our meal, she used a spray disinfectant to clean the tables next to and behind our table. That does not enhance the dining experience. Additionally, she kept nibbling on a dessert which she kept hidden behind the bottles on the bar and also was eating the uneaten bread which she had removed from our table. Amazingly, this occurred at a restaurant of Catch's caliber (C$200 for dinner). This was not Tim Horton's. After dinner, we checked other Open Table reviews and noted that other customers had expressed concerns about Catch. My wife and I echo those concerns, if a restaurant only fills 20% of its tables, it will not economically survive. I do not know why the downturn. It saddens me. The rest of 8th Street was vibrant, as was Catch Downstairs. On our next trip to Calgary, we intend to consider exploring other restaurant venues unless we see a sharp and consistent uptick in the Open Table comments. We sincerely hope that such an uptick occurs.
This restaurant offers superb food and service. All of our multi-age group were impressed with their dinners (typically very hard to achieve).
Catch is certainly worthy of its Best Restaurant rating by Avenue Magazine. The offerings above the Oyster Bar rank among the best in the city.
I've always liked Catch, but the value just isn't there anymore. The actual meal was fabulous, but the portion sizes are on the smaller side and the prices are a lot on the higher side. All in all though, I still really enjoy this restaurant, but won't be visiting too often.
Amazing food. Great ambiance. Was very quiet early on a Friday night, which was great for intimate conversation. Service was good without being rushed nor too dragged out. Would recommend.
Excellent service - very helpful with the Oysters and wine recommendations.
Still serves wonderfully prepared seafood, only questioned the inclusion of fries with the whole lobster.
Really enjoyed our evening at Carch. The Chef personally delivered two of our courses. The crab appetizer was really inventive -served warm and delicious. I had the catch of the day- tuna and it was fabulous.
They have a new menu out!
Very creative, great taste, good cakue for fresh seafood.
Service was excellent! 10 out of 10
In short, our experience was poor - and I'm being kind. We were shown to our table, then waited easily 15 minutes before a server even showed up. When she did show up she was clearly pre-occupied by something. Her knowledge of the menu was disgraceful, the catch of the day (swordfish) was not available, and the table that sat behind us was told the catch of the day (catfish) was not available - yes two different answers. The wait for food was in my opinion a bit excessive and when it did arrive it was cold - not exaggerating, it was straight up cold and yes it was intended to be a hot dish. So basically if you want to wait for your meal, be served by someone with better things to do, and get your food cold then by all means the Catch is your place. I give it no stars.
Received well at the door, asked us if we were a reservation by name. Chef was talking to a table for special meal prep when we came in. Great menu selection, service was very professional, new the menu very well. Food was presented great and tasted great!
Great selection of oysters, a nice menu and good wine list.
I had a wonderful 20th year Anniversary. Everything was perfect. The management did a wonderful job! Champagne was excellent. Pea soup exquisite, oysters fantastic, and the tuna was delicious for entrees. Naked Lobster was very good! The cake for dessert with pistachios was well liked. My cappuccino was very good. I continue to see why catch is one of the best restaurants in Calgary. The food, service, presentation and taste continues to be of the caliber of many good restaurants that I have visited in the world. This is why I continue to return to Catch since its opening.
The restaurant made my 20th wedding anniversary great!!
Great atmosphere and service. Place was quite quiet but it was mid-week and early evening. Food was awesome but quantity for the dollars could have been better. Would try it again.
Like a tomb. No vibe or ambiance at all. Waitstaff doing best they could to make it acceptable. Has seen better days obviously.
Great food, great presentation, Server Eve? Was great!
Nice wine by the glass!
Upstairs was nearly empty at 7:45 on a Thursday night. The emptiness was so disheartening we chose to eat downstairs which was just ok. Would not recommend the place and would be surprised if it's still in business next year.
Disappointed that fish was overcooked, but the server took care of this. Also avoid the dessert as they are just adequate.
Have been to Catch many times over the past number of years. Always enjoy the excellent food and attentive service. Wine list is good but could be larger and provide more variety. We like the quiet relaxed atmosphere and sophisticated ambience. Overall, it's a 'goto' restaurant for us.
Service here is always excellent. Top notch. Food is just okay and is way overpriced. My last two visits they didn't have the wine in stock I ordered. Not happy about that. I won't be back.
We chose CATCH for a special occasion . . just the two of us. The ambience was very good. We arrived around 6 PM (maybe a little early for the downtown Calgary crowd) and left around 7:30. There was never, during that time, more than 5 tables occupied . . a shame because the food and service was excellent. We'll go back in a heartbeat . . it was that good!!
Naked lobster is to die for! Saturday nite at 6 is the time to go!
Hard to believe this was once a top restaurant in Calgary. We had the tasting menu; soup was barely warm, appetizer was bland, poached salmon was awful - some bland salmon swimming in a bowl of milk with peas, carrots and pieces of under-cooked potato, the gnocchi was better but dessert was an assembly line dish. Service was good. We will not be returning.
We chose the Big Taste as an opportunity to go to a restaurant we hadn't tried and wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. Catch has (had?) a wonderful reputation and we were expecting a magical experience on par with River Cafe or Rouge. Our experience could only be described as mediocre which was very disappointing given Catch's reputation in the city. The food should have been innovative, or at least interesting, and full of flavour. Instead it was ordinary and bland. Salmon and lingcod were totally banal choices at a restaurant that I thought was known for exceptional seafood. One dish was supposed to come with gnocchi, which we were interested to try, but instead received polenta. When we were asked how our food was, we suggested that perhaps they had run out of gnocchi? The server returned saying that the chef made a "special" type of gnocchi out of cornmeal... How strange that it was fried and served like polenta. I was left being made to feel stupid for asking. The server seemed busier than she could handle and we were often left without water or wine. I can't even say we were ignored because we were having the Big Taste and we weren't considered lucrative–we paid to have oysters as an appetizer and drank 3 glasses of wine each. If the point of the Big Taste was to attract new audiences and to showcase the food and ambience, it failed miserably at Catch. What a disappointment given the array of wonderful restaurants to choose from during the event. Catch seems like a place that tourists who may not know better would go to out of convenience, but that is no longer relevant for Calgarians given our vibrant restaurant and food scene. If a person could request a return on a restaurant bill, I would have.
I went for the Big Taste event and the food was really fresh, and flavours were amazing.
Catch upstairs is one of my personal favorite restaurants. Seafood tower is just simple phenomenal. Food in this place has never disappointed me. Have recommended this place to my friends several times already.
