Castagna - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
Love this restaurant! Was concerned that ownership had changed but happy to find out that the chef has taken over. We were there for Sunday brunch and my 92 yr old mother-in-law enjoyed a bowl of onion-fennel soup on that cold day. I opted for one of the best burgers in a long time and my husband enjoyed beef cheeks - WOW.
We will return often.
Castagna is a real neighborhood gem with its tasty French cuisine and great service! Cozy space, just a few tables, perfect for a date. We went there for Valentine's Day. The special menu was amazing. It started with an amuse bouche with ratatouille. It reminded me of my South of France! Then a delicious spinach salad with Foie Gras. Followed by Sea bass and a lobster risotto. And finally we shared a Financier and a berry tart. Everything was very good, full of flavor! And the service is friendly yet efficient and professional. We spent some time talking with the owner, Stephane, who's super nice. Will definitely go back.
Unfortunately I was not overly impressed. The staff seemed more interested in talking with the people at the bar. We had to wave the waiter down to order and to pay the bill. There are only seven tables of which only one other was filled at the time we arrived. One of the reasons we picked this restaurant was to have beignets for dessert. When we ordered he came back and said we do not have beignets. No apology. No nothing. We were there for two hours and we all only ordered an entree. I understand the French people's passion for long meals but we are not in Paris. Food was okay. Not exceptional. Not good enough to want to linger for two hours. The place seemed to have an attitude. Maybe they only like French people. It is too bad. It has potential but the arrogance was off putting.
Great little place on Chestnut St. menu is very creative with a number of interesting dishes. chef also provides beautiful presentation with every dish. We shared a goat cheese salad that was outstanding. My wife had a special of tiger prawns in a liqueur around a large polenta cake. Delicious dish although it was pricy. I had their lasagne which was very good. For desert we split their apple tart with caramel and crime fraiche. Good dessert overall. I would come here again.
We recommended this restaurant to acquaintances who wanted to treat us to dinner because we know the food is great. We have been dining at restaurants owned by these gentlemen for over ten years. I did not know that the people we were meeting had lived in France and were delighted to use a little of the language they'd learned there.
The service is outstanding. Very friendly and attentive.
Every meal we had dinner or breakfast was of high quality, cooked to perfection with the freshest ingredients and presented in a very pleasing way with a special touch to make us feel very special.
We will come back!
this might be the best restaurant in SF serving french/ french-italian cuisine. the dishes on the menu are all inventive, the beef stew, salmon fillet and the chickpea crepes were all fantastic and very well prepared. Chef Stefan is not only an amazing chef but he is also a very nice and approachable person. It is very clear he is passionate about his art and it shows not only in the high quality menu but also his friendly interactions with diners. Overall highly recommend this restaurant and I'll be back here soon, its now my go to spot in Marina/ Cow Hollow!
As always LOVE going to Castagna. The food is consistently good and excellent value for money, and Pasqual always make me feel so welcome and part of the family. Recently tried the honey bacon side order - OMG! The mussels were delicious as was the croque monsieur. Everything I've ever had there was yum and the desserts are authentic, rich and yet 'light' at the same time. Could eat just desserts and come away happy.
My wife and I had the profound pleasure to experience Castagna for dinner on our 27th anniversary....we were treated royally, drank fabulous wine and champagne, ate wonderful food and topped it off with wonderful dessert and white port . Could not have been better...can't wait to come back to SF and dine here again...
A fight broke out in the kitchen involving the cook, the host, and a waiter. Blows were thrown, blood was shed, cursing, and loud screams of "au secours!" (French for "help!") were made by one of the men who was being kicked while he was on the ground in the back. Our table had a clear view of this. One waiter came out to serve tables with blood on his white shirt, which he later changed out of into a purple shirt. The cook had was bleeding from his forehead and the third man had to have his hand bandaged. Customers left, and we declined dessert...I've never seen anything like this. The food was tasty, the socca a little different from what I've had in Nice, otherwise.
The service is excellent, friendly, and everyone makes you feel very special. The food is delicious and very nicely presented. The warm goat cheese salad was outstanding and the filet Steak au Poivre was so tender and cooked to perfection!
The lovely French atmosphere and everything else makes it always a very special night. La Castagna is a must every time I come to S.F.
