About Catalina Restaurant
Simple elegance. Old-world charm. Creative cooking.
Step into Mario’s Catalina Restaurant and you instantly feel the hustle of the city fade. Soothing colors, soft lighting, crisp linens and fragrant aromas all conspire to transport you to a more tranquil setting.
While Catalina’s ambiance is undeniably appealing, dining out really is all about the food! That’s why co-owner and chef, Mario Flores, went to great lengths to create a menu of Spanish and Cuban dishes that complement each other.
The result: authentic Latin food masterfully prepared. Add to that attentive service and a chilled glass of simply the best Sangria in town, and you’re well on your way to a memorable experience!

Catalina Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time here. The first was amazing. This was almost an abomination. We start at the front and no one greeted us to seat us we must’ve sat there for over five minutes. The waiter was very unfriendly but I guess he was busy with the food this time was quite mediocre. We had to send the state back because it was veiny and very tough they did take it back and exchange it without question. I had Mario’s favorite… The red snapper in planting crumbs with shrimp and pork. The shrimp and pork we’re OK nothing to write home about while the snap of a slightly better. We waited over an hour for our entrées I thought they would never come. We waited 20 minutes for the check I thought that would never come. It was definitely at all tonight but it was bad enough that I won’t be back
We have been loyal customers to Catalina since they were located on 33rd St. we try to go every few months. You can get the same food for less money elsewhere but I've always liked the atmosphere and Mario's warm welcome. We were early diners and the waiter began to seat us in a dark back room. Even after I told him I couldn't read the menu and my partner complained it was too cold, he left us there. The rest of the place was place was empty. Then as people came in they crowded them in around us. We should have left. Our octopus appetizer was very good. I had the fried pork chunks which I've had many times there. The pork was good but the onions on them were raw and there was no lime to squeeze on it and no waiter around to ask. Beans were bland. My partner had an overcooked palomino steak. Both came with two small plantains. At those entrée prices that is not acceptable. Service used to excellent there but not anymore. I could not even understand the guy explaining the desserts choices and he stared at the wall anyway. We waited 20 minutes foe espresso. I did not see Mario on the way out or I would have said something. I sometimes see him at Mom's Kitchen for breakfast. I will not be back. I can go to Las Vegas or DonArturos and get the same meal for half the price and have waiters actually wait on me. Sadly we have been patrons for years.
Food was excellent. Waiter seemed lost. Couldn’t get orders straight. Never came back after finally serving table. Do not do the deserts. While my Flan was good and my friends coconut ice cream was also at $12 ea they are out of their minds. This is not the 4 seasons.
And was charged forc3 deserts instead ofv2. Was easy to spot error on check.t
We were in from out of town and were looking for a spot for dinner before seeing a show. We enjoy Cuban food and figured we would see if we could find a good spot. We found Catalina on TripAdvisor and gave it a shot. We sat outside in a lovely covered patio area. The main road is right there but we barely noticed it. The servers were excellent and very kind. Mario came and checked up on us a few times during the meal to make sure we were happy. The food was excellent! Plantains with a chimichurri topping were brought out compliments of the house. We shared beef empanadas (outstanding!) and some octopus for an appetizer and then split the skirt steak with garlic shrimp (with rice, black beans, and plantains). Everything was excellent! Washed it all down with a glass or two of Rioja and some mojitos (very good). A great meal overall. It was a bit pricey ($170 for 2 people including drinks) but otherwise no complaints!
The worst food I have ever had. The service level was extremely low, and they tried to cheat us on the bill with charging us extra money. When we asked why the bill was so high, they couldn’t explain it. They made us look cheap. So I don’t recommend anyone to go there!!
Wonderful food and the staff makes you feel very welcome. We were there on a Monday night so the atmosphere was quiet and we got lots of attention.. The prices are on the high side so, at least for us, this will have to be a special occasion place. Still, it is a great place to celebrate those occasions.
Still not inexpensive, but worth it. The best sangria (I had the white this time) and mojitos. The 2 paeia eaters have been ordering it here for years and still declare it the best they've ever eaten. They sample my selections which vary, but stick with the paeia. I had the pork filet in light sauce this time. Delicious. The staff are warm and friendly, always available and efficient. Did I mention the complementary amuse bouche (banana chip slices with a tantalizing sauce this night) followed by a light and delicious house salad (nice and small so that you have room for the entrée). We normally start with the empanadas (so tasty), but since 2 of us were leaving town the next day, we passed this time so we could finish the entrées. We love Catalina for celebrating a birthday, getting together with special friends or the last night in town.
Mario’s Catalina Restaurant is fabulous. The vibes, service, the food and the appreciation of the entire staff is top notch.
We never have a bad time or a bad meal. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who is not enjoyed it. This is our go to restaurant for special occasions or for every day dining. Thank you Mario!
As always, Catalina Cafe was superb. We had family visiting from out of town and we knew exactly where we wanted to bring them. Everything was delicious, starting with mojitos and signature sangria, the huge appetizer sampler. Entrees of Oxtail, Osso-Buco, whole Snapper and Mario’s Pork and ending with to die for Quattro Leches!, Pumpkin Cheesecake and Cuba coffees. A must visit in Fort Lauderdale. You will love the old world decor, attentive service and memorable experience.
The food is definitely a notch above most Cuban restaurants. The service is warm but not overly efficient, but it was a slow night and that is not uncommon in many places when they are not busy. As for value, it's about double what you'd pay at local Cuban restaurants and in fact higher than the same meal in NYC which is saying something. I guess they figure they can charge more because they have crystal chandeliers everywhere.
It's one thing to have delicious, authentic Cuban Cuisine and love it, but it's another to have the restaurant staff treat you like family on your first visit. We throughly enjoyed our experience. Being tucked away in a romantic nook made for an even better date night. I can't wait to go back to this restaurant again, and again!
