Very lively business lunch venue especially for life science folks
This part of Cambridge doesn't have the energy of Central Sq on a weekend, but that was actually a plus. We had six people for a family gathering, and the noise level allowed normal conversation. The menu has something for everyone, and the food was uniformly excellent. No complaints about the service, either. The ambiance is urban modern -- glass and metal but still welcoming.
everyone was very friendly and welcoming. the food was good. a couple of misses but the burger was great as was the pasta.
First time we’ve gone for brunch. Food was great. Portions huge. Service outstanding
Very good spot for a business meal, or a date. Tables offer adequate privacy. If you are looking for cozy and intimate this might not be the right spot. Food is creative and good. Noise level was tolerable. If there were blaring TV's we kept away from them. Service was surprisingly attentive.
My party of 4 dined last evening at Catalyst. Even though the service was unusually slow, we enjoyed our first bottle wine, salads, and appetizers. I was encouraged to order the duck breast special and the three others had salmon. My duck was inedible. I could hardly cut through it and after a few bites, and having my husband try it, we discovered that it was raw inside. Our waitress finally came over and offered to serve me something else, but by that time everyone was just about finished and I was eating the risotto accompaniment so I said I was okay, but she should let the kitchen know. We finished our second bottle of wine and shared some desserts which were delicious. On our way home I started having awful stomach issues which ended up keeping me awake all night! Must have been the raw duck. Now I feel reluctant to return to Catalyst which we have enjoyed in the past. I emailed the restaurant but they never replied to my message.

Fun spot for brunch! Loved the Catalyst Cafe bakery items!
Both entrees (scallops and cod) and starter (lobster ravioli) were incredibly good and well concepted. we've been to Catalyst several times and its always great. Creative and tasty, perfectly prepared and cooked. Cool interior as well, and prices very reasonable for downtown Boston foodie quality. Great service as well.
Food and service were excellent as usually. A definite go to place of mine.
Our food was all delicious, and we had good and fast service. We'll be back!
Great meal - all three courses. Our waitress was helpful and attentive to our pace. Will definitely go back.
We went during restaurant week. The hostess did not know about restaurant week and we needed to ask her to go inquire, after which she brought back menus. We ordered from the R.week menu - DELICIOUS appetizer (salmon belly) and main dish (chicken/lemons/barley). The desserts seemed like they were defrosted from a Trader Joe's package. We didn't even finish them. The waiter was kind but left a long time between checking on us (we waited what seemed like a long time for our wine) and after we gave him our credit cards at the end of the night, he brought us back someone else's! I would give it another try, because the aps and mains were really great, but there seems to be a few things they need to iron out.
Overall the food and ambience was good but the food was just above average but not as good as we expected. Service was friendly but a bit slow and lax. We would go again as we found the overall space and it’s design very nice and a place you want to hang out...although they need to increase the alcohol in their mixed drinks which lacked alcohol and were too fruity.
Food is good, not great (chicken pretty tasteless, though nicely soft and juicy). Ambience feels cold: industrial room, large grey walls without ornament, dim lighting at night. Service was excellent. Cost was appropriate to much better food. Will not return.
Overall, the Catalyst has become one of our favorite places. However, the tempora battered haricot verts were taken off the appetizer menu. NOW the potato puffs were just taken off. It's getting to be heart breaking because it's nice to know the comfort food you rely on. Tony is a great bartender/server. He will be a reason to return.
We were seated right away and loved the ambiance. Our appetizers were great, as was my entree (my husband’s was just mediocre).
A couple of things really brought this meal down:
1) We went during Restaurant Week but only were offered that menu when we asked. The tables around us didn’t appear to know it was Restaurant Week and were never given the menu. Instead they were offered some of the Restaurant Week menu items as “specials” at significantly higher rates.
2) Dessert was totally sub par. My husbands cheesecake was dry but the worst part was the cookie plate I ordered. They were dry, downright crunchy and misshapen. Honestly, if I made those cookies at my house I would throw them out before offering them to guests.
Great night out with my husband!
Pros -- great menu selection, quality ingredients, great ambiance, front host was polite
Cons -- Waiter was very irritable, unprofessional and rude. We were the first table to be seated before the lunch time rush and yet our food came in after everyone in the vicinity was served. He never bothered to check up on us. We had to inquire about our food with other Waiters. He never even bothered to apologize. When the bill came, he rudely and casually tossed the bill on our table without the standard: "Thank you, whenever you're ready". The Waiter was bald, unshaven and a bit on the heavy side. Please train this Waiter up before you subject him to anyone other diner.
Other than that, I think its a good restaurant.
Food was awesome. Waiter was very knowledgeable about menu. Overall ervice was disorganized and slow.
Great food. But really, only a $ price rating? Should be $$.
Nice place, nice staff, nice service. The food is hit and miss - salads and sandwiches are really not great, especially not at this price, but the homemade pasta dishes are pretty great.
Terrific! Hostess and waitstaff were just the right amount of attentive and the food was delish. Thanks!
Honestly, the best meal I've had in as long as I can remember. The cuisine was original and creative, yet totally relatable. Great atmosphere as well. Looking forward to returning soon.
Clean, spacious, gracious.
So wonderful, my favorite place in Cambridge, a must visit!!!
Stellar All Around. Every dish we had was highly imaginative and creative, but not wacked out -- all the ingredients and flavors worked together in a masterly way. We also liked our very helpful and friendly server who steered us to just the right entrees and desert choices, all of which we went crazy over. The atmosphere is very cool warehouse-sheek, with beautiful wood on the walls and a cool linear see-through gas fireplace in the front to sit and have drinks in front of. Honestly, the food quality is outstanding and better than other high end places we've been in Boston that charge much more. We highly recommend Catalyst.
The food is high-quality, but the plates were a little small for a full meal.
Perfect in all ways
Amazing food, perfect for a date night
We like the food, the ambience, the service, and the short drive to Catalyst for us. It's a big place with a couple of different seating/dining areas, and an attractive bar scene. The frequent change in cuisine also keeps us coming back.
Catalyst is DEPENDABLY excellent!
Amazing cauliflower soup with fried capers. I couldn't get enough. Also really enjoyed the kale caesar salad.
Catalyst was a good choice for a work outing in a group of 5. The service was very good, especially considering we had some special requests at our table.
Ambiance was probably the best in the area. Perfect for something nice but not pretentious.
Plenty of drink options!
The servings were a healthy size, and the quality seemed mixed depending on the dish. Salmon was great, celery root pasta was great, burgers were pretty good, and there was a meat pasta that was just ok.
We enjoyed the food, we enjoyed not having to shout while we ate, we liked the atmosphere at Catalyst. Service was good. It was a very relaxed brunch.
My date really enjoyed the interior design. She loved the atmosphere and food. Definitely take her again.
My self and a group of friends went here for my birthday and everyone had a great time! There was plenty of space at the table for the group, there were nine of us. Brian was an amazing server! He was funny, personable and attentive. The food was delicious and would highly recommend it to anyway who’s looking for a nice evening out.
Service was super slow and we were among the only ones in the restaurant
The fish dishes were disappointing. Best food on menu is the burger. Soups are good too.
Three of us ate lunch at catalyst recently. Two of us got the salmon-cooked perfectly with
delicious sides. I think the fish itself would have benefited from a good searing w/some spices.
Our niece ordered the steak and it was delicious and generously portioned.
The wait person was very accommodating, funny, friendly and we enjoyed the repartee. We would definitely return again.
Our second time dining there and they were very accommodating especially after an order mix up that was quickly resolved. Food and overall ambiance was great. Highly recommended.
