Server was almost robotic....food was really poor quality..beans were like soup ..burnt ends were not true burnt ends...very disappointing
I ordered a combination plate of brisket, which was very dry, and burnt ends, which were overcooked and thick with a ridiculously sweet bbq sauce I would never have chosen. When the (tiny) baked potato is the best part of your meal, it’s time to close the book on a restaurant.
We had an awesome night at Catalina BBQ. The views were beautiful, the food was delicious, and they had lots of options to choose from. I had a green chile mac n' cheese topped with burnt ends that was amazing. Highly recommend.
Wow great BBQ! Try the burnt ends and you will not be disappointed!
A quiet Tuesday evening following the thunderstorms - sat on the beautiful patio despite the remaining puddles and admired the colors as evening fell. Service was fantastic. Sampled most of the BBQ options, sharing with my colleague. Really it was all quite tasty but the burnt-ends stole the show from everything else! Weren't overly crusty, still tender but with amazing flavor! Brisket was quite good, pulled pork pretty good. The smoked chicken was our least favorite - kind of dry. Loved the 3 BBQ sauces they bring for you, with different flavors and heats. The bourbon corn side was yummy but didn't really have any bourbon flavor profile. Beans were QUITE good. And the mescal smoky margarita rocked! I'll be back!
Very average BBQ. Smoke was barely present. Sauces were unremarkable.
Morgan was a great server.
The food was good, as usual. I had the carne asada quesadilla which was too greasy this time, but tasty. My husband had his usual pulled pork sandwich which was very good, and his buddy had a burger. The fries and cornbread and muffins were hot and delicious.
I'm really upset at the waitress we had. There was only 4 adults and one child in my party and the waitress had the nerve to add gratuity when it was not a party of 6. That is against the law to do. I had contacted the restraunt on Monday and they did nothing about it. Such a bad experience and the worst service ever. Never will I go here again
Lunch at Catalina was great and, as usual, too much food. John took great care of us and during the latter end of the meal on the patio we were visited by the local roadrunner.
My wife and I had a great meal on the patio as the sun was setting on a Tuesday. We had the Javalina Fries for an appetizer that was so large it could have easily been the whole meal! Followed by entres of burnt ends and brisket sandwich. Both were exceptional. And our wait staff was very helpful and attentive. Contrary to some other reviews I've read our experience was of a resort trying very hard to please us in every way.
The food and service were quite good. The ribs weren't 'falling off the bone', but the dry rub they used had a nice amount of spice and a good flavor. Great appetizers, and a wider variety of menu items than expected.
Great food with some of the best Mac & Cheese and large portions, tasty sauces. Brisket was good as were the BBQ Ribs. Not quite as tasty as our own smoked ribs though.
They allowed us to sit where we wanted and we chose the hopping bar rather than the empty dining room. We realized after ordering that there was only one server (who took orders, made drinks, bussed tables) for the entire crowded bar. She was very kind and bubbly but drinks and food took a very long time. Our order for a second round of drinks was forgotten. The pulled pork sandwich was luke warm. The mac and cheese was hot and delicious.
Excellent barbeque. On the pricey side, but that's to be expected given its location on the Starr Pass Country Club. The salmon was just ok.
Bring back the original tortilla chicken soup! The new version is not very good. Everything else that we ordered was very good: burger, BBQ pork sandwich, etc. John is your best server ever - don't lose him!
Not very good service. Water glasses were empty. No bread served with meal. We were the only people in the whole restaurant yet our food was luke warm. Food was tasty but overpriced, IMO. There was no garnish or bread served with the meat, which was tacky. We were presented with the bill before we had finished eating and were not asked if we cared to order any desert or coffee. Won't be back!
Overall experience was fine but have to complain about portions. They are excessively large. While most people would welcome taking home leftovers we couldn't as we were guests at JW Marriott. We expressed our concern to two people who both said that's what BBQ is by providing larger portions. Unfortunately we felt like we threw a couple of twenty dollar bills in the garbage. We won't be back-sad!
Food was excellent and the service was great!! The patio was perfect even on a summer afternoon!
BBQ at its best but service had a lot to be desired.
The food is consistently good, and this visit was no exception - as usual, we ordered the pulled pork and brisket sandwiches and they were great. I recommended this place to a group of my golf buddies from Dell Urich and they all loved it, too. I told them that it's a bit pricey but that the quantity and quality made up for it, and they agreed.
Great BBQ, loved the brisket sandwich and short rib for my daughter
This is our daughter's favorite restaurant because of their cornbread, biscuits, and tortilla soup. My husband and I always get the burgers, pulled pork dishes, or brisket. Everything's consistently good here - even the sides; the only problem is trying to not consume all of the calories when we're trying to lose weight! BTW: when I order medium-rare burgers, they always are (most restaurants can't get it right for some reason).
Didn't need reservation on particular visit; found patio open seating in effect for lunch 1pm. Forgot to mention Open Table before we requested bill & I forget even when I received bill. It was my first attempt as a longtime Tucson visitor to use Open Table and I failed to register; I do have the charge receipt. Brisket sandwich was exceptional plus side of sweet potato fries.
Our reservation were for ourselves and two others who had never been there. But for some reason, it wasn't the same, except for the wonderful service. Though Gem Show visitors should have been around, the dining area was almost empty. The atmosphere was not vibrant, as I had remembered it from past visits. The food was okay, but nothing special. We'll go back, but for lunch, not dinner.
A bit out off the beaten path; Came for the ribs but was disappointed in that they were fatty and the sauce or seasonings they were cooked with was not good either, was expecting more for the prime cost. They did serve a side of sweet, vinegar, and hot sauces which might have worked better if the ribs were not already cooked with sauce. Tortilla soup was a good appetizer. Only a few other tables filled on a weekday evening, with both bar area and main dining room seating.
Our food was delicious., and we are here more than once during our stay. We enjoyed some great craf beers when we came for dinner. We tried the ribs, the salad with smoked chicken and a quesadilla. All very good.
Do plan to split each entire, they are ginormous! Each side easily serves 2-3 as well.
I liked that it was close to our hotel. The service was very friendly and good. The beer was flat, the food was ok and the portions were huge. I would have loved to be there in when it warmer and one can sit outside.
The brisket was very good when we were here last month. Tonight, everything was really good: the chicken tortilla soup was excellent, as usual (it's our daughter's favorite goto dish) and both burger were cooked as requested (one med rare, one med well). The onion jam was delicious, but too much of a good thing because it made the bun soggy, so be sure to ask them to go light on that. Killer pickles - the best anywhere. The biscuits and cornbread were cold this time, but the butter was warm so it was good (sometimes it's the other way around). We eat here at least once a month, and more often than not it's terrific.
This place has been a favorite of ours for the past 5 years since we moved to Tucson. Sadly, recent changes have knocked it down to Average, and no longer worth the price-point. The pulled pork is no longer luscious and savory, instead now being your average overly-sweet commercial food-service fare. Gone are the pretzel rolls and good chow-chow style pickles, and the BBQ Enchiladas were practically inedible (Barbecued blintz, anyone? Sweet tubes of goo bathed in a mealy sauce with super-sweet pulled pork piled on top? No? Yeah, me neither...) I don't know if the management changed, if staff was cut, or if cost-cutting measures were implemented. Frankly, I don't care because we won't be returning. There are a dozen or more reasonably priced and well appointed BBQ joints in Tucson to choose from. Don't waste your money. Your pancreas will thank you.
But just now I don't want to cook them myself. Catalina is ever so much better and I don't have to clean up afterward. The service was outstanding. The ribs were delicious, very, very spicy, though it would have been good to have some bread. The cole slaw was marginal. My husband had a brisket plate with home fries. Delicious. Thanks Catalina.
This is one of the few restaurants in the Tucson area that we jump at going when we can get a coupon. Otherwise we feel its a little high priced. Their food is excellent. My husband's ribs
were excellent. I would like to get a little refills on soda and coffee however. Their staff always
has a great attitude. We enjoy the little ride up the mountain to get to them.
You have a view of one of the hundreds of golf courses that use up the water from the Colorado river here. 100 years from now, there will be no golf course.
Located on Starr pass golf course this bar and grill has great view good and varied menu we had meatloaf and barbecued chicken and brisket. Pleasant casual environment, good food reasonably priced, will definitely go there again and take our out if town guests.
Baby back ribs were tasty but undercooked. Far from falling off the bone! The Mac and cheese was very strange, basically just pasta with cheese melted on top. Bowl it was served in had been put under broiler to melt cheese so served way too hot. French fries were real good. Very few diners when we were there.
The food was over-priced and just plain awful. Super dry brisket and a side of 'garden veggies' that consisted of lots of sauteed sliced onions, canned enoki mushrooms and a few cherry tomatoes--greasy and tasteless--obviously out of veggies! Our waiter was superb, but couldn't make up for the poor quality of food.
Catalina Barbecue is marketed as being "competition style" barbecue. However, the brisket was less than competition level. Unfortunately it was quite dry and not as flavorful as I had hoped. Chef needs to visit Texas for tips and training.
One of the best BBQ places in Tucson, especially since the new Mr. K's has closed. The side dishes are also really good, especially the muffins and cornbread, pickles, and sweet potato fries.
We sat outside on a lovely evening, overlooking the 9th hold on the Coyote golf course, and had a lovely dinner. My ribs were meaty and tasty - with a ample portion. My wife really enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich - as good as any she has had. James, our server, was wonderful, accommodating and professional. Very nice evening.
Restaurant is nice with a great view of the golf course. The barbecue is really delicious. Would highly recommend the wait staff write the orders down as it's easy to forget a thing or two or mix stuff up which happened, of course. Overall good quality though;-)
